Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

The takeaway for me is not that the media sucks at their job, it is just that this preseason stuff is impossible and pointless.

No serious person would have put Aguilar at the top of this list. Heupel himself hooked up to a lie detector would not have put Aguilar on top of this list.

Yes, Sellers and Lagway are terrible and I think a lot of us knew they were terrible. But you're still left with the task of replacing them on the list.

I didn't think my comment was a contentious statement. Probably making too many assumptions about Joey Football after 4 games but Aguilar and Hooker have been by far Heupel's best 2 QBs. Heup went out and got Milton, who in hindsight was a better QB than he got credit for, but he was also not great, especially that first year. Heup also went out and got Nico, who looks like mega ass and did last year despite this board carrying water for him until he left. So Heupel's best 2 QBs have been a guy he inherited from Pruitt that he sat on the bench in favor of Milton, and now Aguilar. We would not have Aguilar if CJH's prized recruit did not leave us high and dry and from my understanding there were like 2-3 realistic options in the portal with the timing of Nico's departure. He certainly gets some credit for Aguilar but we'd be stuck with Nico had Nico not done us the ultimate favor and I'm fairly certain we still would not have scored in the 20s against Georgia had Nico not left and this board would still be making excuses for him.

Edit: And no, I'm not kidding when I say I didn't think this was contentious. It's perfectly okay to point out areas where Heupel could improve despite him being an excellent overall coach.

A few issues... Joe Milton got hurt in year 1, and only threw 61 passes for the entire season while working back from said injury. And if you want to point to Joe's first game in Year 1 at Bowling Green it actually helps strength the point that Heupel is a great talent developer.

11 of 22 for 139 yards and 1 TD with 14 carries for 44 yards and 2 TDs...

His last season and only as full time starter he threw for 2813 passing yards, 65% completion with 20 TDs to 5 INTs while adding 300 rushing yards and 7 TDs.

Hendon's best season 3135 passing yards, 70% completion with 27 TDs to just 2 INTs while adding 430 rushing yards and 7 TDs.

So really not much difference in total stats outside completion %

Hooker threw for 322 more yards with 7 more TDs and ran for 130 more yards with 2 less TDs.

Nico was overrated and a miss...but even Nico's season here was enough that everyone outside the Hill (and some on it) expected us to not even be a top 25 team with him gone.

Also...lets not act like hitting on 2 QBs in 5 years is a negative.

**** you know how many NFL teams would KILL for that sort of success rate? A lot more goes into it than just talent, system fit, location, teammates, coaches, maturity, etc. great example Daniel Jones 6 years with the Giants and was pretty much considered a bust and just an average QB at best. Now just 3 games with the Colts and so far a completely different narrative.

Geno Smith = bust for the Jets, gets with Pete and suddenly a different narrative.

With college its even more difficult IMO to land a truly great QB. And if the NFL struggles like they do with 3+ years of college and film of guys then image how much more difficult it is with thousands of kids all over the country. Very few HS teams play more than 1 or 2 other good teams in an entire season, if at all and some of these good QBs that are basically average college players put up video game numbers.

Hendon also missed several games during that season due to his torn ACL. He was dramatically better that year than Milton ever was.

I mean
Hooker played his best under CJH
Milton got drafted bc of CJH
Nico was still young and if you haven’t noticed most good QBs get better with age and I believe CJH would have fixed him
Joey is having his best year under the tutelage of CJH

Looks like he can develop guys to me

No to mention those previously mentioned guys played for teams with below talent at Oline and WR as you can see by their current situations outside of Tillman

I definitely think he can develop players. That seemed extremely evident in year 2. It's probably way too early in Heupel's tenure to say he's bad at evaluating QBs admittedly. Especially because you only take 1 per class and occassionally 2.

I
Just think their hard to evaluate
Nico’s whole QB class outside of reed has been lackluster it they are still young

All the guys seem
Like athletes now instead of traditional QBs and that’s why you have so many missed

I think so as well. Especially because you have to put all of your eggs in 1 basket at QB. Teams can't afford more than 1 highly ranked QB and can take a flyer on a lesser ranked QB at best. Hell, Texas probably would rather have Nico than Arch right now. Still early in that situation as well though.
