Being a good HC requires different skills than being a good DC. He just didn't transition into the job and he doesn't seem to embrace some parts of it. UT is a big job. He hasn't been up to it, and neither was Butch or Dooley.
Agreed. Butch wanting out tells me all I need to know, and imo Dooley just isn't a good coach, maybe another guy who is a career Coordinator, but just no HC material.
 
Of course, coaches are wanting their names floated out there. That's been true for the last two coaching searches.

Not sure why people keep thinking I'm some sort of advocate for Pruitt. I've said many times that I never thought Pruitt was a good hire or a good fit for UT. He wasn't ready for the job and he hasn't learned quickly. I'm not even sure how teachable he is. The only thing I like about the guy is his family. His wife and kids are wonderful, and all this hate and negativity is hard on them. Families have it rough during times like this.

Pruitt is who he's always been. The mistake was made when the hire was made. No matter what decision is made now, UT is going to pay and pay and pay for it going forward.
He’s not teachable and you know this. He’s one of the biggest hard heads I have ever come across in my life and I deal with some folks who think they know everything. All of the warning signs and red flags were there when we hired him...this is why it will be Fulmer who won’t be able to make it through this thing. His attempted micromanagement style of the football program as well is something that is and will be of great concern for folks as well. Not many coach’s are going to want to come in and deal with some of the stuff JP has had to deal with from that aspect.
 
I think a guy like Malzahn, if we could get him, would be about the perfect fit for what we need.
My worry with Gus would be that he might not recruit at a high level because he'd be viewed as a retread that already had a big time SEC job and was really inconsistent there.

He also, despite being a highly-thought of offensive coach, cannot recruit his own QB out of high school and develop him. He's only had success with transfer QBs in their first season with him. If he played the transfer portal every year for a QB though, I bet he could make it work.

Fire them both!! We love Tennessee football, not Phillip fulmer.
 
I'm a very capable engineer, but I'm also the president of my company. I honestly feel like I can't do both well at the same time, and the result is that I'm not very good at the president part. I think he simply will not or can not find the right coordinators and let them do their job, and the end result is that he ends up being a poor OC, DC, and CEO. As long as he is wired to be a DC, and trying to act like a CEO (and moonlighting as an OC), he will fail.
Now that's fair, makes sense and honestly I can relate to it personally. I was a supervisor who was expected to do that role as well as my old role on the floor. End result I couldn't do either super effectively and definitely did not feel like I was up to par.

I think he’s done. Whether it’s this year or next. He’s a lame duck coach. It does sound like the school is in a bind and you really can’t predict next years attendance, concessions or anything. It’s a tough spot.
I only direct my questioning to you because you are connected and make the most sense even though I don’t like what you’re saying. Lol.

The qualifier "this year or next" makes all the difference.

Your last line is concerning. Sounds like once again our athletic department is a mess.
 
For those that really dislike Pruitt I know what we can do. Make him work for every d**n cent of his contract no matter how bad it gets. We can get really stubborn and quit giving away free money. Take pride in our stubbornness instead of our football team. Don’t mess with Tennessee.

yep. i actually do think Freeze could do a good job here. he has the right personality for it, and Lord knows he's used to having some scrutiny put on him...so i don't think being under a microscope like he would here would necessarily be something he'd be scared of.

and he's competed in this conf, knows what he's getting in to, what the expectation is, understands how this "culture" in the SEC works, how the fans think, how recruits think....

siap a week or so ago, there a lot of reasons not to hire a guy like Freeze and his baggage. but there are a lot of good reasons you should hire a guy like him.

TN and him have both been thru the ringer the past 10 years.....most of it, for both parties, brought it on themselves.....

could be a helluva redemption story for a once proud program brought back to life by the ostracized Hugh Freeze......

or it'd flame out and blow up in our face.

but we are simply not scared of that at all. lol.....

if it were solely up to me, while i like a lot of things about Napier and some other candidates that have been brought up....i'd hire Hugh Freeze, for many of the same reasons we hired lane Kiffin 12 years ago. we need a shot of adrenaline in this program like no other....that'd do it. the trick is how to sustain it and weather the inevitable backlash we'd experience for making that hire.....

Close enough. The players ain’t sick of it yet. They out there hugging on the field in the middle of the game, giving reach arounds and waiting to take pictures with them after taking another L. Not sure why the fans put so much energy into when these dudes are soft as doctor cotton. I mean FFS VFLs are calling them out on that soft sh!t.

Time to bring Bahama John home. He deserves a second chance and I enjoyed his frantic jet setting trying to find us a coach.
 
As much as I dislike Pruitt I will say, I am shocked at how unprepared he was for the job. You would think being around Saban, Jimbo, Richt, he would've learned a thing or two.
Being knowledgeable about how to efficiently run a machine doesn't mean you know how to design and build your own machine.

Saban is an extremely effective CEO. Pruitt is someone who he hired to carry out tasks as directed by him. Saban planned, designed, and had a machine built and hired Pruitt and others to operate it. When this light comes on, pull this lever...when the machine makes this particular noise go over and press this button, that kind of thing.

Pruitt, like many other Saban assistants, is an order-taker. I know that sounds demeaning, but it really isn't, because it does take some knowledge and ability to be able to run a complicated machine. However, that doesn't mean Pruitt knows the first thing about going somewhere else and planning, designing, and building his own machine and bringing in capable people to run it. The fact that he worked for Saban probably gives him an inflated sense of self-confidence, hence his hard-headed attitude.
