Attrition happens with every class, at every program. But those are where the classes were ranked, I didn't rank them. Nor am I re-ranking them, what blows my mind is how often people try to use hindsight to reevaluate something. The roster Pruitt inherited were in those 3 classes, and that's where they ranked.

The roster Bronco inherited was 50th, 53rd, and 33rd for the previous 3 classes under London. Will you also now count those 3 classes and report back how many transferred out or medically retired, then use the same hindsight to evaluate the stock Bronco had to work with in his first 2 season at Virginia?

As a long suffering Dolphins fan, I remember well when Saban passed on Brees (w/ a suspect shoulder) and brought in Culpepper instead. Saban may still be at Miami Today if not for that decision.

That's really painful to think about. Chances are we wouldn't be in this position of desperate tanking after two decades of mediocrity, had that one decision gone differently.

As terrible as this season has been it wouldn’t surprise me if we by some miracle upset UGA. A QB away from 3-1 minimum. Defense is improving. 2 weeks to prepare. Played with them on road last yr when we all expected to be cremated. Deeply familiar with their schemes on both sides of the ball.

Fully expecting we get our butts kicked but who the heck knows.

That’s basically my only hope for this season to continue to progress and for it to eventually click. Unfortunately can only click so much when handcuffed at most important position on the field.

Yeah, you're not wrong. We've got fickle fans, I don't even listen to 99.1 anymore...so over the call ins.

I'm not fickle, but I'm also not blindly optimistic.

I like our head coach and I like this staff, more than anyone since Fulmer left. I like the 2 classes he's brought in, especially this 2019 class he got a full year to work on. I'm just not sure if Pruitt can do it or not. Don't know if Bronco could do it either honestly.

I don't know of any attainable Head Coaches that can come here and have us winning 10 a year again. The guys that can/could we've not got the checkbook for and they likely aren't leaving where they are at.
i'm not blindly optimistic either.

what i have is a difference of opinion with how this should be handled...today...and it's based on the situation and circumstances that exist today, not some emotional reaction because i'm butt hurt about w's/l's.

nobody is happy, nor should they be. but the "fire the coach" mantra is just lazy and short sighted, if you're really taking a full assessment of the entire picture.

i'll go on record right now and tell you that if CJP doesn't win, ultimately he will be fired. and ultimately, that might in fact be the right thing to do.

it's not the right thing to do today or at the end of this season.....he'll get fired if he continues down this path. that's a certainty.

thru many years of awful decision making, we've finally reached the point where stability matters the most......to what actually matters most....THE ROSTER.

we have to rebuild this roster. it's the only absolute there is right now. and firing this coach in/after year 2 is an awful decision that sets job #1 back even further.

and i say that knowing that there is no top 5 mega class on the horizon. but you keep getting core players like we got in 19....you can build on that....and develop everybody else. if nothing else, this staff has shown the ability to evaluate and recruit.

so even if we do have to fire Pruitt in a year or 2, you at least aren't dealing with a patchwork roster that's not put together for the same purpose.....all recruited for the same basic system......not devoid of s&c totally or experience....or talent....

as for this season...there's 8 games left. manage the qb situation as best you can, fix whatever you can on the defensive backfield and go see what you can do with those last 5 games.....who knows...maybe we salvage this thing, finish strong and sign a better than expected class.

or....we continue to suck.

which one we in for around here?

All Pruitt has to do is hand the keys to Maurer and tell Shrout to stay warm in the bullpen. That's it. The team will take care of the rest. The coaches can start going position by position and identify the guys that do things the right ways the most, the most athletic who can still recover and make plays, the team first guys, etc. There is time to turn this around. But it starts with a change at QB and a scheme that fits that QB. Chaney proved he could do that at UGA when they used a true freshman QB to nearly win a NC. He blended in some RPO into their standard O scheme. Running RPO is natural for Maurer. Add in the best of the rest of the O scheme and let him go do the job.

Just listened to the VQ podcast.

Best TN football news I have heard in quite a while is Rocker is in the final year of his contract!!!!!!!!!!!

....also Weinke which will be very disappointing to Bass

So coaching search for a DLine coach and a QB coach... I'm all for it.

Defensive Line short list
Karl Dunbar
Lance Thompson
Tosh Lupoi

QB Coach

I wouldn’t mind never seeing another backward swing pass again.
It would work if the ball could be delivered on time and in stride with the receiver. The one that was originally judged as a fumble against Florida looked like it was blocked well, but JG threw it to Ty's hip instead of leading him with it so he could have momentum going forward.

Somebody needs to send Pruitt that video..screw what JG looks like in practice.he has a freshman on his hands that’s leading the whole pack, the change is a must.

i heard that name floated earlier in the year. i can't imagine it's all that realistic given his current position with the Browns. unless they wind up sucking and a bunch of folks get fired.

TL;DR

I kid. I don't disagree with any of that, nor have I said we should fire Pruitt.

Let's just start with, would Pruitt have won 2 games at Virginia in year 1? Then open year 2 at 5-1, like Bronco did with 4 of those 5 wins being in conference wins, and 2 of those being on the road.

It's just a what-if argument, but Bronco would have without a doubt won more than 8 games at this point in his UT tenure. He has a proven track record at two different schools with far less doing it. Not "I think he can do it" but actual on the field results doing it.
Conjecture cannot be "without a doubt." It is likely, but nothing is given.

The entire justification of keeping Jeremy Pruitt around is built on the question “what if he figures it out?” There’s literally no other substance to it.
There is plenty more substance to it. It involves the repercussions from firing a coach after two years. You simply cannot take that out of the equation. You want to, but it's not logical.

So if Pruitt gets a pass this year, whats the min # of wins he needs to keep his job in 2020? I see 6 wins there max.
  • Sept. 5 — Charlotte
  • Sept. 12 — at Oklahoma
  • Sept. 19 — Furman
  • Sept. 26 — Florida
  • Oct. 3 — Missouri
  • Oct. 10 — at South Carolina
  • Oct. 24 — Alabama
  • Oct. 31 — at Arkansas
  • Nov. 7 – Kentucky
  • Nov. 14 — at Georgia
  • Nov. 21 — Troy
  • Nov. 28 — at Vanderbilt

This has 8 wins all over it IF we make the jump with young players and DL and QB. Tons of ifs but would revisit this once I see this team in November. If we can have an average to good D and at least a game manager at QB that protects the ball, then year three has to be a 6-8 wins. Ga bama Oklahoma and Florida are the tough ones BUT Florida’s attrition numbers will start catching up to them

Also said David Johnson is in his final year but I think he is actually done a pretty good job and is the least of the worries.
