Recruiting Football Talk VIII

The money is there, they just have to ask for it and be willing to spend it.

We just spent multiple millions signing a high school basketball player. You can’t tell me boosters will pony up for that, but not for football players at a football-first school.
Bull mentioned a few players in the portal that he didn't think would come to Tennessee because we don't have the money. I don't know his sources, I just know he breaks down film well.

Personally think Spyre is just spread out between the sports. I've been a member of the VolClub since the beginning. They had lofty goals then, they thought they could 5K members within a few months, when it took years. I remember a conference call when they had under 500 members still saying they wanted 5000 before the football season started. I wish more people would join the Vol Club.
Georgia and tOSU aren't very good at basketball right now. I reckon they put all their money into football.

I don’t think we had the money for Ament until Rick took the money people to the ballpark and asked for it.

Heup’s gotta go to these guys and sell his vision. And maybe he’s not cut out for that, but that’s why all these schools are hiring GMs.

Make me GM, we will be National Champions in no time.

Who says he's not?
Well, all this is predicated on the hypothesis that we don’t have enough money to buy transfers, in which case the lack of money is evidence, in and of itself.

If we do have the money, and we’re still not getting the transfers, then that raises its own set of questions.

I think there's plenty but they also like to take care of their own and spread it to other sports. You know that "everything school" everyone likes to boast about. I'm telling you right now Ohio st doesn't care about anything but football. UK the same with basketball. Stoops can whine all day about that pile of cash and he's still not getting any. I'm sure a GM will magically solve it though.

I'm starting to think that some of our big money guys like to talk a big game about spending money to get players, but get cheap when it comes time to pony up the money to get the player
i think the majority of power 4 teams have similar money except for a few outliers like Ohio State and Texas. it comes down to old fashioned recruiting.

A GM would help with this issue and many others.

There’s a reason all NFL franchises have a GM (or a GM functionary). And the current structure of college football probably makes a GM even more useful for day-to-day operations and salary management.

I don't disagree to those points but it's not going to magically increase the money pile imo. Football needs to be the focus if you want to take the next step🤷‍♂️

Ask the people in the basketball forum. The basketball pile was one amount, then we lost McNeely and they increased it. Then we got late traction with Ament and it increased again. Allegedly, we’re going from a $3 million roster to around a $10 million roster.

If football isn’t getting the money, it’s probably because they aren’t asking for it. And if Heup isn’t good at asking for it, that’s ok. We didn’t hire him to be a fundraiser. So maybe we should hire someone that excels in that area and let Heup do the things he excels at.

But there's nothing to worry about. So I'm told. Everyone is dealing with this.
I think it matters much more who you lost and who you gained. How many 2 deeps did we lose to the portal? And how many 2 deeps did we gain? Of we lost a hunch of 3rd string and gained starters, it's a net positive.

Yes I think the issue is we overspent on the HS class. As others have pointed out we are investing at top tier in every sport. There is a limit to it all. Also you have to pick your battles on when you are going all in. Do we really want to go all in on Aguilar? IMO our biggest focus will be holding on to Faizon and Sanders.

Bull talks a lot about how we aren't getting porthole players because of lack of money. I thought Spyre was the cream of the crop NIL collective. What's going on?

My take is Tennessee was early to the game, got ahead but now others have caught up, and Tennessee is settling back to where it has been in most other eras of college football - a high quality, top 10ish program that can win big if the cards align.

I think the big story in the coming years will be Bama and Georgia settling back to earth (I think Tennessee can match them in this era) while Texas, Ohio State and maybe a handful of other big money programs ascend to the top because they have more cash than everyone else.
