Nope. You can add the handling of Nico as another situation handled exactly correct by UT coaches and admin. We beat the NCAA and now we beat NIL. Every college needs to put up a statue of Josh Heupel. We are the pioneers forging the new frontier. There were signs at the very least, and they look to have been ignored. That's really the only fault I have with our coaches and administrators.
They already knew. Lanning just allowed them to go public and out Team Nico.![]()
Inside the monthslong saga that led to Nico Iamaleava's shocking Tennessee transfer
What really went down in Nico Iamaleava's split with Tennessee and move to UCLA? We go inside the drama months in the making.www.espn.com
Thankful to Oregon and whoever the UT player was who alerted Heupel to all this mess.
No, we didn't handle it as well as we could have. If you know last year he's sketchy you create a better situation toward a backup plan. The way this played out was like it was completely unexpected. We now know that isn't true.Nope. You can add the handling of Nico as another situation handled exactly correct by UT coaches and admin. We beat the NCAA and now we beat NIL. I would hold open tryouts for QB on campus before I would let Jake Merklinger of all people hold me over a barrel if I'm Tennessee.Surely Jake isn't going to cause a ripple now? Talk about burying yourself before even getting a shot...
If he pressures UT now for more $$$ and it goes south he'll be lucky to land on a G5 team and spend at least 2 or 3 seasons trying to do enough to get back to a P4 school.
Now if he's willing to take the existing bump....and then write in a "if I become the starting QB" sort of bonus then that wouldn't be terrible...
The government involvement is just the last dying gasp of the NCAA trying to hold on to releavancy.I recently heard Jope Pate say that Congress is ready to get involved.
I hate to see government sink their slimy meat hooks into anything, but it is apparent that the governing bodies of college athletics won't take the initiative to get a handle on this situation.
I just think this is completely absurd. The market will work itself out
I just think this is completely absurd.
The year is 2010 and no one will ever trust Bernie Madoff again with their money. Three cheers for the market working itself out? No, that's ridiculous.
Nico did what he did because he was operating in a fake, unenforceable contract.
The market working itself out would be Nico asking the market "How much money can I make?" and the market telling him no one will pay him more than what Tennessee is offering.
Like I've said before, Nico leveraged Tennessee's commitment against them. Like If I took a job, encrypted all the computers, and then asked for a 200% raise because the whole company would shut down without me. It's extortion. The idea that a self-respecting professional sport wouldn't have strict rules in place to prevent extortion is absurd on its face.
No, Nico's case has NOTHING to do with the market. He did not come to Tennessee and say "I can make X dollars over here, I want a raise". Which by the way would have been bad enough considering that is not how real contracts work. He came to Tennessee and said "Spring is over, you won't be able to replace me, and you are ****ed in 2025 if I leave right now". That is a negotiation that has nothing to do with his fair market value.I know you’re not comparing NIL to Bernie Madoff?? No one is committing fraud here. Just overpaying for services.
Yes, the market will work itself out. Nico’s case is exactly the market doing that. He wanted more and was told no. He now makes less money. That’s how it’s supposed to work. Your favorite team having less depth or being stuck with a backup QB is not comparable to fraud.
I’m not even saying there shouldn’t be some guardrails. But the government shouldn’t be involved. Until schools collectively come together to elect a commissioner, it is what it is.
I don't know what my brother mows his yard in. Maybe a banana hammock. He has traveled extensively in Europe so who knows what frew frew things he picked up but my neighborhood is a nice quite conservative enclave.More like a Banana Hammock. No judgement here. Have to be progressive in todays society
There is no way we could have anticipated the bonehead move made by Team Nico. We reacted to a really stupid situation and it turned out as well as can be expected. You can't go back and remake or judge past moves with present knowledge. Bottom line: we win again. No, we didn't handle it as well as we could have. If you know last year he's sketchy you create a better situation toward a backup plan. The way this played out was like it was completely unexpected. We now know that isn't true.
I like the way we handled this as well, just pointing out that we were aware there was an issue brewing and had to scramble to get the best replacement we could last minute.
