If they land Wiseman, Simons, Lomax and Harris I could coach that team to the NCAAT

I don’t think the fans will be satisfied with just an NCAAT.

That was really my point.

If 21 wins in the 2nd year of the coaches tenure when he took on a near complete rebuild wasn’t enough, then I think they are in for a rude awakening.

They aren’t going to become better than Houston, Wichita St, Cincinnati, SMU overnight.

Well SMU didn’t make the dance, so if Memphis does and is Top 4 in AAC I think they’ll be happy...you have to realize too that Penny is adored, if he won 21 games the place would be packed and bubbling with excitement. Their fans didn’t like Tubby, he had a rough first year and in Year 2 when talk of Penny started they really turned against him, that won’t happen with Penny.

It may be excusable since he was their high school coach, but Penny just mentioned Wiseman, Dandridge, Lomax, and several others by name on the Dan Patrick radio show, which is normally an NCAA violation. It's the risk you run when bringing in an unproven coach who isn't familiar with the NCAA rulebook.

It's a violation

What’s pretty funny is he got a horrendous deal, 3 years...I haven’t seen the salary yet but supposedly it was low baller and under $1m/year...they gave reassurances contract will be negotiated if this goes well but man...if I was him Memphis had to hire him, while city was calling for it, I think I would’ve held out for a better deal but then again he was also probably desperate for his break. His next step was a college assistant somewhere making $500k, he jumped straight from HS to college so maybe he didn’t care about contract.

LOL. You have no clue what you are talking about.

You think Penny took this job for the money, that it was his “break”?

He is literally worth millions and millions of dollars.

Penny would coach Memphis for free.

You need to reread his post and come back. You’re off base.

Slap on the wrist

You add some top talent to your team you can have a pretty quick turnaround. Look at Missouri. Of course I think the previous team mailed it in so it made them look worse than they actually were. But the excitement generated and fan buy in should be worth a couple wins. I mean playing in front of 600 people sucks. Penny is gonna pack that place.

I don't know how much of an improvement record wise they will make though. They won 21 games this year. They may win less games next year but their ceiling will be raised and their fans will have hope.

Missouri did it in the SEC, and Memphis plays in a conference that is not as difficult. If you just add 4 and 5 star talent, they immediately become contenders with Cincy and Wichita State. Just roll the ball out there, and they won't lose to East Carolina and USF. That's the difference in their league.

Yea, just a mistake. He has been pretty open with things, even talking about another school who pursued him (Ole Miss).

In his second year, he will most likely have more talent than all of them.

Ole Miss had interest in him. But, they knew he would bolt for Memphis if the job came open at anytime. Penny openly thanked Ole Miss for the interest, but he said it would be difficult to coach anywhere other than Memphis.

I am surprised at the 3 year deal, but money was never going to be an issue.

He said that he should have held out for a better deal.

Was never about money

That’s not what I said...I said he could have if he wanted to because Memphis had no leverage, but that at the end of the day he obviously wasn’t too concerned and was eager to make the jump. I also mentioned the length of his contract, 3 years, more so than the money this is what I would’ve fought for if I was Penny...how many new hires coaches sign a 3 year contract? I’ll wait...

I’ve yet to see a firm number, I saw $500k rumored and if that’s true that’s pretty damn low...but yes I also mentioned the 3 years as well, that’s a very short deal for someone who had all the leverage.

The 3 years are odd. But it was never about the contract

I’m aware it wasn’t, and I said as much in the OP that you responded to but were too busy looking to be snarky to read...he saw the opportunity to make the rare jump from HS head coach to P5 head coach without any stops in between, he is betting on himself that he gets it done and knows that it’s as golden of an opportunity as anyone will ever get, so yea he was likely to take the job regardless of the offer.

However there’s a business side to things, see Scott Frost’s deal at Nebraska...and there’s plenty more examples. Penny could’ve gone to Ole Miss and probably gotten 4-5 years and more money, so while the money aspect isn’t surprising especially considering the boat loads of money Memphis is having to pay to 2 former head coaches (horrible deals from AD), the fact his agent didn’t push for a little more security by getting him 4+ years is surprising...to most people.
