I’m aware it wasn’t, and I said as much in the OP that you responded to but were too busy looking to be snarky to read...he saw the opportunity to make the rare jump from HS head coach to P5 head coach without any stops in between, he is betting on himself that he gets it done and knows that it’s as golden of an opportunity as anyone will ever get, so yea he was likely to take the job regardless of the offer.

However there’s a business side to things, see Scott Frost’s deal at Nebraska...and there’s plenty more examples. Penny could’ve gone to Ole Miss and probably gotten 4-5 years and more money, so while the money aspect isn’t surprising especially considering the boat loads of money Memphis is having to pay to 2 former head coaches (horrible deals from AD), the fact his agent didn’t push for a little more security by getting him 4+ years is surprising...to most people.

Penny Hardaway is worth $50M dollars.

But yea, Ole Miss for more money. Sure thing.

FYI, they are only paying one former coach. While I do agree that 3 years is a little surprising, it shows you that he just wants the job to improve the program.

He was asked directly yesterday if it was a dream to coach after his playing days. He said no. He said he was asked by a good friend to help coach middle school a while back. That friend was dying of cancer and has since passed away. He did it for his friend and realized he enjoyed it. After that, he moved up.

High school is much different than college, with a 3 year deal he better hope for results pretty quick...I applaud him for not being scared off, not too many people wanna risk losing their place in the fans hearts by sucking as a coach.

The thing is that he will get local players regardless of how long his deal is.

If he helps in a big jump in season ticket sales, then I would think they would extend him after year one. He has said all of the right things. It is his responsibility to put a good product on the court and get people to attend.

FWIW I can’t read it but 247 has an article up saying Harris will visit Tennessee soon

Nice development if it happens. That could change the order for him.

Jerry Meyer really sounded negative about our chances on Basilio. Think his words were "I just don't see it happening for Tennessee with Tyler Harris."

I have zero doubt about the local kids, but Pastner did pretty well in that area and struggled to get the guys to mesh together...already hearing Lomax and Harris don’t wanna play on the same squad.

No doubt he’s gonna increase ticket sales and excitement, but hype only gets you so far, look at Chris Mullins with SJU, those people are ready to burn anything that has ever had his name on it.

Haven’t you also been the very first person to dismiss 247 and Jerry Meyer?

Like I said the other day, my stance on Harris has been we are quietly in it...sure we may trail Baylor but guess what, he’s now burnt that OV and hasn’t committed. If Tennessee turns up the heat and brings him in for an OV, sells him on getting to play Memphis every year, I definitely think Tennessee can get themselves into position for his commitment.

Well, there are 4 of them who have played on the same high school team, so they are already familiar with each other, and a 5th is a cousin to one of the 4. I don't think Lomax and Harris would ever play together because they are both undersized PG's. Pastner had trouble dealing with some of them, but that is one area in which Penny has more experience. He has done it at the local level.

They needed hype since attendance dropped to its worst since 1970. Then, he will be playing with 4 and 5 stars in the AAC. They will at least match what Tubby did with better players, so there is nothing to lose.

I’m not a fan of 247 and especially not their phony composite. Jerry always seems like he has nothing to say about Tennessee recruiting. But I mean he’s the lead scout for 247 so it’s not like Tony Balogna is the one saying it.

Oh I was one of the ones saying you’ve gotta make the move, I fully get why they did it and agree with them doing it...I just don’t know that it’s near the slam dunk many of their fans are acting like it is.

I lik his scouts, but I’ve disregarded a lot of his takes on Tennessee until pretty recently...he dogged Barnes’ recruiting on Basilio time and time again and now wants to act like he knew what they were doing all along etc.

Like I’ve said, I would agree Tennessee wasn’t/isn’t the team to beat, but I just don’t agree with what apparently is his take and that Tennessee can’t become a very real player for Harris...imo if he was a done deal to Baylor he would’ve already committed, not be eyeing more visits.

He said Baylor lead followed by Miss State.

Jerry brings almost nothing when he comes on Basilio. Not sure why Tony has him on every few months.

I know what he said, but same applies to both, and he implied Baylor was the clear favorite...I’m not suggesting that he’s a silent to Tennessee but you can look back through the last 2 years and Tennessee only brings in guys on OV’s they feel that they have a very good chance to land.

I think that may have been based on Tennessee's reluctance to set up an OV, and it looking like they were content to hold out for Simons.

This may mean more regarding bad news on Simons. Harris visiting now tells me Tennessee is likely moving on from Simons and putting the move on Harris, among others. Hopefully, they can make up the ground they lost to Baylor and MSU by waiting. Tennessee should be more appealling on the surface.
