Recruiting Discussion

Rob Lewis suggested that Barnes is/was a little over the one and done guys, or possibly worse the guys who thought they were one and dones. Reading between the lines, it sounds like maybe Barnes/Ogden/Lanier attribute some of their shortcoming the last few years at Texas to having guys who were talented but not willing to put in the work or listens being coached. I don't think that means we won't see him target some highly recruited guys, but it sounds like he's gonna make "coachability" a pretty high priority when evaluating a prospect. Could be why in 2017 you're not seeing many top 20 guys/5 stars, you're seeing a lot of the 40-100 ranked guys who typically have the ability to play in the NBA, but do need some time and development.

Recall him saying somewhere that one and dones that shouldn't have been really hurt the foundation of his final teams at TX. He changed his recruiting philosophy late and really thought the team he was going to have this year at TX was going to be really good due to having some guys that had been in program a few years. I don't blame him. Right now those one and done guys are looking at Kansas, Duke, KY, UNC anyway.

@GrantRamey: Was also told that Barnes said now that they signed what they consider a foundation class, they begin chasing the bigger name recruits.

By signing this big a class wouldn't you expect the staff to run off a couple or so to free up scholarships for bigger named players in 17?

I would say the 2017 class will be 2-3 players deep, Hubbs is the only senior so right now that number is 1, but by the end of after this season and end of NEXT season I could definitely see 1-2 guys leaving, not even necessarily run off, may very well leave on their own.

He didn't have the talent at neither Clemson or Providence. There were times where Barnes' had incredibly talented teams at Texas, but they couldn't click. I believe Barnes will do fine with less talent.

Rick Barnes signed 12 top 100 kids in six seasons at Providence. His 1990 team had 8 top 100 kids out of 13 on scholarship. At Clemson, he signed 7 top 100 kids in 4 seasons. His 1997-98 team had all 7 kids on the roster.
He had talent at both places. I hope, after this start, Barnes starts stockpiling that same kind of talent here.

Let's get some big name guys. Hoping for a solid 2-3 players in the 2017 class. Need some big guys especially.

I think Isaiah (stokes) is 2017, or 2018. If we get on him next year, or even have Lanier get on him now, we should have as good a chance as anybody.

Isn't Stokes more likely to play football only? I know we offered in both. Has he decided to play basketball?

He quit football this year to focus on basketball, he said it was too difficult for him to try and drop and gain the weight necessary to be elite at both. He was pushing 280+ for football, but for basketball wants to be 240-250. He has said he hasn't been able to focus solely on basketball, so he wants to get his weight down and give basketball his all his junior season and see how it goes. If he doesn't evolve or develop enough then he will bulk back up after basketball season and play just football his senior year.

You can tell he is still in football shape in this video 4 months ago. He's a hoss though, I hope he comes here.

Ok, thanks. The last I heard he was going to concentrate on football. I would prefer he plays basketball. Basketball needs him more than the football team needs him.

Really depends on how he develops, he loves basketball, but there's a lot of football people who feel he's about as close to a lock as a NFL tackler as they've ever seen.

Think our odds are good with Isaiah Stokes?

He has a way better chance of being a high NFL draft pick than an NBA player. I just think the bball team needs him more. I guess it will come down to what he has a passion for.

Has some skills with the ball in his hands. Might be effective in a high post set up. Likes to spend a lot of time on the perimeter, like a lot of young bigs. Really will have to work to get in shape, but there's clearly potential.
