We're halfway there Vol Nation.

For me, the jury is still out on Dooley, even through all the turmoil. I have been as frustrated as anyone with the team's performance this year and even compared Dooley to former Alabama coach Mike Shula, which in hindsight was wrong of me. I admit, Dooley does deserve some time.

Realistically I think he should have 4 years. By his fourth year Bray's class will be seniors and their progress can be correctly evaluated. After that if he is still mediocre then its time for him to go. Next year he better win some big games. I'm not expecting a 12 win or even 10 win season but he better win some big games in October.

A wise man once said "You have to survive the hard times to really enjoy the good times"

For now, I think we need to stand behind our team, give them encouragement and let them know we have confidence in them. One of these days they will get it right! Have some faith.

Go Big Orange!

He gets 3, not more.

the losses arent dooleys fault by any means

I agree, but some of the coaching decisions could have at least improved some of the outcomes, whether we actually won or not. Maybe lost by less, but I'm not into moral victories. But in reality, CDD has been dealt a hand unlike any other I've ever heard of.

Except the SMU team that got the death penalty. That pretty much takes the cake on bad hands dealt... lol

The best players on the team the last two years have been freshman (Bray/Hunter/Rogers/Oline from last year; Maggit/Johnson this year on D), so I say give him time to let his players make their mark and then decide. I agree that if we are still mediocre after 4 years, you have to go another direction. In the mean time, all we can do is watch the process/progress.

four years? hell no, if he shows he can't win at Tennessee hire someone else. With a stable core of players we should be in a better positions to hire a better coach than when we started out.

I agree with you on 4 years, he needs to go by then if we are not doing much better, then we get to start this dreadful madness all over again. Go vols!

8-9 wins next season..close losses against big teams..and we should be in hunt for big title the year after that...I say "hunt" coz no one can guarantee championship..alabama can't, lsu can't, OU can't or stanford can't ..but get us to the point where we contend for championships ..we are relevant and teams fear us when they see us in schedule..
Now with full strength ..(bray, hunter etc;) we were already on watch list by many teams..so i think we will get better...get stronger and Dooley will take us where we want to be..:)

Next year he better show vast improvement and 8 wins minimum. I say he has one year after that to show that we are back if not, Hart will make a move.

They very likely would have won eight games this year if not for major injuries and were ahead of expectations of everyone outside of the program. The fans who are calling for Dooley's head are unrealistic idiots. It's difficult to compete in the SEC when you lose your starting QB and WR1.

I'm confident in saying he's not guaranteed a 4th year.

I'm not saying I have sources, but I don't see him getting 4th year if UT never hits 8 wins.

Dooley should have enough talent to prove if he can coach next year. He's not gonna line up man for man against LSU and Bama (and we don't play LSU) but will be in the ballpark with everyone else. He will have to earn a 4th year IMO.

Agreed. That's exactly how I feel on the matter. He'll definitely be here next year, but anything more will be earned.

 idk

he has to take some (not all) of the blame.

To the OP though, I'm cool with giving him at least 4 years. That squad should have everything it needs to win and then we will be able to tell if DD is the man or not.

With that said next year better have some massive improvments and if it doesn't I can already guess what some of the threads will say...

"It's not the coaches fault. Bray and company are basically just sophomores b/c they missed last season"
"Lets kill DD! He is the worst coach of all time!"
"I want black uniforms"
"I'm 85 years old and hate anything new and fun that the players might enjoy"
"I hate the 'whooo' in rocky top"

he'll get minimum 5 years and I'd give him 6.....place is a mess....

Also Hart would make that call, and I'll wager Dooley is part of the reason Hart was hired...and Hart while it's true he went Alabama, is clearly not the idiot Hamilton was or many who post here.

We need stability to recruit......other wise we get two decades of the idiocy that was Alabama trying to replace the Bear.

Besides all of that, Tn doesn't have the budget to recruit anyone bigger as head coach...and not many bigger want to join a program now known to have played Caeser gets stabbed in the quad mid season with the coach who won them a NC title, and gave 25 plus years.....everyone knows that what a program does to it's own they'll do worse to an outsider. We lost some serious respect by alot of coaches by the way that was handled.

Solid post, IMO JMO.

For the record I don't think it will take 6 to end these discussions....just long enough to achieve enough depth so he can cut scholarships and send the wrong players packing when needed. I predict turn around mid next year and definately the year after.....we 'll have four solid recruiting classes...and the dead wood will either have left or get carved out.

I understand that stability is important, and it was especially important when Kiffin left and our roster was missing a whole bunch of players.

However, at some point that needs to stop being used as a way to justify the fear of making a change. Dooley needs to show something next year.
