wow that guy said Manning is on the same level as Clausen, even tho Manning has a Super Bowl ring, and last i heard Clausen was coaching high school.

love how me and you always disagree, but the op was aking about college qbs, not what they have done in their professional lives. And Tee beat both Florida and bama. Now, after saying all that, I vote manning:)

When did the NFL become relevant when ranking COLLEGE. I REPEAT. COLLEGE.
QBs?

i think its funny everyone is tlking bout how Tee beat Florida, kind of like Peyton did nothing while he was there. Didn't he end the streak to Bama?

And Tee beat Florida, Bama and won a title. Imagine that.

Others responded to other remarks made about this, so I didn't include those.

Your argument is akin to claiming Trent Dilfer was better than Dan Marino because Dan didn't win the big one. The only reason Tee "beat" those teams is because the Vols had a great team and had to actually find ways to win without one of the greatest quarterbacks to play at any level. Peyton also had no problems lighting up Alabama.

No, it's not. Because Tee Martin wasn't completely useless like Dilfer. Martin was actually a very good dual threat QB.

The team Martin lead to the title was less experienced than Manning's, so don't give me that. And the coaching staff was exactly the same for each one, if I do recall correctly.

Tee Martin's stats may not look as pretty as Manning's, but the guy knew how to win on the big stage. If he wasn't able to with his arm(like against florida), he would with his legs.

On Manning never winning the NC:
I look at it like New Orleans recently (2006-2008): you would see Brees throw for 300 or 400 yards a game, and they still get beat. Once they were able to balance their offense, and increase their defensive output, they went all the way (ironically beating Peyton Manning to win).

I believe you missed the point of his analogy, which I happen to agree with. To put a different spin on the same idea why isn't every player at every position from the '98 team the de facto greatest ever? I mean, they were playing that position on a team that beat FL and won an undefeated national title...right?

Try this mental exercise; take the best player you can think of, regardless of postion, and put them on the worst team you can think of. Now...that team going to go undefeated? How about reach a bowl? Break .500? Can you guarantee they even win a game? Obviously your selection will clearly be a great player...it's just his team sucks and that's that. Barry Sanders never sniffed a SB and Earl Campbell only caught a whiff. Those two are on almost every "best ever" list. In fact we both know you could stroll through any HOF in any team sport and find scads of people considered among the best players of all time, even if the teams they played on were mediocre...or worse. Upshot, trying to assign talent (or lack thereof actually) to an individual based on team results just doesn't hold up well under scrutiny.

Sometimes this gets sideways because people feel some strange urge to "defend" Tee. He doesn't need defending. He was a darn good college football player who is remembered fondly by pretty much any Vol fan that remembers watching him play here. BUT, it's simply silly to campare him to Manning as an individual player. Manning is a stone cold lock for both the college and pro football Halls of Fame. Tee's biggest claim to fame over Manning is "beating" FL when his total yardage, running and passing, was something like 90yds while completing 35% of his passes.

And speaking of FL, what would Peyton's record have been if the Gators had never managed more than 17 points?

Peyton Manning played the QB position better than tee martin EVERY yr. Maybe you should look at the offensive output by peyton manning against fla and compare it to tee. Then look at what the defense gave up. DUHHH.
