Might have been a defect or it could have been a heat issue. Laptops run pretty hot. Do you have it flat on a desk or table when you're using it? If so, elevate so air can circulate under and around it. A plastic bottle cap under each corner will do some good. The motherboard went out on my new desktop computer 6 months ago and they had to replace it. When I got it back, I noticed it was running hot but didn't pay any attention to it until it started shutting down a few times a day. Added a cyclone blower in an expansion slot, tweaked a few things to control the fans and now runs a comfortable 36-38 degrees. Was pushing 50-56 degrees before. I always elevate my laptop. It's 7 years old and going strong.
