'25 QB transfer prospects (Joey Aguilar)

Because he views himself as QB1 now and team is rallying around him right now.

Imagine the team supporting you and you finally get your moment and realize you are likely not going to get a shot?

Food for thought. Since people just assume he will stay. Gmac is locked in no matter what.
He was already supposed to be QB2. If he goes then he isn't very smart. No one else is giving him anything close to 200k

It's worth the risk because Merk isn't a sure fire thing to take the job and run with it. If we thought he could be the QB and us not have much drop off, I'm sure we wouldn't be putting much stock in to finding someone that could play next year.
That is true too. All risk. Truth is Nico screwed us big. Should have cut him after the playoff game if all of this BS was going on and we had an idea. Then we could have shopped for a while and been prepared.

I don't understand the criticism of Aguilar, but I also don't understand why his stats dropped off in 2024. In 2023 he had 3700 yards and 33 TDs to 10 Ints. That's an impressive stat line to me. 2024, not so much.
App State was horrible last year. It was one of the worst teams they've fielded in the last 25 years.

Yep. But it is what it is now. Have to try to put a winning team on the field now, and have to take whatever you can get and try to make some chicken salad.

Sure someone would. Georgia Southern paid way more than that for their starting QB and he was not good. He would land somewhere. Obviously not likely a big school.

We shall see what happens!

I just don’t think it’s worth the risk.

Perfect world if Aguilar comes is they have a true competition and let the best QB win and all three stay. I think everyone is just being too confident that Merk stays if we bring someone in.
Perhaps you and I are just looking at this from a different perspective. For me, if Aguilar is the guy we bring in, it's the backup option of bringing in a guy to compete for the starting role with Merk and Mac, not the guy you just hand the keys over to. If that is accurate, and he isn't better than what we already have, then Merk would be the starter and there would be no reason for him to consider leaving.

The offense would have looked a lot better if we had a QB that wasn't overthrowing wide open WRs 30+ yards down the field. We left a lot of points on the board the last 2 seasons because of that.

The play calling still could have been better many times. But you have to work with what the person behind center gives you.
It’s a lot.
From a philosophy standpoint.
- defenses played at the depth and lane assignment (converge of lane not kick off) to where they could defend either options for WRs routes.
- played gap control and beat our line mine to the bunch on counters
- Why are sending 4.7 - 40 Bru McCoy on go routes??
- can we run something thing different than a counter on 3rd and medium?

I think Nico would have been in consideration for All-SEC last year if Golesh were still here last season. I know everyone here hates him, but of the world doesn’t end this summer, then watch what little Sunseri does with him on offense at UCLA.

I know everyone is trying to rally the troops and get behind what we have, but we’re operating at 75% with Halzle. 2 years now we’ve seen what he can do with an NFL QB and former 5 star in his 2nd year.

Nico’s dad screwed him with the money and bad planning but his concerns about our offense is warranted and I’m not sure Litrell will fix it. He can coach but how much will he give him responsibility wise when Joey H is making 1 million?

I’m not excited unless UT brings in all-conference performer at QB. Golesh is STILL a huge loss and we have not come close to replacing him

I can see that perspective. But what if Merk takes it as losing the job? All assumptions and risks. I just would rather not risk Merk unless it’s a guaranteed starter is all I’m getting at. I hope they view him as depth if he is brought in and may the best of the three win.

“Finally” get your moment. Acting like he’s been on campus for 4 years

Ya’ll remember all those other QBs you swore were better than JG?

Maurer
Shrout
Harrison Bailey (even I thought after we signed this guy that he’d be good)

Were there more? There had to be more.

Lol! This isnt 2010. These kids come to play immediately or leave. They want money and playing time. No QB is sitting three years to play now.

Then let him leave?

Dude didn’t even expect to be the starter this year. He was expecting to “finally” get his shot next season, his 3rd year on campus….

I guess no one has considered that one QB may leave if we bring someone in?

Nico screwed us. But if you bring someone in it has to be someone you want to start. Which is exactly what the two QBs will view it as.

What if it costs us Merk? You’re down to two QBs anyways and lost potentially a better QB.
Merk had zero expectations of starting this year. Aguilar has one year. If he comes they can have a legitimate competition. Having 2 scholarship QBs is terrible judgement. If Merk wins the job then Aguilar can get paid to be the backup.

Things change. And yes it’s not ideal. Let’s hope if we bring one that none leave.
