He was QB1 for one “practice” if you want to call it that. He knows the staff is going after another QB. Coach said it after the Spring game and he knows all the reports now. Plus I’m sure they’ve talked to him

Eh. I’d wager that Josh has spoke to him about it seeing how it would be all over social media anyhow.

So then why didn't either of them jump in the portal after the O&W game when Heupel clearly stated we would be bringing in another QB?

very well could. 1 of them could also leave right now. It's all speculation. But you at least have to try to get a 3rd guy. Had Nico not left, we may be trying to get a third guy for depth right now because Merk or Gmac may have decided to leave. You just don't ever know.

Do you think the staff is just leaving him in the dark over this whole thing? I’m sure Merk is well aware we’re planning to bring somebody in, and if he’s not confident that he can beat them in a QB battle, that’s his problem, not the staffs.

That’s honestly a great question because he had the same receivers in 23 and 24. Top 4 receivers were the same guys. Run game fell off a cliff from 23 to 24 though. They had the same offensive coordinator so unless they had a major turnover on the offensive line it’s fairly inexplicable. Only other explanation is the new RBs couldn’t balance their pass game or the QB just didn’t play well.

It’s easy to say this your team and we’re bringing in depth and then see a true starter come in that you know is taking the job and plans change. I would bet he is in wait and see mode. This is new era college football and these kids want to play or get paid.

You know Erik Ainge had a solid freshman season only to be followed up by an absolute disaster his Sophomore season. Enter a coaching change at OC and Ainge rebounds and has very solid junior and senior season under Cut. Maybe all Aguilar needs is to be coached by JH. I'm usually not so optimistic on these types of things. But heck, considering where we are, we don't have a lot options. Take the chance.

he was the same one that said talks fell apart ~3pm on Friday

insider on another site said taht we were still in talks that ultimately fizzled this morning (before Aguilar entered portal)

True. I just think you go get a bonafide QB1 and then just let what happens happen. If they all stay, perfect. If one leaves, well you have a five star coming in. If we get Aguilar and he sucks, Merk leaves, then you have Gmac who is one big hit away from injury. Then we are totally screwed. I hope for the best but this is not the same college football anymore and these kids will walk fast. I’ll be praying to not see Merk hit the portal all the way up to the season starting if Aguilar is the guy.

We were never getting a bonfire QB1. That's the problem. I just dont see either of the 2 leaving if it's Aguilar. It may happen down the road, but not in this portal cycle anyway.

We shall see what happens!

I just don’t think it’s worth the risk.

Perfect world if Aguilar comes is they have a true competition and let the best QB win and all three stay. I think everyone is just being too confident that Merk stays if we bring someone in.

It's worth the risk because Merk isn't a sure fire thing to take the job and run with it. If we thought he could be the QB and us not have much drop off, I'm sure we wouldn't be putting much stock in to finding someone that could play next year.
