'25 QB transfer prospects (Joey Aguilar)

I get the point, but mine is that the focus on the ghosting doesn't really matter if the end result is the same-- transferring out of the program that developed you.
It does matter though. We knew Nico shopping, we were continuing to negotiate until he ghosted. Say I'm done and move on....or.... Continue to negotiate. The difference is in how you go about it.

I don't have any knowledge whatsoever. But I think Avery is a long shot.

If you are willing to reach, you could point to the fact that the OC that recruited him just bolted to the NFL in January. But that reason seems flimsy.

I don't think KSU, Baylor, or the rest of the country will see it that way. We will, rightfully, be called hypocrites for poaching another high profile player by the entire national media should it happen. No amount of mental gymnastics on our side will change that.

South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez, a guy pursued by Georgia and LSU in the winter, hit the transfer portal on Monday. He won’t be the only guy. Tennessee will have some options.”

I think we still land a starter from the portal but some yall are rich. Complaining about recruiting if decide to roll with Merk….wouldnt mean they recruited the position well if they’re confident in a redshirt freshman Merk? I honestly think we should just support the move whatever it is, why should we doubt coach on who he wants at QB? If we don’t get a starter from the portal, it isn’t because we can’t land one. Come on now. lol

Winning cures all ailments. Poach the right guy and we will be pouring moonshine this fall while others will be sipping the red wine.

As heartless as that sounds, that is the reality of unlimited free agency. Come fall all that matters is W/L. If you care enough about being called hypocrites by other fans, then you should probably care when other teams snipe talent. Its happening all the time, everywhere, every week in CFB. Even though there are only a few portal windows, the conversations are constant.

Nico's camp got ratted on by Lanning. Do you think Lanning made a call to every coach every time a backchannel conversation happened on another player?

Again, we were put into this by Nico's team. Now we have to adapt to survive.

Who cares? The staff is paid to win and they are also competitive. I doubt they want to give up on the season or diminish chances of winning to save face.

Our issue isn't that Nico shopped for a better opportunity. It's that he sat out, ghosted everyone. That's the issue and that got him dismissed. If he'd have walked we wouldn't have liked it and we would have villainized Nico.

But Nico never had a $4 million deal and overplayed his hand at the last minute instead of negotiating in good faith.

This is business...... Now if Nico had come to us and said coach I have a deal with Oregon and I think I can win a ring there. I have to go. That's business.

If Avery suddenly ghosted his team and started shopping himself then it would be similar. Nico quit on his team. If Avery does the same I wouldn't want him here either.

GoVols247 said this is just an unfounded rumor.

as for everything else, I'm just tired of the mercenary ******** honestly. I follow this less and less, and my posting rates probably reflect that. I was happy we handled this the way we did, but to just do the same thing in reverse immediately after ruins it.

and then those teams will go do the same thing to someone else.....the system is the system.

it sucks but they are paid to win

Rick Neuheisel said the first call he would make is Avery Johnson. He said that you at least have to do it bc you are paid to win games

This is a fair point and it's had the same effect on me. Until this Nico thing, I wasn't even keeping up with recruiting or portal or any of that.

And you are right, we'll get dragged through the mud when/if we get another teams starting QB. Unfortunately, if your goal is the playoffs, leaving your fate to a QB with 9 total pass attempts and a true freshman isn't something you can do.

This situation sucks. Nico would be better off here. We'd be better off if him and his team hadn't pulled this stunt. This is so far removed from the CFB we all grew up and fell in love with. We went from NCAA athletes not "being able to eat" to "give me 4 million or I walk" in a blink.

What a mess.

A guy I think would definitely come to UT is Alonza Barnett from James Madison. He fits the style of being able to throw and run. Maybe a little short at 6 feet but can extend plays.

It is what it is. Trying to win. Feels dirty to me as well, but that's the game.

Best to look for someone who isn’t starting. Thats generally who is in the portal and who CJH has historically targeted.

Sam Leavitt is better than Avery IMO
It’s just gonna be harder to pull him away. Just won the big 12 championship and should’ve beat Texas in the cfp. Their oc was the the only offensive coach up for coordinator of the year. They’re also returning a lot of players besides the rb cam skataboo. If I was Sam I’d stay put.
