People start buying into the hype a month or a few weeks before the thing comes out, but by that time, all the product that is going to be available at launch is long since spoken for. The iPhone 5 this past year is the most recent example. The resale value will all depend on the amount of consoles that are available in that month leading up to Christmas. If they are plenty to go around, the resale won't be that great. If they're hard to come by, the markup for a secondhand one will be pretty substantial, because the demand will certainly be there.

If anything, the return wouldn't be any less, it might just be harder to ensure you can get one during the Holiday season, even if you plan months ahead of time.

Good point - and I agree that demand will likely out weigh the supply early on - but if a large number of people try to resale all at the same time upon release, it's going to push prices down.

I think it's definitely still worth pursing; I might do it myself.

Just watch out for scammers!! These systems will be highly targeted for scams.

Easy enough to avoid. Arrange a public meeting place, tell them to bring cash, bring one of those pens to check and make sure the cash is real, and probably bring a friend as well as some sort of firearm on your person to ensure you don't end up getting robbed. Follow those guidelines, and I don't really see how you could end up getting scammed as long as you bought the system yourself from an actual retail store.

When you're talking about getting upwards of $1000 for a video game system, getting robbed would be much more of a concern for me than getting scammed. Especially after hearing stories in 2005 of people getting jumped in parking lots as they left the stores with their legitimately purchased systems.

I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to show up in possession of a highly valuable video game system just hoping that the complete stranger that had contacted me via Craigslist was on the up and up.

I really don't think it's worth getting a new system at launch.


Most of the killer aps usually aren't that great. Plus you are in the glory period of the old system in its waning days, MGS3, Shadow of the Colossus, etc...

Also it will allow you time to take out a second mortgage so you can afford the $2500 the PS4 will cost you.

I don't think I'd gamble on that. Wouldn't surprise me if it didn't. Probably fairly expensive to have that feature if they move to a different architecture (I have no idea what rumors suggest the cpu will be). Software emulation is never perfect, but would be better than none.

It will be common knowledge by launch whether or not the systems will be backward compatible. It's not like anyone would be faced with the decision of upgrading and just having to hope their old games would be compatible with the new hardware.

Someone made a good point about a page back. A lot of my decision will be based on what my friends get.

That will more than likely be Xbox again.

If it has superior hardware, no doubt it will be more expensive, but isn't the bluray player why the PS3 was so much more expensive than 360? I imagine these will use the same technology for their optical drives...

I'd bet PS3 takes a loss on the sale of consoles to bring their price within $50 of the Xbox 1080.

Dont really have a clue about the new xbox, but the PS4 will be between $400-$450 on launch
