Pruitts qb reasoning? (Lengthy)

Lol...Believe me, I know it wasn't going to happen, but waving a white flag against Ga State would've been as bad as it gets.
I think given the way JG played it would’ve lightened the spirts of some of us. Especially if it were BM and HE had thrown the last td in garbage time. That kid has SO much more potential than Pruitt is giving him credit for. Those that know his potential are eagerly waiting. Those that don’t would welcome the surprise

And by the way... Blow it out your ass. Lol

Sorry for being abrasive but I'm tired of the 300 yards argument. Consider that fact that UT was playing desperate and from behind and the guy still only put up 300 yards. We turned into a "passing" team. If he was over 400 then I'd say now were talking but he didn't. And we still saw the same mistakes as last year.

It would've been know as the Rocky Top Miracle..:D
May as well put in Shrout or Maurer to see what they had. With Bailey coming, unless he changes his mind JG won't be the Vols starter next season anyway..The next two games if JG struggles early. Pull him....let him pout on the sideline.
I’ve had the thought that CJP knows Brian’s potential and IF he gave him an opportunity he’s likely to run away with the job. Should that happen we all, including CJP know Bailey is gone. He’s too good to sit. They both are. So we’ll lose one. If we don’t give BM a shot we’ll never know if we made the right choice of the 2 until we have to play against him one day and I’d put money on that not going well for us.

We get it. Maurer is your guy.

JG is not an elite QB and he took some snacks he shouldn't have and isn't the type that will take over a game... but when did 65%, 311 yards and 2 TDs become an argument for the backup QB?

We just got 38 hung on us by Ga State in our house. What are we even talking about here?
Do you understand that this was Georgia State? 311 yards, a redshirt junior playing the entire game, is not exceptional against Georgia State; it's bad. Especially considering how many drives he single-handedly killed by checking down on third and long, missing wide-open receivers, turning the ball over, not recognizing blitzes, etc. One of the two TDs was after the game had already been lost - perhaps you're familiar with the term, "garbage time?"

He's just a bad quarterback. He's a nice enough kid, but he's a significant part of why we just suffered the single worst loss in the hundred-plus-year history of this program, and it was coaching malpractice to play him the entire game after the way he played last year, in spring practice, etc.

Its not about an argument for the back up. It’s about the false belief that our backups are even worse than what we’ve seen from JG. That’s simply not true.
And they could conceivably be better. Erik Ainge played as a true freshman and led us to the SECCG, including a win over a UGA team that was ranked in the top ten at the time.

That's true but if we keep losing and the team in disarray Bailey may decide there are other teams he can go to and start and still be competitive and it's not fair to BM to keep him benched when he has the potential to do well in hopes of getting Bailey. Either way we lose one of the two

Never understood this logic. Why would we care about losing Bailey if Maurer is the real deal? Like Maurer would have 3 years for us..... not like we couldn’t find another top QB recruit in the 21 class to sign here.

you may be right but isn't his job to win now?

I don’t want to seem like I’m taking anything away from Shrout because I’m talking so much Maurer but I just don’t feel he’ll provide much more than we have. I see he and JG as the same player other than Shrout taking more chances. But it kills me to see so many misinformed people in one fan base. And knowing that it was created by a false narrative makes it that much worse. I can’t believe that some think that this kid can put up 4000 yards in one season on a 2-8 football team, 65% completion rate averaging 43 passes a gm, best receivers were unranked, score 40 tds in only 10 games behind Swiss cheese o line, played in the toughest state in the country (Fla), earn elite 11 regional MVP, make the elite 11, finish 5th at the opening, travel the country earning offers throwing routes on air from P-5 schools such as Ohio state ext ext. And he suddenly loses his accuracy once he gets to UT? I’m not buying that BS. I’m sorry. I’ve seen too much to know that’s not true.

I don’t think we’re all ready to see a Freshman get killed behind that atrocious line. That to me, is the biggest reason we haven’t and won’t see Shrout or Mauer Saturday: because it’s only a matter of time before JG runs off the field in his underwear confused and punch drunk unable to think clearly.

Gave you a like for using the term " punch drunk" 😄

I don't think it is nearly that complex. JG probably performs better in practice. He should. This is his 4th year in CFB. If Pruitt has any ulterior motive in that regard it is the fear that Bailey might take a second look if it appears Shrout or Maurer are establishing themselves as the starter.

The problem with JG isn't what he does in practice. It is his decisions when in the heat of battle. In part, he is so fearful of turnovers and "mistakes" that he won't take any chances. He won't try to lead receivers open. He takes the safest throw when a slightly more risky throw would produce more and keep drives going. The defensive strategy isn't going to change until JG makes MUCH better decisions which doesn't seem all that likely at this point OR he's replaced which also doesn't seem very likely.

This is probably the best assessment of JG I’ve seen.

It’s why Cryst was able to come in and give the offense a spark a few times last year. Cryst wasn’t great, but he would throw receivers open left and right. JG tries to be REALLY safe in his throws, it’s why he sits in the pocket too long. He’s waiting for a receiver to be 10 yards away from the nearest defender.

How many TD passes can you think of that JG threw an intermediate route and it was taken for a TD? Now consider how many TD passes he’s thrown that were caught in the end zone (usually high pointed). The ratio must be insane.

You’d have to read the support he gets to understand. I’m not sure everyone would feel the same.

As I stated, our Oline is JUCO at best right now. Until Trey gets his legs under him and Morris and Wright settle in, our only option is to hope JG doesn’t die. Combine them with his propensity to hold the ball for 14 seconds, and he might as well play cowboy poker. It’d be just as dangerous. My 2 cents.

So Brian Maurer is TRUE Dual Threat QB.
Did you know that???

Would you not want a guy that has the ability to escape pressure if our OLINE is as bad as you say????

The O-line has looked the worst in the programs history the past 2 years.
It's strange that JG has also been the QB for two years..🤔 could it be that those are related? I mean Online should block for 4 seconds...right? All 5 should be able to block 7 guys...right?

I’m no JG fan or apologist. Let me state that first.
Absolutely I would love to see Mauer. I’d love to see John Mayer if he could play QB!
I see it in 2 parts. No continuity and very little talent on the line. At least until this year. Ride or die with the most talented 5 and play ball. I was just stating what the reasoning could be. 🤷🏽‍♂️👊🏼

Our o line last year was 1.3 seconds better in pass protection than BMs was in Hs. Let that sink in a min.

When you turned the ball over and put your team in the hole and then get stripped sacked on a blitz you should've seen coming since christmas. Couple that with another pick in the red zone. Also add that this is on par with what we've come so see from JG. That's when 65%, 311 yards and 2 TDs becomes an argument for the backup QB.

Go cast your vote peeps. Not that it’ll matter but someone wants to know who we want to start.
