Pruitt gets two year extension

This will be my first controversial post since joining this board but I think the optics on this are bad. The program is bleeding money and hitting up donors like crazy and then they announce a 400k raise to the highest paid guy there? I don't get it. I love Pruitt but I doubt anyone is out to get him right now, and even if there is someone wanting to poach him we can always counter and outspend anyone. Again, I am glad Pruitt is getting paid. I still think he is the coach to get us out of the basement. I just think the timing of this stinks.
You don’t wait to make an effort to retain. And this doesn’t go into effect until next season.

Same. I mentioned him in another thread. They will want a name that carries some weight and at least for now I don’t think Pruitt’s does but that can always change.
That along with recruiting. Cristobal’s at least on par and has strong connections in the southeast...specially Florida. There’s also a poster on here who claims knowledge (I know I know Grade of Salsa) that Pruitt isn’t highly regarded by the good ole boys powers that be down in those necks.

Everyone assumes that if JP leaves it will be to go to bama. He is not a "bama guy" although he played a couple years at bama. He grew up an Auburn fan, and his family were all Auburn fans, according to what his dad said on local radio last year after he had taken over the HC job at Marion Co. His dad has bounced around quiet a bit, and being a South Pittsburg guy myself, I'm not a big fan of the elder Pruitt, but i have met a lot of his family in Rainsville, AL at some various events in that area and they are all Big Orange fans now and wear the orange proudly. They all seem to be good people and obviously are very proud of JP. I like the extension, which still doesn't put him in the upper half of SEC coach pay, and I hope JP brings us back to the top and is here for a long time.

I don’t think Pruitt ends up at Bama nor do I think they come after him. They will literally throw the kitchen sink at Dabo.
Dabo is never leaving Clemson. Would you leave the ACC for the SEC if you were him? He can get to the playoffs much easier at Clemson. Besides, he is so ingrained in Clemson now there is nobody, Bama included, that will pry him away.

Besides not being a "Bama guy" Pruitt was UTs 6th or 7th choice to be head coach. What makes anyone think Alabama would ever ask him to be their coach? What exactly has he done to impress them into making an offer?

Pruitt would be perfect for Bama. He fits the hard-nosed culture Saban has in place and would likely recruit at the same level there. He's had proven success there as a DC and recruited a lot of the players who have made Bama who they've been the past decade. He'd be in their top tier of candidates if they had to search today. Since it's still early in his tenure at UT, the argument can be made that the roster he inherited is more to blame for his record than his own coaching prowess.

I don't think I buy what your selling. I think there are other Bama guys and guys from the Saban coaching tree that they would go after first. Dabo, Kirby Smart, Jimbo Fisher, Jason Garrett, all have been immensely more successful as head coaches than Pruitt. And as laughable as some may consider it, Lane Kiffin, Will Muschamp and Jim McElwain have all had more success than Pruitt.

Pruitt's record may be due in part to Butch Jones, but then again Butch Jones out-recruited Pruitt so far in both of their tenures at UT. Not saying Pruitt is a bad coach (although the Ga St game was a big red flag) but he's nowhere near ready to be Bama's head coach if Bama wants to continue to win at the highest level.

Who is this "Payton" you speak of?...The greatest and most well known player in UT football history and people just can not spell his damn name right...Just incredible...SMH

Dude seriously, how do you not know who Payton is? She’s the best student artist to paint The Rock. She thinks Pruitt is alright and finds it funny that his favorite food is cornbread. Majorvol thinks highly of her opinion. UT senior Payton Miller gains recognition for her paintings on The Rock

I"m totally on board with the wisdom of the extension. It's critical that our coaches be able to ensure those high value (4 and 5 star) recruits that there will be continuity in the program. That said...I'm not comfortable with a guaranteed $8,000.00 per week RAISE. Seems VERY premature at this point, regardless of how we THINK Coach Pruitt is doing. I like the guy. This isn't a comment on Pruitt himself, it's a question about how we compensate him.
Perhaps someone can enlighten me, as I don't follow coaching compensation packages. Is there any precedent in the NCAA for performance bonuses..?? Set some performance goals for the program..number of wins for example and when they are met...Coach gets a nice fat check. Beat Florida..add $$. Beat Bama..add $$$$. LOSE to Vanderbilt...YOU OWE US.
Just a thought.

I think you’re right. I also think recruits are smart enough to look up our last 2 coaches and see both were fired with multiple years left on their contract. A contract rarely stops a bad HC from being fired or a good HC from being poached.

That’s fair. I was operating under the assumption that’s guys like Dabo, Kirby, and Jimbo wouldn’t leave their great situations (and contracts, in Jimbo’s case) to take on the pressure of being Saban’s successor.

However, idk if I buy the notion that Butch has out-recruited Pruitt to the extent it seems you’re presenting it. A lot of Butch’s guys proved to not be as good as their star rankings would make us believe. That may be due to their development while here though. But still..

Is that Pierce Brosnan? Looks like a cross of him and Randy Quaid.

Here's why Dabo would consider Bama. Yes everyone says he could never replace Saban...so why even take a job like that? But think about it. That would be the ultimate challenge in football. To think that highly of yourself and want to challenge yourself that much that you think you can do EVEN BETTER than Saban. Dabo seems like a guy that is driven that way. For a guy as driven and confident in himself...lets just say I wouldn't take it completely off the table.

The extension reflects Fulmer's confidence that Pruitt is building a top tier football program. Do I agree with Fulmer's assessment? Yes.

Win streak is only against the lower SEC teams. The teams they should have beat and some of those games were not pretty offensively.

Well he was already at six years from the start.

Exactly.

You don't want a coach getting into lame duck status with the recruiting window but this is about 2 years too early.
