Probably the weakest team we have had in a while.

when we put up 50-60 in a half, what is Barnes doing differently as a coach?
Barnes will always recruit an athletic, hard nose defender over a pure scorer every time. In today’s game, he should be recruiting and more focused on offense. Just look at the college teams and pros that are taking home the hardware.

Thanks for starting a thread, this year’s best option, to scroll and ignore most participants! Better than trash can liners for cleaning up a mess.

I think we can all do ourselves a favor and stop trying to play the board hall monitor. Once a conversation goes back and forth around twice someone should be smart enough to just move on.

It’s hard to know from HS if a kid is going to be a “pure scorer.”
DK and Chaz coming in kinda goes against what you mention as neither could play defense and ended up all sec and newcomers of the year for their scoring ability.
I still haven’t seen a response to my question regarding complaints about Barnes offense issues when we put up 50 in a half because we make layups and fts. It’s the same offense as when we don’t make those shots and score 25.

It's akin to having to take a bunch of risky recruits or you miss on guys with fundamentals. The staff had to know the FT % of the guys they were getting along with the ones already on the team.
Carey shot 11/15 last year against us and 9/12 on fgs. I’m sure they didn’t expect 40% on fts.

On FTs? What was his % for the year? I can check. Let's not act like he's the only bad FT shooter on the team.

56.8% for the year at Vandy. TN games were an anomoly. In all the other games, he was 35/66 (53%). He was 51.5% his freshman year at JMU and 48.5% this year for a career avg of 52%.

The team has only two “good” FT shooters with meaningful minutes: JG at 80% and NA at 79%. (AA is at 78% but has only shot 18 FTs. EB is 8/9). No one else is above 70%. Most of the rotation is in the 63-67% range (FO, JPE, BB, DB). Then you have Evans at 58% and Carey at 49%.

I think the point is that we have put up 58 in a half against Mississippi, 60 in a half against Vanderbilt, and 47, 48, and 49 in other games against major opponents. Did somebody else step in to coach those halves?

JG and Ament are solid. Boswell hit a couple big ones against Auburn. JP not bad I don’t think. Felix, Carey, and Evans are mental there right now and account for most of the misses.
It’s all mental. They are going up there with no confidence and hoping to make.

Ok, so if we decide to go after a guy that has to sit the bench in a close game then what about the rest of the team? To Carey's credit he was 5-7 from the field in the Vandy game.

We got four guys that only shoot better than 70% for the year from the FT line, and two of them have only shot a total of 9 and 18 free throws all year. That's terrible.

Tbh I don’t know how often ft% comes up in recruiting as with practice, release changes and mental help it can improve. I doubt many coaches would pass on Felix or Evans because of their fts.

The length yall go to, to defend Barnes is equally astonishing.
Barnes isn’t mistake free. No coach is. I’ve questioned him about quick pulls after turnovers and rotation.
As a former player and coach for several years where we sent multiple players to the nba out of Memphis, I will never understand blaming coaches for missed layups and fts, nor can I question a coaching staffs offensive plan when a team scores 25 in one half and 50 the next half as the same plays are called and same shots taken but made instead of missed.
Barnes deserves criticism for some things but gets criticized for others just so posters fill their need to blame somebody imo.
Personal accountability for those who touch the ball during a game is lost on too many. Ament makes 10/10 fts..great job ament. Ament misses 3 in a row, “damnit Barnes the game has passed him by.” Dumb analysis.

You’d lose that bet. Middle son a brain cancer survivor after being told he had 3 years to live and thriving with no pity or excuses. His little brother playing lacrosse at UT now if you’d like to talk **** to his face about him and his siblings being cowards, it’d be fun as hell to watch a gutless punk like u get what’s evidently way overdue.
The ignore feature is your friend!

Felix shot 72% last season from the line and is off slightly at 64.5% this season. I’d consider that to be at worst “average” for a center. JMO

I’m serious when I mention the mental aspect. If I’m out there and watch Carey go 1-6 and then get to the line, my chances of making go down compared to if I had watched Ament go 6-6.
I don’t have scientific proof.

Respectfully, that's just a pipe dream. Imagine what we could have been in 78 had we not lost Bernard to the NBA, or these transfers, or Kennedy Chandler or or or. It's a new day. Players are gonna leave and players are gonna come. Money is being tossed at them constantly . Nobody keeps them all and not everyone lands enough to have what they need.

i believe a lack of playing time while at TN was more of an issue than money and that’s why they moved on. It’s two positions we could really use players of their quality.

Awaka got plenty of PT but was a fouling machine when he was in there. He's doing the same thing at Arizona. Carr had to transfer because of some personal issues
