Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

Yeah, this is what I was getting at. I’m trying to put it into historical context but I don’t know enough about how the power and money have shifted in Europe over the decades. I don’t know of any other time something like this has happened. United in ‘74 is the classic example thrown around in the British press but I’m not sure it how well it fits here.

As far as relegation goes, the players are the only ones who can change it at this point. I find it interesting that without our two world class center backs we were able to fight to a draw at Anfield but with them back in the side, we wilt at home after going down 1-0.
I have been of the belief the players cared despite reports out there. I thought Mickey was solid before being subbed at halftime, which I hope was due to being stepped on.

The captain however, was lackadaisical.

No way any of those clubs were Top 10 worldwide value at the times they went down. I think it would be almost impossible to figure out for certain, but I’d wager that it’s never actually happened before.

Didn’t realize just how rough Spurs’ run in is. They’ve got Sunderland next, and Wolves in late April, but aside from that, every other game may be against a team needing points either for Europe or survival. No real solidly mid table opponents who are likely to already be on the beach.
I think the fact that Spurs stadium is such a massive components of their valuation makes it a tricky comparison.

Also, Juventus was probably a top 10 valued club in the mid 2000s. Not apples to apples considering how they went down.

De Zerbi to the Spurs. Interesting. He has seemed lately like a manager that isn’t a long term option as he’s had some disagreements and issues after Brighton, but for a short term “save me from relegation” hire, not a lot of risk here. Decent hire for this stretch run considering the options and the Spurs current situation.

@NorCalVol67 @Charlie Kelly how yall feeing about it?

It could blow up spectacularly since he is a hot head, but he is a decent coach that knows the premier league. Several Spurs fan groups urged them not to hire him due to his defense of Greenwood.

Not having any creativity, will be difficult to pull off his preferred style of play, unless Madison and Kulusevski magically appear on the pitch.

Damn, three World Cups missed in a row. I was living in SF when they won in ‘06. North Beach was rocking after the semis and the final.

He’s a good tactician and he plays attacking football but he is known to be a volatile character so it could definitely blow up in our faces. It will be interesting to see if the players respond to him. If they don’t, it could be disastrous.

Apparently there’s no relegation clause in his (5 year) contract either so if we go down, he’s coming down with us.

Crazy to think about: the last match that Italy played at a World Cup was the biting incident where Suarez bit Chiellini. So long ago.

Saw that today and don't know how I didn't realize it. Pretty sure the US got knocked out of Italy's group that year.

Interesting. I only read the headlines so I didn’t realize it was a 5 year deal.

No chance in hell he makes it 5 years.

But with our current situation, I’m pretty sure we had to throw money at him to get him to say yes. At least that’s what’s currently being hinted at by Tottenham beat writers. Even if he’s gone by this time next year, it’ll still be worth it if he keeps us up.

The trials and tribulations of supporting Arsenal. Just absolutely brutal only being top of the league with a month to go, getting the best draw in the CL quarterfinals with an inside track to the semis and having just played in the League Cup final a week ago.
