I know how the spread works and how defenses can stop it. You're not teaching me anything new.
That being said, you're making my point! Since when are defenses disciplined enough to make the spread option a worthless offense? If Tennessee can't be disciplined to stop Air Force's option, it sure as hell won't be for Florida's athletes!
One of the biggest keys to the spread option is actually those offensive linemen. When WVU was doing it at its best, it didn't matter if the QB pitched or kept, he had a guaranteed 5 yards almost every play. Any coach would take that. WVU's linemen were incredible at the style.
I don't have my nerdy folder of info with me right now, but I think Florida returns 3 or 4 starters on their line. If they're athletic enough to get out into the flats and into the LBs' zones, but also strong enough for the initial push, Meyer will take 4-5 yards every single time.
also, not forgetting what most SEC defenses are geared to stop right now....that makes that offense that much more appealing to Meyer and his crew.I know how the spread works and how defenses can stop it. You're not teaching me anything new.

this league is chock full of great DL and LB's that can rush the passer and stuff the run.
get those guys sliding the line and having to determine who's got the ball and where, and boom...it makes defenses in this league that are designed to dictate to the offenes, one that has to wait and react to where the ball is.
if that offense executes correctly, it will take advantage of it every time.
i do agree with him though, that eventually defenses will catch up to it...but not as quickly has he thinks.
and again, a lot has to do with who is going to be running that offense. the guys running it aren't the same caliber atheletes seen at WVU, AF, Utah etc....these guys could legitimately play in any offense at any big time program in the country....which is what i think will make the most difference at UF. scheme will get you only so far. put the kind of atheletes he'll have at UF in that scheme....well, you know where i stand.
i agree....and i don't like it.No question but that your standard swarming SEC defense is mighty tasty for those running spread option.
When plating versus the spread, discipline is as important as speed and athleticisim.
Hat mentioned some horses running this and Arkansas is in the midst of transformation to the spread. Likening the offense to the wishbone of yore is comparing the machine I'm typing on to an abacus.
i haven't seen any one downgrade the talent in the SEC compared to florida? Some of you act as if UF is the only school in the SEC with top notch players. News flash guys EVERY school in the SEC has great to really good players with speed.
your right about the qb situation and having ainge as SR will give us an advantage in every game we play. lots of spring and off season practices to go...so plenty of time for development, but as i see it right now, it's likely we will have similar question marks on the O line and and Front on defense going in to next season. add to that that our secondary is going to get younger and don't we lose Wilhoit also? Also, not to forget the WR position...i think we have talent there and cut will get them ready, but they will be largely in experienced and young...they'll have to grow up quickly.
i just see similar questions going in to next season as this season (minus the ainge question mind you).
and lastly, we play florida so early....it's always a feeling out process for us. Good news for us is we will already have a big road game prior to that at Cal.
I'll put the Fl game right now in a "can" win category...but not a "should" win.
I agree overall, but anyone who fails to appreciate that Harvin is something special does so at his own risk.
Didn't say he wasn't. But the fact is that with Leak in at QB thisyear teams HAD to account for his arm and I don't think Leak got near the props he deserved this year. Given the option I would take Leak over Tebow. Leak will be an NFL qb and Tebow will not.

The most significant thing Leak could possibly hope to accomplish in the NFL would be a long career of standing on some team's sideline holding a clipboard. If he manages that, he will have succeeded in the NFL, given his abilities.
Arky only runs taht because of McFadden. They have an all American drop back passer who is a true Frosh. Don't look for them to go spread next year. And trust me, I know a thing or 2 about the spread and the diff in what the Cryer is doing and the bone.
Well, you know exactly Jack about the AR offense. I'll assure the spread is what they'll be running and that All American QB ran it in HS for the new OC at Arkansas.
agree about Leak...can't see him making it big in the NFL...Leak will get a look, but he's not tough enough nor tall enough to be anything but a lifetime backup. Tebow will probably have a more successful college career, even though he might not notch as many wins.
