Most are happy he did. Some are just putting it into perspective and suggesting not to overreact just yet.

Seems I’m fighting that battle as we speak. Yesterday I hadn’t watched the game yet but now I have. Bailey was good but Maurer was better. Idc what the “stats” say.

Bailey was more accurate ( Maurer had two or three that were off target),and looks to be ahead of Maurer and Hooker in going thru his progressions. Your bias is showing.

He had 6 incomplete passes. Is that true? 2 were dropped but otherwise perfectly thrown. Is that true? Two were thrown away. Is that true? Which means he had two passes off target and one was batted at the line.

Because if everything I just said is true, it’s not biased. It’s truth

The one He threw to janzek traveled about 45 yards in the air. The long pass to Velus went about 40 in the air. Bailey can’t throw the ball 62 yards let alone 72. Maybe Baileys timing and grasp of the offense will win him the job, but Maurer has more physical talent and upside.

The fact that he’s “fighting a battle” displays that. Most of us on this board truly want the best QB to win the competition...not the one who was followed.

If he hadn’t performed well, they’d be hammering those nails into his figurative This “meaningless practice” would’ve been CONCLUSIVE PROOF. Personally I don’t get miffed at someone hawking for their preference...simply at pretending their angle is “fact”.

I was still functioning during Worley’s time and I don’t see that comparison.

Two inaccurate throws in the first series, one was caught near the ankles(wr screen). More than Bailey had the complete game . Maurer needs to watch someone other than JG on how to throw a screen pass.

I’ll be the first to admit that he’s always had problems throwing WR screens to his right. Think I’ve even told someone on here that once. But maybe that’s evidence that Heupel is trying to work on things he needs to improve which is a good sign.

But if you’re judging him on 2 passes out of 15, I think your expectations of a qb are unrealistic. And out of those two in question, Keyton literally only had to fade inside a foot and it was a completed pass, 50+ yards added to his total and less to complain about

Look, I want Bailey, as much as anybody. He's been a VFL his whole life. All this kid wants to do is be the starting QB at The University of Tennessee. That means a lot to me, and many others, I'm sure. So......at first glance, I was excited to see him light it up. But, after I went back, and closely watched the game, while I'm still impressed with his decisiveness, accuracy, and his overall pocket presence, he did only face the #1 defense unit once. But, he did drive them down for a TD. He had three throws to absolutely wide open receivers, on obvious blown coverages. Kudos to him for recognizing them so quickly. But, we arent going to make a living on blown coverages. The kid has zero arm strength. I'd say we'd have to get the ball to the opponent's 40 yard line to even attempt a hail mary. Mauer and Hooker have cannons, and don't even get me started on Milton. That dude throws laser beams.

Nope. BTW this is Maurer’s third year. Why can’t he bulk up to an acceptable weight? He is not going to last long at 205.

Psst...there is no way he is 205 unless he has a 25-lb plate in his pocket.

And I’m not a BM hater. It’s just reality. I was like that back into my mid-20s. I could eat a 5000+ calorie diet and not gain an ounce. Things have changed....

The scouts on here are amazing like that. They can take one or two plays and tell you everything about a player’s future.

This QB competition will go well into the fall...as it should...and CJH will make a decision based on a more appropriate sample size. It would be interesting to know how the QBs graded out to the coaches instead of the yahoos on here.

You ain’t kidding! Although the word I’m getting is the coaches haven’t changed their positions of thought. I’m sure they have a good idea of who may come out on top at the moment but they’re not going to say it now and whoever that is would have to have a really bad fall camp to change their minds. How true that is? Idk but as much as they’ve seen of them vs us, it’s hard to imagine a “most likely” hasn’t emerged even before the spring game.

I see your point and it makes sense but help me out trying to figure out why they would have Hooker with the first team O while having Maurer with 2s and 3s while facing the first team D.

That’s what makes me wonder.

Bone density and muscle mass can make a man appear to weigh less than he does. Truth is he was already 202 by spring game 2019. 205 may even be light if he jumped on a scale today.

Mauer got that swag and confidence we haven’t had in a Qb in a long time... he got baker mayfield potential in this system yes he will throw some ints all Qbs do but I want a guy that can bounce back and continue to play... Mauer is a guy that will embrace the bright lights m and elevate his play in the big ones... I wouldn’t be mad if Bailey started at all especially under this staff... Bailey is the safe choice and he will take care of the ball and win games for us...I trust CJH and staff to pick the best Qb and put them in positions to succeed... I just think Mauer is the perfect Qb for this type of system he will put up big numbers and make plays on the ground and through the air and will us to some wins in the clutch time... either way this is a great problem to have I will 100% support whoever wins the job because I know they will have earned it and will be successful this season too many weapons...

That’s a big part of my overall point. Maurer doesn’t get rattled. He can throw an int and bounce back with 4 tds in the blink of an eye. When he was in HS, coach Helton came to watch him play. His first pass was a pick 6. He finished the game with 513 yards passing and 195 rushing. I understand that’s HS but the point is if he starts slow, he gets pissed and gains focus.

With Bailey, One thing I did notice was when Bailey scored he would run to the end zone and I didn’t see anyone celebrating with him. It caused me to remember him not being picked up after sacks last year. Maybe there’s something to that, maybe there isn’t. Maybe the camera just wasn’t on him at the right times. Idk, but I didn’t care much for that.
