'25 Portal Thread

It really seems like we have about 50-70% of the money we think we have. We don’t even try with the big names in the portal. When is the last time a huge portal name everyone wanted even visited here?

Not being able to get any traction with a good WR is crazy.

After as much success as we’ve had with the transfer portal - in regards to players acquired being quality contributors - maybe give the staff a little credit and not knee jerk because “big names” don’t come here

Personally, I would rather spend a large sum of money going for skill positions that will be here for a few years rather than a one year quarterback

Some people would rather be at the top of this list then the polls at the end of the year. The biggest portal players aren't consistent winners. Heupel's strategy of being selective is paying off massively, and the list of impact players we've had come through the portal (that weren't always highly touted) rivals that of any other school.

Just look at the portal rankings from last year for crying out loud. There were 34 teams ranked in front of us last year and only 3 of them made the playoff. Most of them did nothing or moved backwards.

Spend the Nico money and get some playmakers in here. Our offense has very little talent. The North Dakota State back is better than any back we have on roster.

Probably nothing more than a depth guy that can hold up well enough to give our top 4 interior guys a break. Then again, we all thought Moi was going to be that type of player and he ended up being really productive.

This is the kinda guy we need IMO. Experienced, solid numbers, and can plug into that 4th or 5th rotation spot.

I trust RG but being in the same company as Toledo and Minnesota for a player doesn’t inspire confidence.

Depends. Are those schools looking at him as a starter?

We’re talking about a D1 starter as a rotational backup here.

This line of thought is nuts to me. Big names? You mean like Nico? Some of these guys who are entering make demands that just aren’t reasonable and price tags that are the same. Culture and fit are important. Last thing any of us want is an overpaid player who is going to half ass it, and drive up the cost for everyone around him. Josh has made sound portal moves each time it’s been open, but bc we don’t sign what’s considered to be splash move the fanbase ***** all over him. All he has done is win, put up multiple SEC offensive plays of the year, a blitenkoff and take us to the playoffs on the back of an overrated QB. He will take a QB that makes sense to him and we should be ok with that.

I like him too. He just got some BVRS. Battered Vol Recruiting syndrome. It comes from the Dooley and Pruitt years mostly. Say what you want about Butch and maybe some lucky timing but he got some pretty good talent. It wasn't because he was really good at it but it happened.

Again, how are you going to convince a good WR to come here when the QB situation is in flux?

You have already heard QB will come with a WR add. You go with that and talk to WR. Our staff is just not aggressive in recruiting and portal and will eventually cost them.
