'25 Portal Thread

I doubt we commit a dime for a receiver until after spring and we give more reps to our 3 lead returnees AND 3 prized WR newbies, AND 2 new also prized lengthy TE guys. Not to mention the unexpected return of KITS. Only so many balls to go around.

Might not be how we want to burn our open roster spots and acquisition money.
I doubt that, sincerely.

You are correct. Everyone gets outbid here and there. We unfortunately have been outbid consistently this off season. We can either deny this is happening or do something about it. Thats why people are wanting to get more people donating.
my question is who have we truly been outbid for? Josh Thompson? We ended up taking Pendleton, who is similarly ranked. Possibly Carnell Tate, who never entered the portal? The Branch brothers reportedly wouldn’t even entertain an offer.

Exactly. We MIGHT have gotten outbid on Pregnon. But he's always been a west coast kid, so we probably would have had to significantly outbid Oregon to get him here. There isn't a discernable difference between Thompson and Pendleton and Pendleton has more eligibility remaining with arguably a higher ceiling.

To be fair, $25/month isn’t really contributing either.
Yes it is. If everyone who traveled to Columbus or everyone who signed the petition to fire Cuonzo Martin gave $25/month we’ve have a base budget of $9M/year.

Problem is the majority of our fans give more complaints than they do dollars. $25/month is less than a dollar a day. Less than a round of golf. Less than a box of shells. Less than a tank of gas. We need to convince the masses to donate $25 instead of discouraging it like you have

I’ve discouraged it, yet I donate $25 per month.

Got it.

For less than a dollar a day, you, too, can feed a starving college football player....

I can see the late-night infomercials now.

Well we know Mauigoa, Seaton, Tate to name a few. I mean being out bid happening every single time we lose out on a recruit. But with the way the money is flowing these days, it’s hard not to think that. Especially with seeing things floating around that our NIL isn’t as strong as other big programs.

You cannot be serious. As of 2023, the population of the state of TN is 7.1 million. Now let’s be conservative and say out of that there are 2 million Vol football fans. Now if they all gave $25 per month, that’s 50 million per month. Now 90% goes to acquiring of players. That means we would have $45 million monthly. Now that’s just the state of TN. That’s not counting the Vol fans in other states or overseas.

How many members do we have in VN? 30-40k? Say it was 30k. Say each person on here donated $25 per month. That’s 675k per month JUST for VN. You don’t think that would help?

I meant what I’m donating compared to other people.

You and dude typing these paragraphs…why? Feel smart? You’re throwing numbers out that we will never see.

“iF 30k mEmBeRs DoNaTe”…you’re wasting time. Congrats on doing math…I guess?

Conservatively???? You think 1 in 3.5 people in the state of TN are not only sports fans but are specifically Tennessee Vol fans.....

Actually, over around 1.5 million of the population are children under the age of 18. So your opinion is that at least 1 in 3 adults in the TN are not only sports fans, but are specifically TN Volunteer fans.

Yeah, that isn't close to being true.

That's funny. For me the focus is not on sending the money to an already wealthy person. It's about having skin in the game. And about doing what little I can to make one of my favorite hobbies (watching and following the Vols) a little more enjoyable.

I've learned a lot about you from this post.

Idk why we wouldn’t pursue a guy like Cam Camper. A near 1000 yard receiver this late in the game would be a huge get. He would fill our need for an experienced receiver, but doesn’t seem like we are trying for him.

its not a Tennessee specific issue you want it to be.

You mention three separate guys who went to three separate schools over multiple years. that's hardly very damning. those three guys were on those other schools lists too. so for each player, all of the non-winning schools were "outbid" too.

I can throw out names too. Sanders, Mathews, Nico. its not like we aren't bringing in top talent with our bidding. I am not counting Faizon because he hasn't enrolled yet, but he would be another name.

Even if we had all the money yall are dreaming up there is no way we would get each of those guys. money is just the new laziest argument to make. just getting the best guys doesn't guarantee squat.

If I heard correctly, AP said on Josh & Swain yesterday that, at least at the CB position, he feels the staff won't look to add anyone till after spring practices, and probably only if they feel the guys they have on campus won't be ready for an enhanced role while McCoy recovers. I can't recall if he shared a similar sentiment about WRs in that the staff will want to see what they have in the spring and then try and grab someone in the 2nd portal window if they feel they need to. But it wouldn't surprise me if that was also the case this late in the game with the winter portal window.
