Players Sitting out Bowl game

Yes it is. So is honesty and he’s not in the same category as McCaffrey and Fornette.

Which is exactly why he is trying to get healthy so he can demonstrate his full abilities at the Senior Bowl.

Alontae is a fringe prospect, so impressing the scouts at that event is the most important thing he can do to improve/create his draft stock.

He has all the play on film that he's going to have, so the Music City Bowl can't really help him.

Are our guys sitting out projected to get combine invites? I know pro day events and tryouts are out there too, but combine is king.

I doubt Alontae gets an invitation to the combine, which is why his health for the Senior Bowl would be of such paramount importance.

So capitalism is good only if you’re guaranteed McCaffrey or Fournette 1st round money, but a dinged up Alontae Taylor should risk his 3rd-5th round money by playing in the MCB because.....why exactly?
I’ll play the game, only 259 picks. If you’re not first round projections don’t act like first round money. Big difference in those guys vs his potential slot. Capitalism also comes in the form of no debt leaving school. Those school debts being paid off help with investments instead of checks to the lender.

A rare brain cell amongst this thread.

Cade has been nursing a high ankle sprain for a while now, and he has the opportunity to be a professional football player. If anyone is giving him advice and is telling him anything other than to get healthy, they are doing him a disservice.

Alontae has given far more to this University and this football team than anyone commenting in this thread. He stuck it out through the hard times when he likely could have left. But these folks are right, he's a "quitter" that is abandoning his team because he doesn't want to play in the worthless Music City Bowl.

I wish they would rid us of more than half of these meaningless bowls, because maybe then they wouldn't be so cheapened that the actually mattered. Right now, they just don't whatsoever.

Other than the opportunity for more practice time for the younger guys, I agree with you. Win or losing this game doesn't matter one iota. Bowl games were originally rewards to the players and fans for a successful season. They even picked the national champion before the bowls way back when. If the Vols were in the playoffs, I'd expect every available player to participate. If we're playing in a mean nothing bowl that doesn't determine anything more than rankings 5-25 (if that), who cares? Let the young guys get the reps at bowl practice and be ready for next season and give the battle scarred vets that need the rehab time before the draft time to recuperate. Bowl game participation won't gain these guys a penny in their NFL stock, but it could cost them millions.

This is just such an entitled take. They should play because I'm a fan and want to see it!

I bet if you anonymously polled the lockerroom, Alontae and Cade's teammates wouldn't say they are being quit on. That's because they get it, and you just don't.
Didn’t have problems playing last week. Bowl eligible already but stuck it out then. Shows unwillingness to remain under guidelines and respect for the other men you have been beside for years. Loyalty is not what it used to be!!

Don’t act like first round money? What does that even mean?

ANY potential draft pick should do whatever is in his best interest to maximize his draft stock, whether it’s a sure thing like Kyle Pitts or some fringe prospect who needs the Senior Bowl and the combine to improve his draft status.

Regarding the scholarship, if you’re suggesting AT owes UT a bowl game appearance because he’s leaving school with zero debt, I couldn’t disagree with you more.

He has been injured most of the year. Under his circumstances, I would do exactly what he is doing.

No, they quit because they didn’t make the playoffs. They cry, whine, and moan and just quit on their teammates. This is unacceptable in any situation.
Mellow out man. I have a feeling your going to have accept a lot more things about college football that you don’t like. This is just the beginning. It sucks but this the new reality for fans

It's the new age of acceptability. Hard to close the box again because it's been accepted. Just like we're not going back to the days of pre NIL regardless of how much confusion it creates and unequal playing fields.

Everything is different now, not many players have the heart and or dedication to their teammates, fans or school. (Still many of the really good ones actually like to play football with their teammates)
Many players are only in it for themselves today and say screw the team.
I played baseball and you couldn’t keep me off the field for any game unless I was injured and everyone of my teammate felt the same, we just loved to play the game.
Do you think Al Wilson would have sit out the bowl game? I don’t!

I’m afraid your spot on, this is only the start and yes the fans will suffer………

good post Lawrence, it is what it is, unfortunately

We’re starting to see more and more of this each year, and it isn’t right. Something needs to be done about this situation. I believe they should play in the bowl game. Those teams that make the playoffs, you don’t see their players sitting out do you?

Ummmmm.....pretty big difference b/w the Muffler Bowl and the playoffs for the national championship. Just sayin

I don’t have a problem with them skipping a meaningless game. If you think fan opinion means anything to players these days, I’ve got a bridge I’d like to talk to you about. They might have a passing thought about their teammates but not enough to impact this decision. No sense in risking a career for an extra game that means nothing if there is a chance they can go pro.

If I'm a teammate of said NFL prospect that opts out of bowl game, I'd be selfishly disappointed but super happy for my teammate that has the real possibility to realize the dream they are all there for.

I believe it is natural for the fans to want see the players on the field. Hey, it is called being a fan. We should also understand that the players risk potential injury with every snap they take and some of the injuries can be life changing for the worst. Inky Johnson comes to mind. He was projected as a first round pick IIRC and was on his way to becoming a millionaire after the 2006 season. The traumatic injury he suffered during the Air Force game changed all of that. The brachial injury was a career killer for him. Hell, he no longer has the use of his right arm. I realize the situation is different for AT but he is preparing himself for the NFL draft to impress an NFL franchise. If he is not healthy for the combine and doesn’t impress he could become an UDFA costing himself and his family mega dollars. Most of these guys have mouths to feed after college. Did you catch all of that keyboard champ? The fans will suffer? LOL!

More like a new type of financial opportunity for select student athletes.

Capitalism is good right?
Peyton Manning was slated to be the #1 overall pick in 1998, while Tennessee was playing in a bowl game with no championship implications (there was for Nebraska, but not for Tennessee), and he was injured with a ruptured bursa sac (right knee). He still played... because that's the kind of competitor he is.

Capitalism doesn't have to mean being a pu$$y.

Last week he wanted to keep UT back top in the state. That's a bad example. Alontae is a middle Tennessee kid, and the Vanderbilt game mattered to him.

Put simply, you're trying to moralize a choice that's not moral in nature. You don't know his situation, when he was injured, if he reaggravated it last week, or any other fact related to his personal decision. Neither do I for that matter, other than that he has said he has a nagging injury and wants to be healthy for the Senior Bowl.

Quit crying about it, because you are just making yourself look bad.

0% chance you’d call him that to his face
