Patience

Okay, here's how predictable some folks are on VN.com. Folks who believe they're witty. Bearded, for example. At some point, even though he's fighting it right now because I can predict his every move, at some point he's going to post in this thread. And what he intended to say, before I called his shot, is "oh, here we go, it's today's installment of JP's defense of Pruitt." He'll probably shift his message just to "prove me wrong," but we all know that's where he would've gone. Heh.

Patience.

This thread is not about Pruitt. It's not about Chaney. Not about Fulmer. Not about Butch. Not about any specific person or event. Not about any specific time frame.

It's about you. You and me.

There's a fictional movie about one year's NFL draft. It's called Draft Day. Has Kevin Costner in the lead role. A lot of us have seen it. For those who haven't, I do recommend it; far better than any movie about such a constrained topic should be. Here's the first of a series of 10 short youtube clips leading up to the climactic scene:

I'll summarize. Costner, the general manager of one NFL team, takes a series of seemingly nonsensical decisions in preparation for draft day. Then, over the course of the day, he seems to double down on the bad choices until, at the end, all the weirdly-shaped pieces of his plan suddenly fall into perspective and his genius is revealed.

Okay, so what? That's just Hollywood making up a feel-good story.

Well, here's what. Costner's character was smarter than the folks around him. The folks trying to give him advice. He knew exactly what he was doing. He had a plan, and he executed it. Even if they couldn't see how it would work until near the end, even if the team gathered no fruits of their labors until the very last minute, he knew what he was doing. He was smarter than everyone around him on his business, his job.

Now what if a Tennessee coaching staff knows their subject better than you and I do? What if they know a bit more about college football than us? About recruiting kids, developing them, forming a team out of them, and winning games and championships with them? What if they know every piece of that better than us?

When did we start assuming they don't?

Where did we lose the ability to wait and see? Where did we lose the ability to give a subject matter expert some leeway, some rope? Sure, they might just hang themselves, but...given that they're probably smarter on the topic than we are...they might just see further ahead to a brighter outcome than we can.

When did we lose patience, as a fan base?

Because I can assure you, we have zero of that now.

END NOTE: no,, this isn't about Pruitt. This is just as much about how we treat the coach after Pruitt, or the coach after that, as it is about how we treat him. This is about US, and a serious flaw we've developed as a community.

You had me right up to Gary Danielson. Epic fail.

Ha-ha, not a fan of Danielson myself.. Plus, deep down, you have to admit the only "epic fail" is Coach Jeremy Pruitt, based on his current results, but who knows, maybe you and other members of the fanbase will be right, and he will turn it around.. We shall see...

I don't think Pruitt has ever been the coach of Tennessee. I think he's the puppet in place for Fulmer to trot out with his game plans he would have used 10 years ago. He's a yes man. The shell game they've pulled over the years has gotten them both paid. But, since I've only been watching them since the 70s some will say I haven't been around long enough for such conspiracy theories.

Yeah, I get that. I get frustration and disappointment.

Because I feel it just like you do.

What I _don't_ do is turn around and childishly insult and belittle every coach and member of the administration I can get my hands on in an effort to assuage that frustration and disappointment.

If I don't like our coach, I can say, "Sorry, Jeremy Pruitt, I don't think you're the guy who is going to bring us back to championships. Good luck in your future endeavors, but I'd prefer you left Knoxville." I don't have to christen him Beldar Cornbread and talk about how idiotic his accent and word choice are. I don't have to belittle him for wearing a neck scarf differently than I would, or wearing a shirt that looks like a barber smock. I don't go lowest-common-denominator calling our AD F at Phil and asking if he's still addicted to donuts, and talking about how he--the guy who won us the only national championship most of us have been alive for--is a self-serving traitor to the program. I don't talk about how JG is still over-throwing the ball a month after he last touched it.

That's all childish, immature, and hateful. And none of it has a place here.

But that kind of hate and venom, that's 90% of the content of vn.com these days. You can't find a thread without it. It's everywhere. And as it becomes more and more common, even good, mature folks, folks I once respected, are joining in the hate fest.

That's beyond frustration and disappointment. We all feel that. We don't all turn 12 in the process.

There's a difference.
I gave this a like, because you did an incredible job of spotlighting the things that people on here harped on profusely throughout this season. Phil, "christen him Beldar Cornbread " Fulmer addiction to donuts, and JG still overthrowing the ball while in the Transfer Portal 🤣🤣🤣.

I laughed the whole time while I was reading it. Wasn't laughing at you. Because you're right. And it's sooooo sad that it has gotten to this point.

It's obvious that you want things to change as much as everyone else. But for some reason you can't understand HOW it needs to change.
Which is very confusing to me, because your'e obviously a smart guy.

Pruitt is the most unqualified HC in the history of Tennessee Football. There is a time for patience and a time for swift action. Every day he's coach here is a small step back for UT football.

Didnt watch the Florida game this year for the first time since 1992. I dont want to be out of patience. I just am.
Last year was the first time I didn't care. After the 0-2 start I literally lost interest. I still watched every game, I believe, but this year I missed a couple games and while I followed on my phone, it didn't bother me. It's sad.

Because you missed his point entirely. But, you do you. The guy has had 2 years plus a cluster ****. I thought JG was a terrible QB. I couldn't understand why he didn't throw the Frosh to the wolves. But, HB realistically did not practice until the season started. We'd have gotten crushed just as badly with JT. BM can't stay on the field for more than 3 quarters. I understand why he did what he did, I didn't like it. I hope you never have a job where the super fires you prior to giving you at least a good try. 4th guy down the line that gets axed in 3 days won't come to work for him. Either that or he will demand 4 X market price. See, I expressed my displeasure without damning everyone from the trainers to the University Pres to hell. This place used to be fun. We've never had this pie in the sky top 10 every year football team that some want while VN has been alive. The vitriol because a coach doesn't deliver immediate Top 10 teams every year is sickening.

Thanks for the answer to a question nobody asked. I said nothing in my statement about firings, or QB's, or top-10's...nothing at all. I didn't damn anyone to anything. Do I need to rephrase the question to get you to actually address it, or would pictures be preferable?

I've not admitted he is an "epic fail" yet. Not looking good though.

No, because you talk the same line as 90% of the other FF posters, you get lumped in with them. You are part of those that the OP is speaking of. When you understand that, you can reclassify yourself. Otherwise you are simply one of the complaining vitriolic masses.

Reminds me of a person in a bad relationship, despite all the bad treatment, still comes crawling back to suffer more of the same abuse

At some point, you have to break the cycle, despite of how much you think you love the other person

Again...you fail at comprehending my statement or intent. I'm not trying to reclassify anything...I am more than satisfied with my position. The statement of mine you referred to had to do with realistic expectations of the program no matter who the coach is. Let me know if the words were too big, or if I need to write it in crayon for you.

I’ve been a Tennessee fan living in Bama my whole life and that’s nearly 40 years. But I just want you to know the problem with the football program is YOU. Look this **** was a dumpster fire when JP took the job. (Easy 6 year rebuild) If you fire him nobody will come to UT ever. Y’all are the laughing stock of college football. It’s probably to late for this coach. Support the guy for a few years instead of running all his players off. At least it would be in better shape if in 6 years if he can’t do anything. Just step back and look at the whole situation. It’s been 14 years since Saban was hired at Bama. He has more 4/5 stars riding the bench than we have on our team. I think Pruitt can get us to maybe a Gus Malzahn level if left alone. Go vols.

how dare you come here and inject common sense and logic. Are you that dense?? dont you know that we are in an instant gratification world and if you cant win right now then you need to go. Planning?? we dont have time for that. Fire him and hire a new coach. And if he loses the first game, fire him and get a new coach. The writings on the wall he sucks. We cannot afford to wait on development. Win, win, win. that's all

I disagree. No improvement in this football team over the last three years. Actually they’ve regressed over that timeframe.

Pruitt lacks the management skills to be a head coach, I'm sure he's a great DC, hell everyone is a great DC at Bama. He's not the guy

C’mon Man! I know there are some very delusional people that call themselves Vol fans, but if you think for a second that the fans are the problem with Tennessee football, you are one of those delusional fans yourself.

Our administration hiring an individual with no prior experience as an Athletic Director is the “current” issue #1 that needs to be handled. As far as Pruitt goes, I can see he knows football, I can see he knows talent, but the issue seems to be (and this is heresy) him micromanaging his assistant coaches instead of working WITH them to build things correctly. His actions of playing JG too long is more than enough proof that he is is in over his head. I don’t want to hear excuses why we didn’t have a serviceable QB on our team. The high school in my hometown develops QBs better than this staff. And that is just the tip of the iceberg of issues this team has and it all falls back on his shoulders.

I don’t like having to go through another firing and hiring fiasco, but at this point, it may end up being the only option. But this time around a plan needs to be in place before any moves are made to keep from it turning into a circus and further damaging what little integrity we have left.
