Open Practice Highlights

The offense looked and functioned completely different with Dobbs under center, that's the point I was making and if you can't see and acknowledge that then I can't help you.

Some see it as OL improvement, some as having a better QB, and some say both. Play calling to Dobb's skill set may be the biggest factor.
I can't really have confidence in the OL since no one has distanced themselves at any position. We need to settle on the best 5 and work on continuity up front. Hope this week we see clear #1's side by side.

I am going to add the elephant-in-the-room disclaimer any time I see that stat.

This is a good example of manipulating statistics. By averaging the records, you are cheapening our two wins over 7-win bowl teams. Thats like beating 12-0 Ohio St and 0-12 New Mexico St and saying, "well, our opponents were really more like 6-6, when you average." You're also discounting a close 29-21 loss to the SEC East champs, Mizzou, in the one loss in that stretch. So while you can use your stats to make your point, looking at things on a game to game basis gives a much brighter picture than your "disclaimer,"

A couple of things:

First, the OLine didn't look that bad. I started breaking down and scoring the reps from this film, but gave up when it became too difficult to figure out who the players were because of poor video quality, shots blocked by other spectators, etc. At the point where I stopped, I'd scored 3 wins for the DLine, 2 for the OLine, and 1 rep that was a draw. Yes, Coleman got beat in one rep, and Charles Mosley got beat in another, but those were just two reps out of several. Taken as a whole, it was not overwhelmingly tilted in favor of either side.

Second, in the clips above, we saw one or two reps per player. Yesterday evening, Coach Jones mentioned that some of these players have been through 300-400 reps so far in fall camp (he was talking about WRs at the time, but you can run a Line rep about as quickly as a QB-WR pass rep, so they should be comparable). Point is, we shouldn't think we know much at all about how these players are doing based off the grand total of 5-10 reps we've seen each of them run. It's a drop in the bucket to what the coaches are seeing.

I'm following the OLine's development this fall as closely as anyone else here in VN, but we shouldn't make the mistake of thinking that we can see enough to determine how well or poorly things are going. We're just gonna have to depend on the coaches' assessments for that...and see how it works out when we actually start playing games.

One thing's for sure: thanks to practicing against such a talented DLine, our OLine--Coleman, Jashon, Jack, Mack, Brett, Kerby, and all the rest--are going to be far better in September than they would've been otherwise. That's the primary reason I have hope for something good in 2015.

Go Vols!

You know way more about football than I do. As a fan I am hoping you are correct.

I think the Oline will be better. Also, Dobbs will often have another 240 lb blocker/runner standing beside him so Dlines will have to contain more. They will try and force Dobbs to throw because they can't rush the QB every down like they did against Worley.

As far as our O-line is concerned....
For passing plays, I'm only concerned about how many seconds they give up before it seems like the QB is getting pressure.
For running plays, I'm only concerned about who they block and if they get their guy to the area they need to.

Kyler Kerbyson did fine. Did a fine job blocking Curt Maggitt. So...mixed results, not as one-sided as that.

Thomas got whipped by Barnett, twice. Kerbyson held up. Thomas is a center playing tackle. Hopefully Richmond grows up fast and takes that spot or we finally see Blair. ( not banking on Blair)

Might be time for Blair to turn in his uniform after the season When just arrived high school players are ahead on the depth chart...The future plans do not include him

When did Kyle Phillips get his black stripe removed? I must have missed that news.

It's a bit of a catch 22 as well. If the o-line had pancaked the D-line on every rep people would be saying that the D-line sucked. It's hard to measure where we truly are until game day against OK (I assume BG doesn't have a stellar d-line)

I don't think so. The edge of the Dline is about the most proven unit we have on the team.

Yeah, not every team in college football can be undefeated or even have a winning record.

You beat who gets put in front of you. They did that when Dobbs was put in with the exception of MIzzou.

And here's and elephant for you. That Mizzou game we didn't have our All-SEC MLB. Yet we were still in it up until the last moments of the game. But don't let facts get in the way.

We were no different with Dobbs (DEEP OCEAN BLUE FONT)

He did fine against Barnett a few days ago as well.

Thomas has improved.

I think Jack Jones will be a starter. I really do.

I don't think so. The edge of the Dline is about the most proven unit we have on the team.

I get that we have talent on the D-line, but so far our only reps we have seen this total o-line unit take (Noting that the unit has some injuries that alter its makeup at the moment, so it may or may not be truly representative of the starting line come season time) are against a terrific d-line with two established defensive ends and some incredible young talent at D tackle. My point is that measuring the o-line performance against our d-line doesn't give us much information to work off of, because I gurantee we will never like up against Barnett and Maggitt in a game.

I would just say we need to calm down a bit on the boards for a couple weeks until we get to see some actual games, before we go making judgments of talent or lack thereof.

Maybe not, but its better on here than over at VQ. I just got sick of the BS by the same crowd over there. Really am liking VN much better !!

What did they try to sell you?

Did anybody else see Grant Ramey trying to sell VQ hats last night via his Periscope "broadcast"? AND...which frankly...looked like he was doing from a 1999 flip phone...

Nobody was worried about the offensive line when we closed out the season at 4-1 with Dobbs under center. He makes a difference.

That's not really the case. The "1" against the same Mizzou that GA destroyed and the Vandy game, had many still worried. The Oline has been mentioned as a concern daily in the off-season. There has never been a time when "nobody" has been worried with this ol.

O line looks pretty awful

Until our O-line tears holes somewhat consistently (for running lanes) in an SEC defensive front, I'll reserve judgement. Its been sooooo long since that happened I can barely remember.

We generally had O-lines like this in the 90s. Back then if wasn't unusual for UT to sustain 70+ yard drives regularly.
