One program changing development

He played 11 game seasons vs 12

Johnny played a huge role in advancing this program. He drug us back to relevance and Fulmer carried us to a championship. Record and talent wise Butch is on par with what Majors accomplished in the early part of his career. Do I believe Butch has the same ceiling as Johnny? Hell no. Do i believe he got us far enough for Fulmer 2.0. HELL YES.

Don't insult a hof football coach who has won a NC, developed a Heisman winner, beat Bear Bryant, and won multiple conference championships like this.

No offense but this was Johnny's record in his first 5. It says we are ahead of schedule.

11 4 7 0 .364 6.49 8.30
1978 Tennessee 11 5 5 1 .500 8.94 6.22
1979 Tennessee 12 7 5 0 .583 10.62 5.54 17 Bluebonnet Bowl-L
1980 Tennessee 11 5 6 0 .455 10.16 8.62
1981 Tennessee 12 8 4 0 .667 4.06 3.39 Garden State Bowl-W
1982 Tennessee 12 6 5 1 .542 6.99 3.82

What kind of code did I just read?

11 - Do you know how many times Johnny went .500 or lower in his time here? 6

He only had 3 which were lower.

In his last 9 seasons he had 6 with 3 or fewer losses.
in his last 6 seasons his teams finished in the top 14 or higher 5 times.

Records were totally different back then, but how many times has Tennessee finished in the top 15 over the past 10 years or so?

Wrong. It was 4 times and 3 were in his first 4 years.

You are counting <.600 and I did not. Either way those first 5 years are Dooley level fireable today. We are already in the levels Johnny reached mid career. Butch is not a better coach in any way to Majors but we look back on where Majors got us and overlook the poor seasons.

Back in the day teams could/would wait for team/program development. Now days that cannot be done......because while your waiting, everyone else is making a change. Everything was totally different back then........not really apples to apples.

Johnny was our version of Mark Richt. He won the SEC a few times over a long tenure, but had some frustrating losses too. But overall helped the program be stable and have good results most years.

I agree and we are on track at 5 years for what Johnny did in 7,8,9.

I am not suggesting anyone ride along with Butch for a decade. I am saying we are at the point for a successful launch IF we just take the next steps.

Math is hard.

You have no concept of the mess of a roster and of the facilities that Majors started with. Your only understanding of Majors seems to be from reading Wikipedia... and it's not very good.

Ok. It was all marvelous, and it only took us 9 years to finish ranked in the AP poll. 85 sugar vols

I know it was only 9-1-2, but that is still prob my favorite season ever. Crushing Miami's championship dreams, the battle of New Orleans Tennessee song, Beating #1 Auburn, beating a ranked Bama, blanking KY and Vandy then destroying Miami.......man that was the frekin season........I know I know not the best Tennessee season, but my favorite.

Georgia did what Vol fans, wish UT would do, go out and get their coach, Georgia got rid of Mark Richt, a much better coach than Butch Jones, to get "their" coach

So Smart was their guy? A first time HC to replace a HOF coach? I wonder if UGAs top picks for coaches turned them down? I find it hard to believe that Smart was their top choice.

Pretty easy really. He was top DC who fielded best defenses in country yearly.. yes it was under saban but that means he learned from saban. He played at UGA and is a Georgia guy, cares about that program the way Fulmer did TN because he was a player here
