Offseason: Pick an annual OOC foe

I've been to 2 road games vs. UCLA. Rose bowl is a pretty good venue.

Texas and Michigan also appeal to me. It's amazing how few games we have played against these storied programs. Oklahoma and Notre Dame are also pretty good teams to play.

I've always thought it was interesting that USC and Notre Dame are rivals. Distance doesn't justify it, and I'm not sure how that one got started.
Does travel distance really matter? Ask Missouri who landed in the east. Their fans have to spend some $$$ just to get to away SEC games.

I like these better than UNC or VT. Honestly they don't have enough history to really make it worthwhile. Maybe I'm cocky, but I see UT as being upper echelon and being down is an aberration. It's an aberration when UNC and VT are "up".

Thing is, you need buy in from both schools. I don't think their fanbases would be as onboard with it as ours. But who knows. I think Fulmer, as AD, understands the value of these big games.

One last thought - Speaking of how some teams haven't come up for us - When SEC_CG started, I thought "We have a chance to play and beat Bama twice in a season". Crazy we haven't played them for a SEC title game yet, after all these years.

In state would have to be Memphis, they are the only decent team, and only recently became decent. In theory would help recruiting in Memphis, and maybe N Miss and East Ark. One state senator wants to force the issue:

Senator wants University of Tennessee, University of Memphis to compete annually

Out of state, agree that VaTech, UNC, Duke, all would be good rivals. But Va Tech can be good, even though they are down a notch, UNC is occasionally good, and Dook is an upset threat as long as Cut is there. Thus I say Memphis. And yes, I know they are improved, but also just lost their coach.
Not going into that rant again. You can read it in the link you posted. We gain nothing from playing Memphis. Listening to their fans’ overboard hatred of UT is like getting a root canal. The recruiting angle is worthless. Playing in Memphis once every two years means nothing to these players and we lose a home OOC game if we play in Memphis and that’s a lot of money. Add to that, we got six of the top prospects in Memphis over the last 3 recruiting classes and we don’t play them now. Memphis is a solid NO for me.

Either texas call it the battle of the T or something

Or

I'd say Oklahoma cause they are in the middle ish of the country and it should help with recruiting.

From a Sooner perspective, I enjoy playing different teams out of conference and don't mind mixing it up as much.

Teams I wouldn't mind playing more regularly though...

Oregon
Nebraska (the Sooner-Husker games when they were in the Big 12 were insane)
Wisconsin
Michigan
Georgia (we owe them a serious butt kicking)
Miami (let's face it, we could use a good cupcake team every so often and going to the beach would be a treat)
Stanford
Any of the military Academies
Florida (do they really use pee on their field?)
Oregon-Oklahoma would be a really fun matchup to watch.

Tennessee v Unc

I don’t think there’d be much to gain slaughtering a weak VT team

I'd vote North Carolina for a couple of reasons:

1) The two used to be rivals and have played 30+ times.
2) We depend heavily on recruiting the state of NC. This would only help that.

We used to play them only in Neyland, so that would still be okay. I'm pretty neutral on whether we play them or not. I do think it would help recruiting in Memphis, so we can agree to disagree on that.

In general though, why add a mandatory OOC foe? We already have 8 games dictated to us by the SEC, leave the other 4 free.

I'm just saying that if we have an annual regular OOC, and if its in state, Memphis is really the only option. UTC isn't good enough, and we already play Vandy every year.

The OK vs NEB games used to be must see TV back in the day. I'd like to see you guys playing each other again.

We do have them on the upcoming schedule for a home and home. I was thinking something more "regular" for nostalgia purposes.

They pretty much have sucked since letting go of Bo Pelini.
