I posted the same thing the other day but OGbabyavi pointed out to me that Herman was hired within two days of Strong being fired.
Also, it's been mentioned with the early signing period that Gruden would want to hit the ground running asap.

Yeah...but that was after the season had ENDED. Irrelevant in this case because Gruden isn’t coaching. The only delicacy is how long after with four games remaining in this season.

Have a Gruden

1) Man hasn't coached in 10 years
football has evolved since then.
Could he catch up? Yeah if he hires the right guys.
However, how are is intitutional control skills?

He hasn't had to lead even a poistion group, much less a team of young adults.

2) College process. Gruden having to recruit...after he's been a big time sportscaster is not going to happen. Recruiting is the lifeblood of a college program. He's too far removed from the type of mentality you need to have to recruit.

3) He's getting paid just as well as a bigtime college coach with 1/10th the stress. He's adding years to his life with this choice to stay in the broadcast booth.

There are better suited coaches out there for us to have. From a current knowledge standpoint and day to day more motivated to win in today's football game.

Pretty much EVERY coach in the SEC ACC BIG TEN are more qualified to coach Tennessee at this point than Jon Gruden. Including Butch Jones. And Butch Jones obviously needs to go himself...

Tennessee will hire a good coach.
Unfortunately so will Florida.

But as is stands now.. Butch is not even in the top 8 coaches in the conference. Tennessee is arguably the 2nd best program in the SEC historically. That's not a good match.

Butch will be fired. But Gruden would be even worse!
So let's keep our eyes up on REALITY and hope we can outbid some teams.

Thanks coach Mora. I guess we didn't offer you the job.

Please God let's not burn McBride's red shirt!

Not sure why divine intervention is being called upon. Very unlikely it goes unburnt. Need to get the only other scholarship QB available some reps in case the Devil hurts JG.

Heck...I’m only up there when there is politics going on that need to be addressed or folks I need to say hi to. 75% of every game I’m in seats like everyone else. Box is a great tax write off and entertainment piece....nothing more. Worthless game experience IMO

Created this account in 2012 when I believed JG was coming to UTK, we hired a mediocre coach that we all knew was average.. nothing more — I’m still holding out hope. Keeping my fingers crossed that guys like Atlanta VOL are right this time!!! If you’re describing box seats like this... you gotta be plugged in right!?! GBO #FireButch #TeamCindy

True but the narrative could still be the same in that it would be obvious this real was underway while the coach was still employed. That's the point I was making.

Edit: a more comparative circumstance would be urban and OSU. Not sure of the timing on that deal.

It’s people like you who’ve made TN what it is: mediocre. You can’t see the big picture. You just want to get another coach and roll with him for 3-5 years and believe it’s all about the X’s and O’s.

It’s bigger than that. We have an institutional culture of settling for mediocrity. Doug Dickey was AD for 20+ years. Between Majors and Fulmer we had 2 coaches over 25 years. Not to mention the president and chancellor were all on board and understood that football made everything else great. And somehow, over the past 10 years, we’ve become “just another university” with no identity, no leadership, no purpose and no vision. Hiring Gruden is a message to the the students, faculty, players and fans that TN is coming back to its roots. TN isn’t accepting average anymore and it will all begin with the growing the flagship program back to its proper place, on top.

THATS what hiring Gruden will bring.

It's the way it is many places. Universities, and the culture in the US now a days want everyone to succeed, and actively tries to even the playing field. Instead of trying to set the bar high they lowered to to make it more obtainable for the lesser. So why try and work hard to over achieve if it's not needed.

This carries over to everything else when instilled in younger people over years. But the Universities for the most part have this mind set across the board. It deflates the competitiveness that's essential in sports.

For instance, I can appreciate a great effort at times when my team doesn't succeed. But it shouldn't be the norm to be satisfied or expect that. In today's culture it's acceptable. It can be traced back to years ago when people made a fuss about "ever one deserves a trophy". Those things only continue to get worse when these issues become the norm.

Also universities add a whole are only concerned about profit. Educating kids comes secondary and is only high up on the list because without that it would put a very serious kink in the very reason they exist.

What they don't realize is the profit that's so important to them can take a huge hit if they don't take the athletics more serious. Luckily a lot of people still care about it or they wouldn't care at all.
