Official Jon Gruden Thread XVIII

Hey old friend.
John is very much like what I assume you have heard. I don’t know what he is doing but I do know that silence is a powerful leverage tool.
I also know the AD is locked down tight. I had surmised that only a small group 10 or so know exactly what is happening. That being said I had that conversation last night with someone that told me it was more like 3. That is as far as the AD is concerned. I have several good friends that are in that office. I will not say what they do as it would give them up. I can also tell you that they know “something” is happening and it has been stated if anyone hears anything and it is repeated their position will be re-evaluated. I am certain John does not want any lose lips that can be traced back to him (my opinion).
.

So Phil was brought back into the fold in June. Is there reason to think this has been in the active works since then?

Successfully making this hire, in his first year, buys Mr. Currie immeasurable capital. He becomes a major power player in Knoxville, the SEC, and across the college landscape.

It would be a major accomplishment. Many have tried to hire Gruden, and they all failed.

They were in person at the Titans game....I knew EB4H wouldn't post on here the new information DTO and I had discussed.

I know DTO...we talk.

There was no conspiracy. Many of us, esecially those from the first go around, compare notes to see what lines up from different places. That is normally, not always, the good info.

My bad EB4. I didn't know you were in the clique. DTO just texted me and said go ahead and share everything. He is tired of the silly games, he said.

This is pretty spot on. I know the one person in the office and he's basically all cut out past being very confident Butch won't be back. Other than that, he doesn't know anything. And technically he hasn't been told that, just said there is way too much going on for there to not be a an exit and succession plan in motion.

If the group were 10, I'm pretty sure he'd be in. Has to be closer to 3.

I said the same thing yesterday. That makes three of us.

Currie, Fulmer, Gruden, Peyton, Anderson, Haslam, and some lawyers?

I think that he would if it gets the right coach in position. John wants everything right but I would say he is not a micromanager as a byproduct of fear. He keeps up with all the details but lets people do their job. I know for a fact that those in the AD have been very happy since he arrived. I have been told that the AD now has direction and leadership. Now don’t take any of that as a love fest as I was a bit weary at first. As some of you may or may not know he was one of the main architects of the firing of Phil. Believe it or not Ole ham fisted hammy was not the main driver. I don’t want to debate the merit of that firing but I think we can all agree that it was not handled properly. I think he has grown and learned and that is evidenced in some part to brining Phil back into the fold. Maybe an effort to put right what once went wrong. (Dr. Samuel Beckett style) :)

I believe in 2012 some influential people got Gruden's interest. UT's family of boosters weren't unaminous on hiring Gruden and the AD wasn't willing to comply with Gruden's demands. Thus, no Gruden.

Completely agree. Currie, from a business perspective, has to make a splash hire that can create immediate success for UT. If not, he looses any and all credibility with administration and the fan base will look at as "same old same old for the next 3-5years". Which in turn will be a big lose in revenue for the school. It would also change the dynamic of UT Football for several decades. Just my opinion. I hope/pray its Gruden, regardless it has to be a splash hire to restore faith in the University and set Currie's legacy.

Thank you my friend.... this answered completely what I wanted to know as well as the follow up which would have been the Fulmer issue... thanks again

No problem. Another thing that may have helped John mature as an AD is that one of the things he witnessed was the fact that Clawson was brought in as a coach in waiting by the administration (Clawson was not Phil’s choice) and that started the downfall. So that perspective may also lead to letting go of staff control. Which is the major control issue that we have had on the Hill. Believe it or not the staffing decisions have not been 100% under the HC. They are approved to whatever extent by AD personnel and some very strong boosters. For the record my support was for David after Bama Dave retired.

Fair enough. I believe you guys & did last time. Was just curious ab that point- appreciate prompt response!

I've said all along that the timing is very different this time around.

I'll let this out....I've been told that Gruden has expressed being tired of the political slant of ESPN and the NFL "kneeling" controversy. Couple that with ESPN's efforts at budget cutting...it's only a matter of time that his contract comes under scrutiny.

Those issues, along with a new more compliant UT Administration, and Manning's handling of the boosters issues....it's a new day.

Public info $$ support backs this up

Something needs to happen soon, I leave for a year long tour in Greenland with limited internet. I'm basically off work for the next 2 weeks. This thread is awesome, yet so addicting. I can't wait until something is announced!

Let's shoot for a week and a half. I need to get back home so I can place my bets. Don't need the 1800 going down anymore so I can make a few bucks. Maybe.

Soon
