Official Jon Gruden Thread XVIII

Is it really that hard to imagine? Kiffin is one of the best offensive coordinators in the Nation. Gruden will want to assemble a staff of the best coordinators and position coaches money can buy.

I'll put it like this.. If you take Kiffin's history with Tennessee out of the equation.. I could easily see Gruden going after him.

Head coaches do not take demotions to coordinator bye choice. that will never happen, only way Lane is ever a OC again is if he fails at being a HC.

I believe any needed "control" issues were taken care of in the big hitter meeting the Sunday after the Georgia game.

I'm not sure he'd ask for "full control" anyway.

I must bow to your experience and understanding as I have zero insight to what type of person either Gruden or Currie is just asking based on what I have heard and read .... my source never said anything bad about Currie and liked the hire when he came back

One question from a negative viewpoint.... (I know guys, I know) if Currie runs such a tight ship, and based on your post and every thing I have heard and read here as well that seems to be a consensus....

That being true; so does Gruden and demands full control.... is Currie, in your opinion, the type of guy who would give up control to Gruden that I have heard is one of his demands?

I think that he would if it gets the right coach in position. John wants everything right but I would say he is not a micromanager as a byproduct of fear. He keeps up with all the details but lets people do their job. I know for a fact that those in the AD have been very happy since he arrived. I have been told that the AD now has direction and leadership. Now don’t take any of that as a love fest as I was a bit weary at first. As some of you may or may not know he was one of the main architects of the firing of Phil. Believe it or not Ole ham fisted hammy was not the main driver. I don’t want to debate the merit of that firing but I think we can all agree that it was not handled properly. I think he has grown and learned and that is evidenced in some part to brining Phil back into the fold. Maybe an effort to put right what once went wrong. (Dr. Samuel Beckett style) :)

I'm not sure if I fully understand what is meant by "Full Control"

Is this strictly from a budget standpoint? Or does the AD/Boosters actually make team-related decisions? Like who to start, what offense to run, who to offer scholarships to, ect..

Might be a dumb question but I'm not familiar with how things work at the top.

I think largely it has to do with qualifying for admission, and perhaps staffing.

I don't think it's a dumb question, because I don't fully understand it. I believe the Thornton Center and standards were part of the conversation.

If Boro gave me the go ahead I'd share in a heartbeat. I don't care if it turns out to be true and makes me look like an idiot. It's a fan forum where no one actually knows who I am. If I get info from people I know, which is pretty rare during coaching searches, I share it.

Difference as I've said many times is that I don't know Boro so I'm not going to share it. I'm not sure how else to put it.
Why did Boro choose to share it with you? (Or allow DTO to share it with you?)

Kiffin just left the OC position of a national champion program to be a HC. He is not going to step back down unless he has to, and he likely has at least three years before that will happen. But, it is Kiffin, it could be less....

Though having worked under Saban AND Gruden on your resume would be pretty impressive.

I don't know Mr. Currie...I was a Blackburn guy. But everybody that I have talked to has been super impressed with him and they way he is doing his job.

I don't know....that's why I quoted it. I know there were some issues around the Thornton Center and admission standards. Those were the type of things where leeway and input seem to have been provided.

I probably took this ?full control ? from someone that posted and compared it to Bama and Saban and reference may have been of Saban.... remember I am not posting based on knowledge here but a lack of it on the subject

We are talking about 2 very ego driven people, but one's ego can't survive without giving up power to the other. So my guess is that Currie gives up the necessary power to bring Gruden in.

They were in person at the Titans game....I knew EB4H wouldn't post on here the new information DTO and I had discussed.

I know DTO...we talk.

There was no conspiracy. Many of us, esecially those from the first go around, compare notes to see what lines up from different places. That is normally, not always, the good info.

A move like that ends up feeding your ego...sans results.

Thank you my friend.... this answered completely what I wanted to know as well as the follow up which would have been the Fulmer issue... thanks again

Currie does not have time to "control" the football program, because he has numerous other sports programs within his area of responsibility. He is looking for a competent coach that he can delegate the responsibilities to. I think all of this "control" talk is overblown.

The bigger issues with Gruden, who has never been a HC in college, are compliance, admissions and academics.

Successfully making this hire, in his first year, buys Mr. Currie immeasurable capital. He becomes a major power player in Knoxville, the SEC, and across the college landscape.

That is also why I think Phil was brought in for too

Maybe we can finish the east and south sides of the stadium and the ramps then... haha

Could you imagine being the AD that Gruden to coach for your school. That immediately rockets him to the top of the AD food chain.
