Official Jon Gruden Thread XVII

Let me preface this post by saying up front that I know I can gtfo, no one cares, I'm not a real fan, etc. etc. etc.

That being said, I'm not necessarily saying it's Gruden or bust but if they screw this up and either don't fire Butch or fire him and attempt to shove another bargain bin hire down our throats, I believe I am done.

Seriously, as much as I hate to say it, I think I will walk away and find something less futile to invest my time in.

The last time I really posted on here was in the OG threads and it was a real pleasure to interact with you fine people. I got to hear a lot about the things we all had in common and things we didn't. I had a lot of fun at the expense of Arkansas.

Like many of you, UT is part of my identity as much as my race and gender. Most of my family are alums and I grew up at my great-grandfathers knee watching games or going to games, and I was lucky enough that my kids got to spend time with my grandfather watching games. Even though he was wasting away from colon cancer at the time, he never missed watching a game.

After the Jones hire, I did exactly what you say. I realized I had spent too many Saturdays angry and frustrated. We gave up our season tickets and more or less quit going to games and for a while we didn't even watch them.

UT has been good to my family and we are lucky enough to be able to donate back to the academic programs, which we do. I watch games now when I am able and I have ups and downs but feel more like a passive observer than I used to.

I like coming on here and lurking sometimes because the passion of the fans never ceases to amaze me.

One thing I have learned though is that being part of the UT family is unconditional. Nothing is required of you except love for this fine state institution. How you choose to express it is up to you.

TLDR: Go Vols!

Feeling the same way. It doesn't have to be Gruden or Chip, but if I have to google the next coach I think I will finally be beaten down by the UT admin and admit defeat.

For me it doesn't have to be Gruden or Chip either, however if it isn't;

Gruden
Chip
Shaw
Peterson
Patterson
Dantonio

Then I will know that Tennessee is not concerned with winning at the highest level.........they would just be concerned with the negativity Butch has caused over the past couple of years.

I mean really if your going to hire someone who has won 8 games or so a year (over the past many years), or if your going to try an up and comer......why even bother.......been there done that.

Nice post!

What you say is true.

I didn't have the privilege of attending UT, or any college. Lol. I'm a definite sidewalk alum.

But it does represent my state. There are few things in this world that brings me joy like Tennessee football. I have been a fan close to 40 years. I take pride in the flagship school of our state and what it represents, and the football team plays into that in a very large way for me.

I don't donate to the school, but I have spent thousand upon thousands of dollars in other ways. Tickets, fuel, hotels, merchandise, you get the idea. Plus tax dollars that go to the school.

But the last 10 years have been hard. Mistake after mistake after mistake has led us to this point of demanding something better from the UT administration.

We know how much money they make off the fans and the fact that they have refused in the past to spend it in the form putting a good product in the field makes me think they really don't give a dann what we as fans want. The yokels don't care what we do, they will continue to spend money and full the stadium no matter what we do.

Well this one won't. If they don't try to rectify the damage they have done over the last 10 years I'll do what the others are saying and find other ways to enjoy my Saturdays. I won't spend money on trips and everything that goes along with it. I won't buy merchandise, I won't even go out of my way to watch games anymore. I drove 45 minutes one way from the job I'm working on to watch us get shut out in our own stadium by Georgia. I have done that every weekend this year but I won't make that drive again to watch Butch waste talent and not be competitive.

I won't become the fan of another team but if the university keeps being greedy and refuses to give us fans a decent ROI (a competitive, established, proven winner of a coach) then I'm done. I'll probably be less than a casual fan.

And it really does hurt me to say that because Tennessee football has always been a part of my life.

Did anyone happen to watch the Finebaum show this afternoon? Ik, ik, not a fan favorite around here but he's grown on me the last few weeks.

An unhinged caller from Ohio called the show to defend Butch and how the show was disrespecting him. It blows my mind he still has so many supporters. Still. Still. STILL!!

That guy was out there. I wonder if he's on VN. If so he needs to stand up. (so we can give him HE**)

Let’s play a game.

Let’s assume Gruden is hired.

1) How fast does UT sell out of season tickets?

2) Nike comes out with the chucky/Gruden face UT shirt. How fast does it sell out?

Look, I personally like the guy and think that he would be an upgrade. I am curious though as to the obsession that many seem to have with him. The guy is barely over .500 lifetime. Yes he won a Super Bowl, but that team was primarily constructed by Tony Dungy. The cornerstone of that team was a Monte Kiffin led defense. So in light of that I ask, why the obsession? I have never believed that there is even a remote chance that he is coming here to start with, but let's pretend he is. What makes him more valuable than a proven commodity like Gary Patterson for instance? Mods feel free to merge if necessary with one of the many existing Gruden threads if needed.

The Great Grude is not an assumption...its...Soon.

1) already gone, 10 year waiting list

2) already gone, 5 year waiting list

I'd go

1. Kelly
2. Patterson
3. Gruden
4. Stoops

if I were ranking the A-list. Any of the above would work swimmingly.

First off barely above 500 in NFL is actually pretty good. He doesn't get to pay UMASS to come play him.

2nd, that defense was Monte Kiffins....the offense he inherited literally put up 30ish points TOTAL in 4 playoff games under Dungy.

Grudens offense tied the Dallas Cowboys for most points scored in a playoff stretch... Hint more per game that Dungy scored in 4 games...

Gruden had his hands tied due to no money available in the salary cap (something that was done before Gruden for there)

Everyone seems to forget that he played HIS Raiders in the Superbowl... His team he built vs the team he took over in the Superbowl.

All in all, he won his division 5 times out of 11 years coaching.

There is not a "but" after winning a Super Bowl. Besides, the guy is a football junky and could teach incredible fundamentals (not just in a bye week) and develop pro caliber players. Kids would flock to UT to play for him, etc...But it will never happen, imo.

Because it requires zero thought, he is and will not come here and neither will Chip. It is next to impossible to get them out of the announcing jobs once they take a break.

Tee Martin
Frank Wilson
D.J. Durkin

In that order.
