Official Jon Gruden Thread XLVIII

My BVS kicked in last night (Battered Vol Syndrome for clarification).
PREFACE: I am a huge fan of CPF. Though I admit in my spoiled younger days, I was critical of him and on board with a change. Looking back, it has been the single most destructive thing UT athletics has done in my lifetime.

With that said, rumors were always around suggesting CPF would never hire anyone he felt could take his job. Maybe that's a bit of paranoia considering how he ended up with the job (if you choose to believe the back stabbing stories). I guess there's a grain of truth to every story. Anyhow, if you are incline to believe the rumors then the question that hit me was: Will CPF hire a good/not great coach? Will he hire someone who will have some success but not outshine his legacy here? I use Saban and Bear Bryant as an example. Did Bryant, Jr. Bring in sub par coaches so nobody took his dad's place in history? Again, after the decade we have all had as fans, I can't help but have negativity creep in from time to time.

If Fulmer makes the right hire, he goes down as a Vol legend. If he doesn't, his reputation with the fans will be ruined. He has nothing to lose by knocking it out of the park but everything to lose for striking out.

i think he would like to be known as the AD that got us out of one of the darkest periods in our history.

no, he'd love that.

pretty much agree.

i'll jus say this about Tee, because i agree with everyone that points out the limitations on him...they're real.....

but...what if he turns out to be great? even if it's only in a OC position right now under a les miles...what if Tee is great? think about how that might look, and is it not worth taking the same chance on bringing him in, as it is to pass on him because he might not be? under the circumstances, if you can get Miles for 2-3 years, and turn it over to Tee...may be best case.

just sayin'....continue to grude....carry on.

I'm still firmly on the Gruden train. However, if that doesn't happen, I would hope we go for someone who has the potential to take us to an SEC championship and could be here for a long time. I would rather take a long shot than settle for someone who will not get us more than 9 wins a year. Would like to see Fulmer interview Bill Clark (UAB). If Clark does not get Coach of the Year, something is really wrong with the voting. He performed a miracle with his team this year and has a great record with a school with almost no facilities (don't have a stadium near campus) and a board of trustees that eliminated the program three years ago. Probably the all time greatest year of coaching in college football.

Looks like everyone forgot their xanax this am. Anyone ever seen a pack of Hyenas eat? They cram in around the meat ferociously and as soon as a vulture or another critter or a noise happens they scatter like scared chickens and gradually creep back in to eat more. Thats how this thread works.

Faith waning and all that. Its not faith if it wanes.

I have said this before. Kiffin NEEDS a strong presence around him, like he had with Saban. Without that, he's too immature to lead a big program. Kiffin can call plays like a dang wizard, but I think he would be trouble.

I said this before he was hired, but when he was the apparent frontrunner:

Lane Kiffin will be at UT for two years at a maximum if he's hired.

I was chided for saying this because no one had the wherewithal to see what was going on. Practically one year to the date afterward, we saw what happened.

Kiffin shouldn't need a babysitter, he should be directing the bearing of the ship. Just another reason he's not needed on the Hill.

Hubbs confirmed that Morris was interviewed last night in Dallas.

harvester, gang, am i the only one that gets bummed by morris? it's not even a gruden thing. i just don't get it. what am i missing?

(harvester, not saying anything about you, just quoted your post :hi:)

I don't want to bring Tee in as the HC because I genuinely do not want to derail his career progress. He either needs to be an OC under Miles, learn from him and then take over OR he needs to take a HC job at a mid-major to get a feel for the job. :twocents:

Which is exactly what I think happens

Hypothetically.

You're Phil and it's your decision 100%.

Haslam tells you he will admit to paying players while you were coach. You know it's true.

He tells you if you hire (insert your top choice, Gruden, Petersen etc.) he tells.

If you hire (insert your least attractive coach, Doeren, Schiano etc.) he keeps quiet.

Whatcha do?

Kind sir, no worries. Keep your eye on Gruden, don't worry about hearing of him (Fulmer) interviewing people.

Fulmer would love to be known as one of the best coaches and ADs in UT history. I believe for Fulmer, hiring the best possible coach to lead us to championships would give him a sh*t eating grin a mile wide.

After the $hit show last week, I would think people wouldn't believe much of what comes out of Haslam's mouth. JMO

Hire the top choice if for no other reason than to hear Bev suffer through another presser.

I don’t think we should look too much into the coaches being interviewed. I remember PV saying that every candidate that’s interested deserved an interview. Since he was obviously close with PF I’m sure they were on the same page on this one.

i also had thought that, maybe (maybe) since fulmer had never been an AD, that he was doing due diligence not only for this hire, but also compiling that "list" that all AD's are supposed to have, hoping to never have to use it.

i think maybe we're both right.
