Official Jon Gruden Thread XLVII

FWIW one of the mods on TOS said last night the only 2 coaches Cade Mays would talk to from UT are Gruden and Miles. Siap

I have mixed feelings about this.

I get it, but its also pretty arrogant. Part of me hopes Gruden does come and doesn't answer his phone when Cade calls him.

Whatever, I don't really care.

I see your reasoning! To be honest, I hadn’t given the NFL a thought. We stopped watching it. True, they have enough of a black eye right now and it would take focus off the game. But IF we hire Gruden, it will definitely need to be announced soon to keep the Haslams from undermining and sabotaging the deal.

I really don’t know that there will be a good time to announce should it halogen. The optics aren’t great.

The early signing period has thrown a wrench in any etiquette that might previously have been reserved for the NFL games, and the NFL hasn't helped their own cause either. We also have the bowl selection news coming out today. I personally don't think we should try to time this to anything other than what is right for our schedule (read don't give the Haslams time to screw it up) and we certainly can't wait until MNF season is over ... jmo

Gruden til it’s not.

But....

I’m confused about the Miles naysayers. His WORST record was 8-5 from 2005-2015, and he has seven seasons of 10+ wins.

First choice? Definitely not. But I would 100% support this hire.

I'm with you, Chet.

It is always encouraging when considering hiring one of the more senior candidates, especially those who had great success--championships--in their past, but were nonetheless pushed out of a previous job, to imagine the motivation they must feel to prove (a) they still got it, and (b) the program that dumped them made a mistake.

Les Miles chewing on grass is dangerous, and comedic, but too hot-and-cold to count on. Les Miles proving he's still got it, that might be a whole 'nother Les altogether.

So, yeah, not my first choice either (Gruden), nor probably my second or third (Patterson, Petersen), but I would still be excited to see what he can do if we get him.

I can agree with this. He don’t sound ALL VOL to me

Interesting take. Where would the hurt feeling and backlash come from? It’s definitely going to have to be done sometime. I don’t think we can wait till after Christmas if it’s Gruden.

Why can’t the announcement be Tuesday? There will be a four hour CFP playoff selection show today on ESPN. Seems like today is not the best day for max attention. Monday is probably out. Tuesday seems more logical.

I THOUGHT I remembered Mays saying after the championship game Friday night, after naming his top 3 teams and we weren't one, that he was also asked "what about UT" and he said something to the effect of 'depends on who the coach is' ... he's not out, not yet

False.

He said Egren didn't have as much interest in this as some people claim.

I just want to know more.

How much interest does he have? How much interest do I think he has. How much interest do you think he has? Is his "known" interest just financial? How much money is he willing to throw in?
Agree, and maybe one day we will know. Right now it seems we are all on an airliner that is having serious mechanical issues. The flight attendant has briefed us, we are all scared about the outcome. But behind those cockpit doors, the pilots are running the checklists, trying to save us and themselves.
I believe we are going to have to trust those guys with their experience and training to save our a**.

Sara can you provide the addresses and timing of where emails and posts need to be directed.
The volnation tsunami can be initiated to protect our great university, this hire, and coach Fulmer if need be.
I agree with other posts that this action needs to be very prudently invoked, so as to not lose its impact.
If those in the know deem it necessary, the big orange bastion will be ready for battle

Les is still better than what Currie was trotting out, from Schiano through Leach.

I just wonder how all the coaches after Schiano (we can probably guess how he feels) that Currie 'courted' last week feel now after knowing what transpired when Currie was axed ...

It's very simple. It's not a smokescreen. Any AD worth their salt can and should interview multiple candidates and not lock onto just one. If Fulmer is doing his due diligence, he will be interviewing multiple candidates and at least getting a verbal "sure, I like this" before proceeding to at least a couple more.

By not having a couple in your pocket in case your number one falls through, we end up with what just happened with Currie where he jetted around the country randomly talking to damn near everyone that was a head coach.

It's called "back up plans" not a smokescreen.

Yep, and you can't necessarily reach any conclusions by the timing.

I ask Sara, Grand, and SFD if they'd be interested in coaching the Vols...and if so, when they can meet.

They all say yes, naturally. Sara says she could get with me Monday. Grand is willing to meet this afternoon. SFD would prefer to sit down together Tuesday.

So SFD might be my (unspoken) favorite choice for the job, but still only the third I'll meet with. To outsiders, that might look like she's my third choice, but au contraire.

Bottom line: we'll probably never know how Phil racks and stacks the choices among those who are interested in the job. We will only ever know who he hires. Which will, of course, have been his top preference all along. ;)

My guess is that they were receiving calls that affected their decisions. I doubt this is a huge surprise.

As usual, I’m a few minutes behind but if I’m understanding you and Mink. Emails of encouragement to Bev & Phil and...

Social media warfare at Pilot/FlyingJ/Browns!?!

I think I like it.

Morning

Still trying to keep up with everything here. I have been working like a rented mule for the past week and have not been able to post very much.

I just wanted to point out a couple of things regarding PF's coaching search. I know we are hearing a lot about Miles right now but I do not think a hire is imminent.

During PF's press conference he directly addressed the need for everyone to come together and work as a team to all pull together to be part of the solution. I believe that he will vet a number of candidates over the next few days. I also trust that he will consult others to include boosters and VFLs to make sure we have ongoing cooperation after the hire. I cannot see him rushing to grab a coach as he knows the impact of a rash decision.

Based on the information that is out there and the continued reference to the boosters and their engagement of CJG as part of the initial search, I think Gruden will be the first fishing trip.

Besides the information we receive on this site, there are two valid recent indicators that CJG continues been in play:

....The Count Haslamovich stories
....The CBS Sports article that came out early last Sunday morning stating that CJG was in play.

I think PF will continue to build a list and vet other potential hires until a name is on the dotted line. But I truly believe that CJG will have to say no thank you before we move on to other options.

Keep the faith folks. If this does not happen it will not be PF's fault. It will lie squarely on the shoulders of HoH and his minions for undermining the CJG negotiations last Sunday.

Take Care,

CH_V

Yea, I'm not gonna give him too hard a time, like I said, I get it.

I don't blame him for being concerned on who the coach will be. It was just the attitude I got from that statement.

It'll all work itself out.

I couldn’t adequately predict a time lol. I reckon Tuesday works as well as any other day.

I think that's a good guess VFLnSFD, they would have to have been using us as much as Currie was using them. Currie almost certainly knew at some point early to mid week that his a$$ was done ... one would think.
