Official Jon Gruden Thread XLVI

Update.

I am hearing that negotiations between Doyle and the Miami Hurricanes have hit a snag. Many in the know have speculated that yesterday's leaks of these negotiations forced UT's hand to make a move and make a move they did by ousting Currie in favor of one Philip Fulmer. I am told that the move certainly caught Doyle's attention and has made him pause in making a move from the Vols. Late last night Doyle released a statement addressing the Fulmer hiring.

"I was pleasantly surprised and happy to see Tennessee make a move to indicate they are seriously striving to get the football program back to where they belong. I believe they could not have selected a better man for that job than Phil Fulmer."

Strictly speculation- Though nothing has been decided and these situations are very fluid, I think things are looking extremely positive on the Vols/Doyle front. So much so I feel like things may have swung back to Doyle favoring the Vols.
More updates as things happen.

It defies logic, doesn’t it?

Haslam is a classic narcissist. He played along with the boosters for a while, but ultimately his narcissism was his Achilles heel. If you haven’t spent time with a narcissist, it’s hard to grasp. I have. The level of destruction, completely illogical to rational people, is astounding.

Haslam as far as I’m concern got run slap over by a big Orange Train yesterday and there’s not a damn thing he can do about it

Yeah, you're dead wrong on this one, Hammer.

Phil has to bring Gruden in, or force him to say no. Phil knows that. Listen to how many times he and Bev acknowledge the role of the Vol Nation fan base in yesterday's press conference. He absolutely knows that expectation management is a big part of this search now.

And expectation management starts with showing the fan base that you understand their interest in Gruden.

So he has to make the attempt, and be seen doing so.

It's as plain as day.

LEt’s hope so....this makes total sense.....let’s pray the Tampa phone is ringing right now!!!

Good morning my fellow grudens, got to go do the Christmas shopping thing today with the little woman. Y'all have a great day.

Not trying to be difficult but only trying to understand.....my understanding was that the (what is now Fulmer group of Thornton, Ergen, Anderson) all were preparided to pull their support if Haslam did not fall in line early on with the Gruden plan. My understanding was that it never came to that and that everyone fell in line with the Gruden plan.

If that is the case then why would Currie / Haslam reverse the plan later.....just doesn’t add up.

Trust me guys, I am just trying to figure out if Gruden is at least possible. To me and my wife, he makes the most sense to get this program reversed and back on top in a matter of hours. This would blow the lid off “Champioship Saturday” and would make the national pundits blow their minds.....

If you really want the answer go back and read, everything.

Someone posted yesterday for the first time that Atlanta's posts about a plan A and B, and that maybe the plans were A Haslam plays ball, and B, he doesn't.

It was the first post I saw that took the words for a different meaning, ie plan b was another coach.

Brilliant. I think the original Atlanta post is gone, so I haven't re-read it. But, it makes a lot of sense, and the news that broke Monday of the MOU on Friday the 24th and meeting for the 26th to sign, the CBS release before the USA today piece, to finalize is when HOH went and did hat he did. And, I truly believe Manning was the catalyst for HOH to hang himself and was one of the truest Volunteers in all of this, not a "traitor".

If you really want an answer, go ahead and cancel your weekend and go back and read everything from about 16th or 17th on, or

wait and see what announcement comes out.

Fulmer basically said Tee Martin is going to be
head coach Vols.

I honestly thought he said something about having coaching experience. To me that actually didn’t sound like Tee. Will have to listen again. I was just about in tears seeing the captain back, and was a bit distracted in my celebration dance

He specifically made the point that he wasn't a HC before he became ours. Sounds like Tee to me.

Help me understand why Currie never executed it.....

One does not *control* a Jon Gruden. There is likely a Chuck Norris-style continuation of that notion, but I don't know it.

Thus, people who desire the *control* do not want a Jon Gruden....who would if present, have control.

Incompetence on Currie's part, yes? Almost worthy of being fired, I tell you what! Well, look at that.....done and done.

I think you can drop Ergen out of the list. Seems like Anderson and Thornton were the two main players in the Anti-Haslam camp of big boosters.

So the best interpretation I've been able to come up with (and this is all rumor and speculation) is that Anderson and Thornton took it upon themselves, before Butch was even fired perhaps, to start lining up Gruden. They likely told Currie what they were up to, and he probably gave them a "sure, whatever, go ahead" kind of response. He may even have given them a member of the AD staff to take with them for legitimacy.

Meanwhile, Currie already has his marching orders from Jimmy Haslam: to go after Schiano. He probably knows it won't be a very popular choice, so he keeps his moves secret.

And it all comes to a head last Sunday, when the competing approaches run into one another as word leaks Currie is about to sign Schiano. That's when the Anderson-Thornton team realize they've been a sideshow (from Currie's perspective).

That's how I'm reading the tea leaves, anyway.

When she shut down Adams a huge **** eating grin found my face.

Then when she said she understood the fans and the program tears rolled down my cheeks

Huh? I don't hear that. At all.

I’ve been charged to find the right coach for these circumstances: head coach, assistant coach and coordinators. I wasn't a head coach when I started. More times than not, you like experience to come in, somebody that has been a head coach. We'll see where that goes. As far as recruiting wise,

Once the contract is signed, the other boosters aren't concerned anymore, they think it's finished (that fat cat saved the little orange fish). Everyone just waits for the announcement. In the meantime, Haslam and Currie go off and get schiano.

I get that it doesn't make sense, but absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Davenport should have fired Currie at this point then....
