Official Jon Gruden Thread XLIV

So gruden isn’t happening now... i get in your eyes he’s the only one who can fix it but it’s not happening... whonthe hell would you want since your “smdh” at Gundy??? Please tell me... until you name some one who could come then no need to say Gundy isn’t the best choice

You do know this is a Gruden thread. You can take your opinions and questions to another one regarding Gundy.

Never said anything about paying $10M to hire Gruden. I just don't think that doubling his salary to $8M was necessary to hire Gundy. I think it's a desperation move to save Currie's job and I'm concerned about the long-term implications on the reputation of the school. Paying the third highest salary in CFB sets a bad precedent for any coaching hire by UT in any sport in the future. Especially since I'm not convinced that Gundy is a "top" coach. Good, yes. Top coach remains to be seen. Again, just don't think Gundy has proven he's worth $8M regardless of the situation UT has put itself in.

That's a fair assessment.

I don't know if he's a great coach, for sure a very good coach, but like I've said with Sumlin and Miles, we could do a lot worse than Gundy.

He might not be worth $8M, but gotta spend money to make money as it were.

Look, I love this school as much as anyone here. I was born at Fort Sanders in 82 the weekend of the Bama game. I attended from 01-05. I bleed orange and think this is the best university on the country.

But no top tier coach is coming here anytime soon. This is our best option. Overpriced maybe, but at this point we have no other options. Did you see the list of names out there today..... This is the best available option.

Let me break it down for you.....

GRUDEN
WAS NOT,
IS NOT,
WILL NOT,

EVER coach here.... sorry.
Wow, I wish you had posted sooner, it would have saved me a lot of time spent in this thread.

GTFO

It chaps my backside that you even worry about hiring a coach right now and not getting rid of the cancer. Hope to hell you're a young person or you will NEVER see a top tier coach in your lifetime if we don't get rid of the crap that's running the show. Send emails, pick up the damn phone and stop complaining.

And yet when Mullen was bringing these type of classes in he was limited by MS St...OSU isn't much better. Look at what he's done with those recruits and extrapolate what he could do at TN with our recruits.

that kind of thinking has always baffled me....WTF does that mean...what he will do with OUR recruits.

you cant understand, that if Gundy is the coach, then recruits will be HIS recruits no matter where the hell he is coaching ?!?! SMDH :banghead2:

Respectfully yes. That's your opinion which you are entitled, but I really believe Les isn't quite as washed up as everyone seems to think. He was 114-34 in his tenure at LSU with 2 National Championship appearances winning 1 of them. Granted he did have some ups and downs but nowhere near what we've experienced the last 10 years. As for Kiffin he was a bust at first but I believe his time spent with Saban and given the right staff around him could produce some really good football. JMO like a**holes everyone has one

I'd pick the guy who is young (50) has won a ton of football games (100+) and has competed with the top coaches in the nation and beaten them. Kiffin was basically a walking NCAA violation who screwed this entire fanbase and university. I'm amazed at the level of BVS it takes to make people want him back.

Gundy would be an incredible hire.

At this point in time, so would Uncle Rico.
The University of Tennessee, through the actions of its prime benefactors, is behind a tremendous 8-ball with the coaching search. I don't know if it was planned this way (which would be an amazingly detailed and orchestrated production) or it just has ended up this way. But we are not in a very good position with any negotiations regarding a coach.

Finebaum just basically said that Gundy was a good hire...also said GS was one too...similarities...aaaand go!

Just scratching the surface...

Would you rather drive a resto muscle car or a rusted out Ford pinto?

Would you rather a man that sticks up for his players or covers them up?

Would you rather win ball games or lose them similar to this season?

Would you rather excitement or dull talk about Tennessee

Would you rather have a fun Offense or no offense?

Would you rather a mullet or chop fkn wood. Whatever the hell that means..

I’m all about getting Currie and Bev out, but can’t that still be done with a good football coach on board?? If Currie can get Gundy, he should. The cost is a bit outrageous but guess what, it’s where we are. We are gonna over pay for anybody right now. You think if it comes down to Tee, he’s not gonna take advantage of the fact that we are grasping at straws? And I’d be ok with that too, but if you give me the choice, right now, I’d take Gundy. I’ve been here like many of you since 2012, bought in all the grumors but I think I*t* was a long shot to begin with, and even more so now. If they succeed in firing Currie, great, but there’s no assurance that if they do we get Blackburn or Phil, we may end up with another Hamilton for all we know. That is a mess that’s gonna take longer than a few weeks to fix, in the mean time, if we can get a good coach, in spite of the circus that’s going on now, then we need to pay up and lock him in. IMO.

It means that he can probably sign 4 and 5 stars here, like every other coach who ever coached here. Nick Saban wins huge because he signs top classes and is a good coach. Gundy wins at a high level and has done so without top classes. Give a guy a Ferrari and he's going to outrun a whole lot of Buicks.

Gruden. Will. Not. Work. Under. John. Currie.

So give us the ammo - or better yet, people with proof, the boosters who courted Gruden need to put something out in public!!!

I've emailed & tweeted - nothing is going to come of that! Not at the current level - practically nothing on twitter about firing Currie!

While this is true, but to play devil's advocate, they are finally doing what we've always asked them to do.

Spend the money and get a top flight coach

Is Mike Gundy a top flight coach? It's debatable, but if it were to happen, we can't say " well crap they didn't get a big time winning coach"

Not saying I support Currie or Haslam, but I can't complain if we get something we wanted

How many National Championship's or Super Bowls has he won??

People freaking out and taking whatever they can get.

It's time for UT to stop settling for lower level coaches.
