Official Jon Gruden Thread XLIV

I wish people would get the fact that he is not, NOT coming. In fact, I think that was part of the reason people were so pissed about GS. The administration and even Gruden himself have teased the fan base about Gruden being a serious candidate, and he is not. Move on!:hi:

Serious ?....then why are you in a Gruden thread at 6:50 a.m. on a Tue. morning?

Any of the cool kids left in here? Seems as though everyone wants to come in and kick us while we are down. I offer this as a ray of hope: "You never say never to nothing".

This thing with the media feels very much like last year’s election. Media elites telling Americans what they should believe. Right or wrong UT fans/alumni can decide on their own what they will spend their hard earned dollars on. Guess what? If the product on the field at Neyland continues to look like it has, consumers will vote with their dollars. I’d like to see Currie fill a newly renovated stadium with another .500 coach!

At this point I think the only ties to Gruden were some boosters calling him up telling him they were putting a plan together to make him an offer. That could be why Gruden supposedly called some coaches i.e. Tee to gauge interest of being on staff. But that plan had no legs with Currie or Haslam. Currie may have eluded to the boosters he would talk with Gruden but never did. Thats why i don't think Gruden has came out and confirmed or denied anything because he hasn't talked to anyone about the job (Currie, or UT reps)

Wouldn't it make sense for there to be a push for him now, then?

I can't see how he would view the insanity of Sunday as a bad thing- if he came now, he'd be the savior of the program. If ego is what motivates him, what better way to inflate it than by coming in to a traditional blue blood football program to resurrect it from near death?

Sent out a few emails again this morning as well as a couple of tweets. We need to put on more steam to get Currie gone. He can not be the one to make this hire.

He has been my number 2 all along after Gruden. I am hoping the disaster with schiano is going to be a blessing and get us KIFFIN.

Yea, I don't care about his buyout. Funny that his buyout for leaving is such a hot topic.

If you don't understand my thoughts by now, you won't.

Keep the full court press on Currie. We have got to do everything we can to stop his next hire before it's rammed down or throats. His removal would put his last fiasco behind us a bit and a new AD just a fresh enough start to maybe get a great hire.Any hire now by Currie will be a desperation pick. We remember the last two! FIRE CURRIE SOOON. CURRIE OFF THE HILL!

This is where i’m at. IMO, the last priority for this University is the next HFC. Heads need to roll for the events that have taken place so far. (Not holding out hope mind you)

No one in their right mind is coming here, if some change is not made, at very least Currie needs to take the fall. Currie hiring the next coach is another debacle waiting big to happen. And I fear if it happens we'll get blasted by media for a day, only to fall into the pit of misery and not seen again from another five years.

There’s no chance that Currie is capable of making a good hire on his own.

I get what you are saying my point I guess is if Currie is at the Helm no way he comes. And I don't think the university fires Currie right now. I think he gets to make a hire fast because firing him would only add more debacle in the national Spotlight and I really don't think they want that.

You are one of the most emotionally stable people I have seen on this site. (Save for that slight OCD tendency to dig down underneath a subject.)
Have a nice day.

This Gruden thing was so much more than just about Gruden, for me.

Hiring Kiffin is a major fail.

We are already in failure territory. We now wait to see what level of failure we end up with.

I never would have put Kiffin anywhere on my list when this search started. But, he might very well be the best option now.

I would just want the contract to be in UT's favor this time. He would need to do that to show his long-term commitment to the job.

I would hope that what the national media- as in, folks with microphones who have proven to be nothing but jackasses- says is irrelevant.

The PR disaster has gotten worse because our incompetent AD and Chancellor have done nothing but release pathetic twitter statements about this debacle. Letting them go is like throwing a stick into an inferno; it may spark up a bit, but in the end it doesn't matter.

I'd rather use this momentum to clean house at the University (academically AND athletically) and get the right hires in place. I think going after a Gruden or a Petersen with serious cash should be the top option now.

But you're right, with our current leadership, it won't happen.

I’m not a lawyer, but I would think the issue the lawyers and debating is whether Currie, and whoever else signed that MOU, have the implied authority to make the hire. If so, then it is an agreement. Whether or not a MOU is enforceable in court is not something I am aware of. To my limited knowledge, I don’t think a coaching MOU has ever been challenged in court since we are the only school dumb enough to jack it up this bad.

What I don’t understand is why it matters from our perspective. I get why it matters legally due to a buyout. Bev knew what he was up to. If she didn’t, then she is a negligent manager and that is equally culpable. He took the plane, went up to Ohio after two weeks of a supposed search where she received updates, thought he signed a coach. They all knew or should have known. Fire them all.

Thanks. But this feels like my parent's divorce. I want some grown ups to stand up and make good choices that make everything better. They have the strength, money, and ability. They just need to take the steps.

I liked Lane when he came. Absolutely despised him when he left. But what I hated more than anything was how he dishonored our traditions and players and tried to make us USC of the South. If he has changed in that regard, I’m willing to give him a chance. But he needs to embrace ALL things TN and learn what being a VFL is all about. If not, he can kick rocks.

Here's the thing, if people such as boosters and what not want change and want the Haslam's out of the picture then why not leak this whole messed up situation to someone like Trey Wallace or Clay Travis or Barrett Sallee?

It would seem like that's the only real way change will happen, get the dirty laundry in the hands of someone in the media. Make it so uncomfortable for the Haslams that they have no choice but to back off

While it might cause a big black eye for the university and the program it might be the only way to being about real change.

As the Joker said you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs
