Official Jon Gruden Thread XIV

My opinion is we do not have a choice at this point. If the AD were fired there is no way a coach would want to take the job not knowing who he would be working for.

If any thing came out that there is truth that he was reason why it didn't happen, I could care less what he does....**** canned, shunned, and better skin out the back for Bama....I'm still not sold that is actually the case though....or that he even is apart of anything with Gruden.

Inside source @ enterprise has a pickup outside the AirTran baggage return tomorrow morning for B Davis!

BOOM!
I'm holding out for Gruden, no turning back on that one, BUT.

For what it's worth, I think we could do a LOT worse than Butch Davis.
Reason #1) Phillip Buchannon, Vincent Wilfork, Sean Taylor, Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss, Andre Johnson, Greg Olsen, Willis MacGahee, Clinton Portis, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow II, Frank Gore, Edgerrin James, Jonathan Vilma, Ed Reed, etc. You get the picture. That's just at Miami too, not including Hakeem Nicks or Marvin Austin... ALL were his recruits.

Reason #2) before you flame me for saying the above: Butch Davis was cleared of all wrongdoing for what happened at UNC, and all this Nevin Shapiro stuff didn't happen until 2002, 2 years after his departure. He was hired at UM in '95 when they were still in deep $hizz for Dennis Erickson's tenure.

It's odds for me. Anyone that has had no doubts is not being realistic imo.

You say you moderate a poker forum. Do you not think there are big bluffs being run on the media right now? As for odds, looking at all the evidence currently on the table from the last few months till today I would say the pot odds still favor pushing your chips in on Gruden. I really see no hard evidence that says a real search is being conducted.

OldVol: If your hypothetical is perhaps the case here, then is it fair to say LaMonte's strong words were because if Tampa had some kind of proof of a deal with UT, they could void the last payment? I am reaching probably, just wondered

I cant stop thinking of some of the things that were supposedly said by LaMonte. I could comment on several things, but this one keeps eating at me....Lamonte said he only talked to Hart for the first time today. He said that Hart called him and said that he had HEARD RUMORS (that grudens was interested) and that he wanted to call to clear the air....or something along those lines. You mean to tell me that the only thing that gave Hart any clue that Gruden could be a candidate is thathe heard Rumors? I call B.S. what do you guys think?

Great point. Gruden gets his last paycheck from TB on 12/15 - the same time Hart is now expected to make an announcement.

The goal was to throw everybody off and it worked.

Wait how do you know that it's on 12/15? Not an attack just asking a question, I may have missed some info :hi:

Here's my question.

The boosters pooled money and went all in on the Gru. This money was for Gru only. If Hart failed to deliver Gru the money was to be returned. Hart would then have a budget of 2.9 to hire a coach.

Here's the question.
As of 9:15 the money has not been returned. There are currently no plans to return it. Why?

They spent it all on Powerball tickets?

Lets just put a hypothetical question out there! Lets say a man was waiting on getting his final pay check. Lets pretend that the check would come on the 1st of the month. Would it be worth it to wait for for it if said man had 1.2 million reasons to wait for it?

I'm still being told it can happen.
60% ish.

This is what I'm talking about! :good!:

Good question....Now why would they do that??????hmmm:yes:

Agents are good at lying.

That is the one thing I could never find via Googling. Fired on 12/28/08... what was the structure of the buyout? 48 months starting which month? Payments of what per month? Etc.

That would explain a lot if we actually knew how that was structured...

This was suggested above but hypothetically it might be a sports network rather than a sports franchise obliged to come up with the said hypotheical reasons x 1.2 million.

I think ESPN MNF is playing a big part in the deal getting delayed. I'm sure Gruden doesn't want to burn that bridge.

OV, I love what you bring to the board. And up to today I really believed what you've said.

But I'm having trouble with this assertion ...

there are reputable journalists saying that it is a fact he had contacted assistants about coaching at UT. They had spoken with said coaches as had their employers. To say Gruden had no interest is false in my mind because of this,

Yes. He did a lot of due diligence that is even part of the public record now, including calling coaches about the job, getting a college staff together, reviewing Tennessee team and recruiting information, etc. And consider the public reports of people that know him -- Mortensen, La Canfora, Sharpe, C Davis, et al -- who unamously said they thought he might very well end up in college, and that UTK would be that place.

If he was just listening for kicks, including to people like Manning, he had gobs of time to politely and secretively say, "Thanks guys, but it's not for me." there would've been no issue, no rumors, no nothing. The reason talks got as far as they did is because both parties were trying to reach a deal to make him the next HC. And those talks has surpasses the point of deciding if he would like to come. That bridge was crossed weeks ago. We were down to contract details I believe -- the minutiae.

The reason the TFP had staff members quoted on the record is because they had agreed to be on standby and had intimate knowledge of an actual job on the horizon. They would have had to consider their own families, terms, etc before they could hav agreed to tell him they'd come with him. Many many things had to have already been discussed to get to such a place.

This was an 11th hour ejection button job. Don't be swayed by the media who acts like Hart tried to get in touch with him or nonsense like that.

if the timeline was dec 15th, that would explain a lot

1) they probably didnt think it'd leak this early, hence the ridiculous statements from everyone involved - deny, and deny 110%. They don't have to kill it just a day or two, but rather a week or two. Smells like Saban's situation.

2) It wouldn't surprise me if Grude's contract was backloaded. I have no industry insight here - but I can see there being a big sum of his buyout being on the backend instead of equal installments... OR those equal installments being spread out on an annual/quarterly basis vs. a monthly basis like Dooltabbys

3) It would explain Hart's super slow pacing on this search. If he knew his 99% gruden wasn't done until december 15th.... why get the rumors associated with travel/interviews starting right out the gate? Makes sense that he planned to 'be in the office all week' last week.

Interesting point. I am trying to make myself buy in to believing it, hypothetically, but one question jumps to the front of my cerebellum.

If hypothetically, said man is waiting until the 1st on this check, why send his agent out to crap all over a very lucrative deal that might be in the works when that check stops?

Hypothetically, are you saying these 1.2 million reasons come from a television network or from a sports franchise?

Well hypothetically speaking of course, if perhaps publicly accepting another position could possibly void the last payment structure. Hypothetically speaking.
