Official Jon Gruden Thread III

Wow?? Please give us one reason DD would negotiate any reduction in his buyout?

Because he breeched his contract last year by contacting UNC about their coaching vacancy. This happened in conjunction with him seeking his buyout after the UK game.

Ainge's perspective always makes me feel better in the morning. He just said:

"I remember when I was at NYJ, Gruden came in the locker room and could've cared less about the Jets...all he wanted to talk about was Tennessee football. Who they played next, talk about the game before, or a play I had been a part of. Gruden is a huge fan of Tennessee, he's a true fan. If Jon Gruden is to take a coaching job, I firmly believe it will w at Tennessee. The question is, will he take the job?"

He also went on to say, "this isn't the first time. People don't know that we were looking down a gun barrel at Jon Gruden as our coach the year we hired Lane Kiffin. We had him, he wanted to come here and Hamilton couldn't get it worked out for whatever reason. He wants to coach here. He loves UT...he is a true fan. But he has a good gig right now, so we'll see."

Wow?? Please give us one reason DD would negotiate any reduction in his buyout?

1. So he can resign and not be fired.
2. So he can leave now and not have to go through the indignity of being a lame duck coach for the rest of the season.
3. To avoid any potential long, protracted litigation over his alleged breaches of contract (such as contact with UNC concerning their opening two years ago, etc.).

If Dooley wanted out last year like it has been reported there is no saving his job and that is the way it should be.

Because I am using COMMON SENSE something this thread is lacking.

I will go back to blindly believing this rumor because I don't want to dampen the party.
I beg to differ. You are doing nothing but speculating. Plenty of Fulmerites swore up and down, just like you that there was NO way possible Fulmer was going to be fired before the end of the season.

Just as the die was cast leading up to the SC game, it could very well be the case with Dooley. What you are forgetting is that Dooley NEVER, EVER had the credentials to be a HC at a program like UT...Hart likely knows this, and thus has far less patience with him than he would a coach who came into the job with an impressive resume.

You also have another dynamic involved....timing. We are going to be competing head to head with other SEC teams before the end of the season. Arkansas has been trying to lure Gruden, and will be considering the same coaches we're interested in.

If they have a coach lined up who is not currently coaching elsewhere he will be gone in short order. If an interimn is named the incoming coach could start contacting recruits ala Meyer at OSU.

Agreed except he coaches the remainder of the year after being announced he is done. Same as Fulmer IMO. New coach could start recruiting but it won't happen until after regular season is over

This
DH: "I've never put any stock in that. I've been a part of teams who have been forecasted to be all-world and became mediocre. I have been a part of teams who were forecasted to be mediocre who finished in the top 10. I have never paid any attention to that and the reason I haven't is that on the inside, which I am seeing it every day, knowing the level of the challenge that Derek inherited. I
don't think people fully appreciate the many aspects of that challenge and I see progress. That's what I look for are we making progress or not, and we are making progress. And behind the scenes we are making a lot of progress. I really like the staff. We lost some good coaches, but this staff is an aggressive, mature staff. We have ratcheted up significantly the level of intensity. I worked with Sal (Sunseri) for three years. I know Sal. I was really happy when Derek moved in that direction because I knew the energy that Sal would bring and the expertise. And Sal knows what good looks like by the way from many places where he has been. So his expectations and his standards are going to be pretty
high. I think the players have responded pretty well to that. I like the staff's experience. I just think that you have to surround yourself with really high quality people in anything you do to be successful and I think this staff is very, very good and I'm excited about that. I'm excited about the fall and the
potential of what could happen with this football team."

....Sunday or Monday after the MSU game.

Boro, did you see this quote by Hymns

“I do believe that Jon Gruden has talked to some coaches in an effort to put together his staff. The question is: is he doing that for the collegiate level or the NFL level? But I do believe that he has talked to some coaches with the intent to put together a staff to get back into coaching, in spite what he is making at Monday Night Football.”

I believe 100% CDD has been told that he is not returning

My question is if that is the case why wait until after this game to announce it?

He probably's been told that what he's done this season isn't cutting it and he's on his last thread.

Just can't see a AD telling a Coach he is canned but then says, but don't say anything to the media and go out and act like everything is fine and coach while I work on your replacement.

Do people not realize how dumb that sounds?

....Sunday or Monday after the MSU game.

I have said this before but based on his eagerness to put his body in harms way by getting back on the sidelines against Bama I believe this isn't true. He may have been told after the Bama game but him risking his own health to be on the sidelines would not have happened if he knew he was canned.

He can't conatact recruits if the staff is full. OSU was short a coach and thats the reason Urb was allowed to do so. Thus interimn named, Dooley gone, position open.

Last night I talked to a former all american offensive lineman who does some radio work in Knoxville. He is saying that a Gruden hire is just a rumor, same as four years ago. The only reason there is more conversation about it today is because more people want Dooley gone than wanted Fulmer gone 4 years ago.

Another guy I know in Memphis who is heavy into fundraising for UT in that city also agrees with that assessment.

I think all we know for sure is that Gruden would be interested in taking a look at UT. But then again he's dropped that line about so many other jobs in the past that you'll have to decide how much stock to invest in that.

As far as what Ainge says, I lost a lot of respect for him after the garbage he said on the air prior to the Bama game. He's a drug addict and I think he'll say anything to be considered relevant and get in on this action.

I would almost certainly think that if UT is firing Dooley that they would not just target ONE person as his replacement. This is another reason I put little stock in this whole Gruden thing. I think if Dooley was being fired there would be smoke coming from other camps as well, not just the Gruden camp.

If Dooley gets fired, and that's a big if because it could cost the university between 6 and 9 million dollars to get rid of him and his staff, the most likely scenario is that it would not be announced until the end of the season. If it were announced after the USC game, I would fully expect him to be allowed to finish out the season and if that happens there is almost no chance of UT announcing his replacement prior to Dooley's exit (meaning the end of the season).

I think that's the most rational way to look at this now.

Please?? Even if true UT would have had to act then not two years or even a year later.

Ericvol was no Fulmerite - he predicted Fulmer's firing long before it happened. Come on guys admit it - the timing of this doesn't make sense. Hart would not have given CDD the chance to win this saturday if he had already informed CDD of the decision. CDD will likely be fired, and maybe Gruden will be the next coach but it is extremly premature to be celebrating or acting like it's a done deal.

If it was already decided they would have announced it Monday.

I'm sorry that your all's dream isn't true. But it isn't.

Now we will likely lose Saturday and then I do believe that this all could go down.

But to believe there is no way Dooley could save his job would be foolish. Even if Gruden wants to come.

Gruden wouldn't do that to Dooley.

I too am a Dooley fan. But I watched the Alabama game and came to the same conclusion that Hart reportedly came to, that we are still where we were three years ago. I believe he's been told that they're letting him go and a coaching search is on with Gruden the target. If they wait until the end of the year to start a coaching search, they will not get an upgrade. I also believe the solid posters on here that are being told that Gruden has come to some sort of agreement with the Vols. These guys don't make stuff up. JMO
