First, Gruden couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. Secondly, he is gutless and couldn't handle the job. Thirdly, for all you Gruden fans get over it, he's not coming. Period. I have a personal therapist that could help you folks to accept reality.

First post of the day..a big fat.....

I'm curious how any of you would have answered Golic this morning, if you were Jon and had no intention whatsoever to coach at TENNESSEE.

I would have just said "I'm flattered and honored they want me there, but I am just not at the place in my life where that's what I want to do."

To understand Gruden's interview this morning, you have to construct it from his perspective.

1. He can't announce anything this morning by telephone on a TV/radio program. That event can only happen on the UT campus in a press conference together with John Currie. So...he can't tell the truth about going to Tennessee.

2. He can't avoid the question. Mike and Mike would be flamed terribly as investigative journalists (which is a big part of who they are) if they didn't ask the question. They clearly HAVE to ask the question. Gruden acknowledges that requirement.

3. He can't outright lie. So as he avoids telling the truth, he has to be creative with his wording.

4. Saying things like "I haven't talked with anyone" can work, if put in the right place. Like, right after the question is asked. Because then, it can be construed as, "I haven't talked with anyone in the media prior to you, you're the first to ask me this." Which, afaik, is true. So he's being honest all while not going to the place he can't yet go.

5. He needs to be positive about ESPN, MNF, and his co-workers. They depend on him still, and he can't sell them short. So he is sure to put in some very positive plugs on their behalf.

6. He's a former coach, a future coach, and a friend to coaches. He's not going to hurt Brady Hoke, the other assistant coaches, or for that matter Butch Jones if he can help it. Speculating on HIS future role at Tennessee hurts them as they continue to try to find new jobs, or maybe hold out hope to stay on with the Vols.

...

Point is, once you start looking at this morning's Q&A from JG's perspective, preparing in advance for the question so to speak, the walls around what he can and can't say start to become obvious. And you get him having to say certain things, in certain ways, to avoid hurting people or breaking a commitment.

I think he did the job masterfully, whether he has already agreed to be the Vols' next coach or not.

Good lord.. You sure took the long way around the barn just to say Gruden didn't say no...

False. Currie actually wanted Gruden to replace Fulmer.

In fact, one reason they let Fulmer go when they did (mistake) was that Currie convinced Hamilton that they could get Gruden. Then Hamilton developed a man-crush on Kiffin and hired him.

I can not believe i have not seen anyone who broke down mike & mike interview mention his comment, “All I really have in my life is my family and football, that’s it.” Have both in East Tennessee...

I am getting the sense that this is almost done. But hang tight, I am sure we will have a midday swoon. Don't go near the cliffs and be patient.

Said one source: "Jon is definitely interested. Reporters saying he isn't don't know what they're talking about. They haven't talked to anybody who knows anything within the program or Jon. It's ridiculous to think UT isn't a player for a top-notch coach & its lazy reporting"

Good perspective, however anybody means ANYBODY. He could have worded it differently or left that part out.

No way does hargis write that if the ink isn't dry.

I agree. I have said all a long that I thought Gruden was a long shot and he would have to be insane to take the job but Hargis today and Brice yesterday gives the Grumors real credibility. Both of them are conservative and true journalists.
