Official Ben Howland Thread

Turner Haddock ‏@Turner_Haddock 1h BREAKING: (sources) UT AD Dave Hart finalizing deal with former UCLA head basketball coach Ben Howland to become Vols new head coach.

Oh my gracious dear!

But I had to edit this to ask, who the hell is Turner Haddock?

A guy that has his finger on the pulse of UT basketball that is who he is!!!......yeah....I have no idea.

He cut a player at the last minute, so all the high school and aau coaches cut him off from their players. Started losing lots of games soon after if I remember correctly.

so basically this guy has a bad name in recruiting circles, why would we want someone who may not be able to recruit?

I saw one ucla fan laughing at the thought of us being bored by CCM's style, but wanting howland. He called his style solid, but painfully boring. Not endorsing this, just tifwiw

Interesting if true. Post that over in the recruiting forum and they will tell you kids need to stop crying and suck it up. Recruiting is cut throat. As long as the kid has 15-20 minutes to find another school, he should have nothing to complain about. :p

Then there was the SI, Ben Howland has lost control of the program and Reeves Nelson is intentionally injuring people in practice and peeing on their stuff in the locker room, with Howland completely ignoring the situation article.

Followed by Howland recruiting Shabazz Muhamad, who the NCAA pretty much told everyone to stay away from. Incidentally, Muhammad's dad just got sentenced to a few years in jail for fraud, some of which stemmed from Muhammad's recruitment, and loans taken out against Muhammad's future earnings, which is a big NCAA no-no.

this just gets better and better , so why do so many want him to be our coach? That doesn't sound like someone Hart would consider hiring

We don't really believe this random guys tweets do we? I can't imagine their is any credibility to this.

why exactly did Howland lose his job at UCLA?

Lost control of the program.. Took some late risks in recruiting.. Such as Shabazz Muhammad (rumors of payment) All the other big schools backed off and he took him

Honestly, hiring Howland would be similar to the Bruce Pearl hiring.

Basically you're getting a good basketball coach, with a good resume, on the cheap because of some off the court and NCAA question marks. The Pearl gamble looked great until the off the court and NCAA question marks caught up with Pearl. If Howland has the off the court and NCAA stuff straightened out, he will be a steal. However, expect the NCAA to be firmly up his rear end. He got out of town before the posse caught up to him the first time, and the NCAA doesn't like that sort of thing. Ask Kelvin Sampson...or Bruce Pearl.

Obviously because it would cost UT more to hire him. He MUST be better if he demands a bigger salary. I think I am figuring this thing out. As soon as news breaks that Mack would take the job at 3.85 mil a year, he will then be the #1 candidate on the board. Well, until Tyndall's agent reports he would consider it at 4 million per.

The Case for Howland:

Ben Howland guided UCLA to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in 10 seasons, compiling a 233-107 record (.685) as the Bruins' head coach. He led UCLA to three consecutive Final Fours (2006-08), four Pac-12 regular-season titles (2006-08, 2013) and two Pac-12 Tournament championships (2006, 2008).

Howland became the program's first head coach since the late John Wooden to win three consecutive conference championships (2006-08) and is UCLA's only head coach other than Wooden to have led the Bruins to three straight NCAA Final Four appearances.

Through 19 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Howland has logged a 401-206 overall record (.661). Between five seasons at Northern Arizona (1995-99), four years at Pittsburgh (2000-03) and 10 seasons at UCLA (2004-13), Howland has led his teams to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. Additionally, he has guided his teams to the "Sweet 16" five times, including three straight trips with the Bruins from 2006-08.

In 10 seasons at UCLA (2004-13), Howland led UCLA to more overall victories (233) and a higher winning percentage (.685) than any other Pac-12 program over that 10-year span.
