Not happy with DeBord.

They didn't stretch the field vertically. IMO, that's what allowed OU to play everyone so close to the LOS and stop the short passing and run game.

Even if you don't hit it, you have to crank one down field every once in awhile. Make sure the QB throws the ball away from trouble. An incompletion is still a good play.

That's 1 area where we should have seen more aggressive playcalling. To begin the second half, our rushing attack clicked. We followed that with a quick pass to Malone. Both plays had nice gains. Then, the drive stalled with uncharacteristic mistakes. Afterwards, play became tighter and their defense was disruptive due to busts in our o line.

So, it's a good point. We should have loosened up the defense with some safe attempts downfield. Question though, do you trust those plays with our oline play as the game progressed?

The disappointing thing about the Oklahoma second half we knew early on that they were selling out on defense. A good coordinator would have had an answer for that and made them pay. Debord acted like he had never seen a sellout and had no clue how to attack it. Any OC with years of experience would have had a field day.

It doesn't take a John gruden to see what the issue was against OU.

Who said anything about being a John Gruden, dude? I was just reminding him of a little factor called being blitzed the entire second half. I wonder how DeBord appeared so clueless. He didn't seem to see the issue you're posting about. Maybe you ought to fax him your number so he can consult with the expert...

Calm down never said I was the expert. I just said it's obvious and what was obvious is we had alot of inaccurate throws and dropped passes.

Yes because I wouldn't have called a long developing play action pass. Just something real similar to what BGSU hit UT with. It was a long sideline route but the ball was out of the QB's hand long before the pass rush got close.

If going to the middle, run the slot up one hash and the TE or another up the other. One breaks it off on a post, the other pushes deep. The S can only commit help to one or the other... meaning you have a 50/50 ball with the other guy and probably vs a S, NB, or LB.

There are innumerable ways to do it... and safely.

A true screen game ( with a RB flaring out and 2-3 blockers instead of this bubble screen crap that has been around since before Sanders) and a few slants to the spots where the LB's were blitzing from could have done wonders on Okies pass rush and run blitzes IMO.

Exactly. That is the way we were coached to attack a blitz like OU was throwing at us. Well said, man.

Either they had no answer with Dobbs at QB or Jones didn't allow it.

I doubt very seriously that DeBord doesn't know how to play call against a blitz.

They tried on several occasions. But OU was playing everyone so close to the LOS that Dobbs had to drill it into the ground.

That's another occasion though where Dobbs seems to get in too much of a hurry. He doesn't suck the D in enough before turning to throw. He doesn't sell it very well.

I think I'd give him a run option of every screen pass. Just an escape lane...

Bottom line is that this offense is obsolete, period.

Its obvious to me now that Debord doesn't know what the hell he's doing. When Butch said he was "tweaking" the offense I was hopeful that we'd see
Dobbs under center this year, but alas.... Our running game is never going to be effective against SEC defenses. Out of the gun you're limited to 3 plays,
your vision is limited, and you're mainly running east west instead of downhill. You also have no play action which is crucial to NFL offenses and the stats
show that QBs are much more efficient when under center than they are out of the gun. I mean this stuff is so basic its maddening!

Oh yeah, throw the fact that we have no ability or willingness to stretch the field, we refuse to use the middle of the field and allow DBs to sit on
predictable short routes and its a recipe for disaster. I hate this offense.

Actually, the more I've thought about it, I don't think Dobbs is "ideal" like many here seem to think. He can run. But historically, Jones hasn't asked his QB's to run as much as Dobbs has. He HAS asked them to manage the O and distribute the ball. Dobbs isn't doing that.

Dormady otoh is VERY similar to guys who have had the most success in Jones' system. Mobile enough. Accurate passer. Good decision maker. Good manager of the O. Good distributor of the ball.

Dormady made two throws on Saturday that Dobbs has not proven he can make or may even be unwilling to try or unable to "see". Whereas Dobbs has missed several open receivers on scramble plays this year. QD nailed one on that TD pass. Dobbs struggles to accurately lead WR's. QD placed the ball perfectly to PW... only Williams had a play on that ball. Even on Dobbs' TD pass early in the game, a better DB would have made a play on the ball.

I like Dobbs. I always have. IMO, all of the physical skills are there. But there seems to be some "instinct" as a passer that he lacks. He doesn't seem to anticipate so he often doesn't know where to look for the open guy or know how to throw to a spot where only the UT player can make a play.

I can't remember if it was an interview or just an observation of Larry Bird but it was said that he didn't have to look to pass because he always knew where everyone on the court had to be based on what he was looking at. Great QB's have a "sense" of where everyone is and where they will be. Dobbs doesn't seem to be able to do that.

This reminds me of the QB situation between Peyton Manning and Todd Helton. Todd was a much better athlete but, Manning could manage the game and make all the throws. Helton "got hurt" and Manning took over. The rest is history.

You didn't miss it because we have yet to really show it. There were a few passes downfield against WCU and if I recall correctly we had a couple against OU that were moderately successful but we quickly abandon it almost entirely for the run/screen game, which proves to be unhealthy for offensive production because it's all we offer and they can key on it and stop it effectively. We may not be able to go downfield in the passing game, but we have got to make them stop keying on the run game.

People also overlook the fact that just because the ball was not thrown down field does not necessarily fall on playcalling. If the qb does not throw to guys on downfeild routes or those routes are not allowed to develop well... I mean seriously guys it's not like Dobbs has 4-5 or even 3-4 seconds back there. A guy that's not as good throwing downfeild needs more time. Add to that his first instinct is to tuck and run. Until oline improve in pass pro, expecting downfeild passes is ridiculous.

With this line it is really hard to tell is with Dobbs the wide outs or the online. But trust me it some combination of those 3 things not coaching. Our coaches would be complete idiots to try regularly throwing the ball downfeild until that sI tuition is adressed. That's what damn near got Worley killed behind that line last year.

Everytime I have seen a play called with guys specifically going downfeild one of 3 things happens. Dobbs runs for his life and throws it away. He runs for his life and is sacked or the ball is dropped/picked.

You could throw Colquitt and Stewart in there too. All were much better athletes than Manning. At that point in his career, Colquitt had a stronger arm.

The bolded isn't true. And MOST QB's are expected to deliver in less than 3 seconds. I can't remember what Cut had Ainge doing but it was well under 3 seconds.

You make your pre-reads... Dobbs is more than smart enough to do that. You make your post reads right after the snap of the ball... and then you throw to a spot. This is pretty much what BGSU's QB did repeatedly. He read his keys and threw to the best match up. He got the ball out very quickly... probably avg'd under 2 seconds on those 9 routes.

This OL is giving Dobbs more time than the OL gave Bray when he first became the starter as a Fr. Chaney had him making the reads and throwing the ball.

Dobbs does give up on pass plays too soon. Maybe he's still gun shy from last year but he's left stable pockets multiple times this year.

With all the talent we have on offense, why is DeBord not taking full advantage? I get so tired of seeing us being overly conservative on Offense. I'm not here calling for his job or anything, but when will we open it up more? We should have beat OU, but defense slacked off and our offense seemed to be content being conservative and not putting more pressure on the downfield passing game. Hurd and Kamara are capable of keeping drives going, but why not use Dobbs the way we did at the end of last season? I'm just not too happy with our production. Thoughts?

The OL play and the lack of throwing the ball downfield is the reason of being conservative on offense, try to hide the fact that Dobbs cant throw the ball deep, all the other teams defense has to play us is 25 yards in and that cuts the playbook down big time, Dobbs just cant throw the ball down field, and Debord is trying to hide the fact that he cant, hope he proves me wrong this Saturday, if we dont try to throw the ball down field Saturday the Gators will beat us, even if we cant hit the deep ball throw it anyway to keep the gators defense honest.:ermm:

I'm not advocating a QB change... I'm advocating that the current QB change and show some patience.... and pocket presence.

I like Dobbs... but UT MUST be able to throw down field.

Then you should immediately cut off your $$ donations to UT. That will send a loud message that YOU are not happy with the way things are being handled by Butch Jones....when your money stops that will get their attention. Exactly how much do you donate each year?? ( insert crickets chirping )

Lighten up Francis!

Right now? About $35,000 a year. Tuition is expensive.

Normally? About $2000.

Can't do much about tuition till my kid gets out of medical school. The other, I'll see if that works.

Just consider the issue and our play selections and calls in the first overtime versus how we managed play calls in the 4th quarter. I have no problem with how the game was called through 3 quarters of football. Our staff entering the 4th quarter based on their momentum and having shut us down offensively in the second half, in hindsight, should have called offensively a more aggressive game to end it at least with one more score. IMO they played the game too safe offensively and laid the game on the back of the defense. It didn't work. My point is we magically I guess the way some see it found a way against the same defense to score a TD in the first OT. I believe it was due to our play selection and execution and had we the same sense of urgency in the 4th quarter we would have prevailed there and then.

I understand. This is an expanded version of what you posted earlier. I know you wanted more aggressive playcalling. Im asking you HOW or WHAT play(s) you were wanting to see. Kinda like what sjt posted.

We don't "pass pro" and why throw to the middle of the field when this offense has absolutely lit up the scoreboard against our sec rivals? This offense is only good against weaker teams that we should dominate. That is the only thing cbj has proven on offense. I am Not calling for him to be fired but his offense is consistently pathetic vs quality teams.

When the play by play was evaluated, it was noted that OU got pressure with only 3,4,5 and a few times 6 pass rushers. That means your stretching the field against a combo of 5-8 DBs and LBs. And, does Dobbs "stare down" receivers or is he good at "looking off" defenders? Still wanna call that play?

Agreed. Dobbs CAN do it. Question is, WILL he do it during crunch time?

When are we gonna see this playbook? Its the same game after game, year after year. The gators defense only has to cover half the field because of our offensive scheme. It has been this way since the beginning and cbj hasn't adapted as of yet. That is the cause of concern for some posters

They don't stretch the field vertically. Cover the rb going horizontally to the sideline, the te going to the other sideline, the wr that runs a 10 yard hook, the 2 wr that always run deep on a fly route without anyone in the middle. This makes our offense easy to defend. I respect your posts but to blame the players for going on 3 seasons is just wrong. I say 3 seasons because its the same thing, year after year. He made a NFL line look extremely inept and the whole time he said they weren't physical enough, we need better talent and we will continue to improve. We haven't. Our defense has improved immensely and it is the only side of the ball without his handprint on it.
