Not Going to Have "Thugs"? Wha?

What a dumb debate. The coach clearly, clearly was referring to kids who, through their on or off-the-court actions, bring shame upon the school and the program. No color was specified, obviously, and he didn't need to. Thugs come in all colors, shapes, and sizes and he isn't going to have any of those in our program. That's what he's saying. I can't believe people are really getting butthurt over this.

It's a legitimate debate. It was HUGE issue not even three months ago. I have a link to Richard Sherman talking about it.

I think it's a fair discussion. If you'd not like to join it, that's fine, but I think it's interesting. I'm interested in other opinions.

Just because Richard Sherman talks about something does not make it a big issue. The guy does a lot of talking. If he talked about jumping off a bridge, would you jump, too?

This thread is a direct reflection on how far we as a society have come regarding political correctness and overanalyzation of usage/context in regards to a select handful of man made terms. Over the course of our history, words have evolved along with their meanings. As a society, we've done that to ourselves to either fill our agendas, mask an underlying opinion, or ignore/discredit a terms purpose.

Perfect topic for debate for those that have very little to do of any importance other than read their own posts. Yall have fun.

Bad social engineering . Obviously the thread piqued your interest, you used your valuable time to respond.

A thug can be white or black, a thug to me is that someone that is no good not because of his hair tattoos or the color of his skin you got a lot of thugs of all color.:ermm:

But, I heard it, and I thought, "oh boy."

Just wanted y'all's opinion on it.

As much as I believe the word "thug" has nothing really to do with race, I have to admit I also cringed when I read the transcript of his press conference.

That's the sad part -- that we all know Coach Tyndall didn't intend to say anything offensive (especially since it's going to be his job to entice young people to play basketball at UT, and the vast majority of them will be African Americans), yet we instinctively knew that when he said the word it could be criticized in that way.

I hate that. Everybody takes offense to everything nowadays -- people need to chill out.

I'd be lying if I said his use of the word "thug" didn't stand out to me. I mean, the word is often used by people who ARE racist to describe black people, so I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it may have rubbed some of the players the wrong way. It just has that connotation. Not endorsing this thread, just throwing in my 2 cents.

My opinion will not be popular on this subject. Thug is not the new n word to me. Thugs come in all colors shapes and sizes.

Thug is another way of saying a person is up too NO GOOD...NO MATTER THE COLOR OF THE PERSON IS.......it has nothing to do with race.....

This is the exact same argument that people use to defend dropping n-bombs.

I'm not saying you're a racist if you use the term. I don't think Tyndall meant anything by it. But I guarantee you a PR person will be discussing this with him if they haven't already, and if you're still throwing this term around you should consider modernizing your vocabulary. It isn't 1972 anymore.

amazing that black folks can call each other n***er every day but a coach says thug about the type of attitude and behavior of a player and it's talked about for days.

What. A. Joke.

The next time I am referred to as a "cracker" I am calling a lawyer.

When was the last time you were called that? When was the last time you even thought about your race? When was the last time somebody crossed the road when you walked by? etc.

White people in America don't have to think about it. Have you ever travelled to a country where you weren't the dominate color?

Agreed,
Thank you Jesse and Al. Two of the most corrupt men ever. They sold out their race for their personal agenda.

There's a bunch of them south of us that millions of Americans go to vacation every year.

I'm not sure why this is a difficult concept: 1) People of all types appropriate the words that are used to hurt them as their own. It lessons the damage. the B-word; the F-word for homosexuals; etc. and etc. This is common.

Even "rednecks" do it. Listen to every stupid as pop country Nashville song. It's all about being "hillbillys" and "rednecks" and such. They call each other this all the time, but if some Yankee calls 'em that, well, he'd likely spit some Beech Nut in that Dude's eye because . . .

Well, if you country you know the rest.

See what I mean?

Here's a good essay on the topic if anyone's interested:

I dunno: My momma taught be to be polite, so I try to be. I'm sure UT's PR guys were all over it, and I'm sure Tyndall didn't mean anything by it.

BTW: Did Cuonzo ever say the word in public? Just curious. Did he ever say: "I won't tolerate thugs"?

The issue came and went.

However Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines thug as "a violent criminal"....

:a brutal ruffian or assassin: gangster, tough

gangster is defined as "a member of a group of violent criminals" : a member of a gang of criminals : racketeer...

Example from Merriam-Webster dict:

"the Mob boss regularly sent his thugs after people who were slow to pay their debts".

Origin of "Thug":

Hindi & Urdu ṭhag, literally, thief
First Known Use: 1810

No where does it reference a thug as someone who is black.

The AD can't fix the division, but a head coach in a sport dominated by African Americans should probably choose his words a little more carefully.

Exactly. The point isn't whether it's right that "thug" has become a racially loaded word; it's that someone in Tyndall's job ought to know that, fairly or not, it's become a word that you probably shouldn't use during your prepared remarks at your introductory press conference. How hard would it have been to just say "troublemakers" instead?
