No more this about Barnes:

Doug didn’t have a clue how much Tennessee fans cared about basketball. Odd that TBA got built under his tenure. Despite its size, it was a sterile cave originally. I certainly wouldn’t have fired Devoe to hire Houston. If you look at the potential hires UT had as head coach over the years, it’s a pretty amazing group of coaches. How we wound up with Houston, O’Neil, Green and Buzz is a head scratcher.

Yes, Barnes is the best. Pearl would have done amazing things, but that’s another story.
Without hindsight it's hard to tell who is going to be Kirby Smart and who is going to be, well, Wade Houston...he was universally praised as Crum's right hand man and he came with a son that was the bluest of blue chips. It does take a special kind of incompetence to go 3-15 and 9-22 in the regular season with Houston on the roster.

Get ready to laugh, guys, but I still believe character matters. I believe my Alma Mater is judged partially by what represents it on a field of play and the coaches that are there.
There is no doubt in my mind that CRB is the best coach that UT has had in my 75 years but, outside of possibly Coach Neyland, the best person we have had to represent UT. To me that counts even more than the records. And that reflects directly on all of us as fans and vice versa. Yeah, he deserves a statue.
Pat Summitt and it’s not close. The only reason I have one iota of interest in women’s bball is Pat Summitt. Barnes is a high character guy, but this is game of legacy, and legacy is made off of championships. That’s a harsh way to judge but it’s a fact. I can’t stand Fulmer, but I’d rank him above Majors just based on that fact alone. Vitello is similar to Pat in that he brought more attention to Tennessee than his position indicated. I think Barnes is as much in debt to Tennessee for his success as we are to him. Summitt started with nothing. Tony, with nothing. Tennessee, as mentioned by many pundits, was a sleeping giant in basketball. Pearl unlocked that and UT fans wanted more. Barnes, by his own admission was shocked by how much Tennesseee cared about bball. Resources and a fan base that will support you like a blueblood. UT is 3rd in national attendance behind only UK and UNC. Barnes has a chance to cement his legacy in that group, but that’s only going to happen with a F4.

Neyland, Summitt, Vitello, Barnes

Nice revisionist history there. And coming from a fan page stalker. True colors at a BBQ?? Listen to yourself, LOL. Your disdain for me has you delusional now. Pearl wasn’t a choir boy. Neither was Barnes earlier in his career. In fact, he was a first class jerk and foul mouthed a-hole. This is a guy who’s talked openly about calling former players to apologize for his behavior. So, don’t come in here acting like you have any position to make moral judgements about Pearl. Pearl was one of the most engaging and loved coaches.

He did amazing things with this program and would have continued. Two final four appearances at Auburn, which is a much more difficult job, btw.

Could you imagine Pearl getting fired today for a bbq?? The headspace some of you guys live in is simply amazing.

Barnes, your hero, is still a guy that leveraged the UCLA job against UT and said out loud that if it wasn’t for the buyout, he’d have left. Yes, he’s achieved unprecedented success, but he isn’t without his flaws.

Pearl was fired for a BBQ? Never mind that he lied about it to the NCAA, attempted to get the Craft family to also lie about the recruiting violations, and was also lying to his bosses at UT about players failing drug tests and other things.
This: people act like it was just about the BBQ when the reality is that it was about the lying and the attempted cover-up. If Bruce would've simply been honest and reported the BBQ, we would've gotten a slap on the wrist and he'd have still been coaching here.

I said "after" the BBQ. The fact is, Pearl didn't get fired for the BBQ. He got fired for his behavior and actions afterward. He was directed by the UT administration to do and not do certain things and he did the exact opposite then openly lied about it to the UT Administration and the NCAA. If he would have done what he was told, he could have retired here, but he's too much of a self serving sleazebag. In addition, he threw his UT assistants under the bus.

Again, he wasn't fired for the BBQ. As usual, you don't know what you're talking about. 🤡

Apparently we would have had Steven now - sorta glad he lied!

Dickey had very little to do with the construction of the Thompson-Boling Arena. Bob Woodruff built it. Dickey was there as AD only for the final phase (1/1/1986 until it opened in the fall of 1987.

Woodruff was running the athletics department when the initial concepts were conceived while Ray Mears was the coach. Woodruff was in charge when the funding was secured from the state of TN, Knox County (through the nearly 20% hotel/entertainment tax), the millions donated by the B Ray Thompson family, and the “lifetime” seat licenses that were sold to the basketball fans. It was still Woodruff and DeVoe when the final plans were made and ground was broken. I think that the replacement of the general contractor also fell under Woodruff’s watch.

BTW, the entertainment tax pretty much ended major musical acts from including Knoxville dates on their tours.

You do realize Pearl from all reports also leveraged jobs against Tennessee? Memphis for sure he flirted with and it was reported at the time the Arizona job. The difference being Barnes was just straight out honest about it and apparently that's worse to some people than doing it underhandedly while publically acting like there's no place else in the world he'd want to be.

So which is worse, saying to your face that he would have taken another job, or acting like "perish the thought!" and doing it behind the scenes?

People are more comfortable being lied to than they are with other folks being upfront and honest

Am I remembering right that they had early on talked about doming Neyland Stadium for basketball somehow?

Yes. While Neyland wasn’t a completed bowl the idea was to have the seating in the north end zone be able to be moved to the south end with the court placed in the south end zone. I would imagine the roof was what was prohibitive. That idea was floated while Mears was still the coach.

So? I didn’t bring up the moral equivalence. I’m just responding to it. We are very lucky to have Barnes. We were also wrong to fire Pearl. Those two things are completely seperate. Why some feel the need to attempt to revise history is beyond me. I garauntee you they were thrilled with Pearl at the time.

We weren't wrong to fire Pearl. He literally did the opposite of what he was told to do by his bosses after the BBQ and then lied to them about it. If he would have done what he was told to do, he would have been retained and possibly retired here. Please explain your reasoning why we should have kept him after that. There's no revisionist history here. It's the facts

He was also going to be labeled a repeat offender for the BBQ incident (committed a similar contact violation at Milwaukee). That matters because what was a minor offense if he owned up to it would have been upgraded to a major violation. He knew this which is why he lied about to both the NCAA and his AD, and went to great lengths to cover it up, including asking a recruit and his father to lie about.

So, in fact, calling it "just a BBQ" is actually revisionist history. It was much more complicated than that.

I lived in the Raleigh area for about 35 years and people still talk about this. Maryland lost to 27-0 NC State in the 1973 ACC Tournament final but got to go to the NCAAs (and reached the Elite Eight) because the Wolfpack was on probation for buying David Thompson. The next year, Maryland lost by a point at UCLA and two close games to NC State in the regular season, and then lost the ACCT final in double overtime to the Wolfpack, 102-100. NC State was allowed back in the tournament and ended Wooden's dynasty by beating them in the Final Four--a showdown of the two best teams money could buy. Maryland, at worst the third-best team in the country, and the best team not blatantly cheating, stayed home.

They changed the one-bid-per-conference rule because of that Maryland team. In 1976, the final game pitted two Big Ten teams. But it was still just two bids per conference, the regular-season and tournament champions or second-place team if the same team won both, until either '79 or '80.
Thanks. Your memory is very good. Just the fact that the 3rd best team in the country wasn’t in the tournament puts into perspective how difficult it was to 1) get there & 2) advance. There were very few “lay ups” in the tournament in those days.

I wouldn’t say Maryland was squeaky clean thou. Lefty Dressell, Maryland coach, could deal with the best of them.

Jerry Green and Devoe battling it out for 4th...Green took over from the 2 worst coaches that UT has had in the modern era and they came back to back. I give Green the edge because he took over a disaster and won 64% of his SEC games, higher than Barnes even I think. Devoe took over a strong program.
Kevin ONeal, for all his faults, left Green a loaded roster, better than any UT coach ever inherited. Tony Harris, Isiah Victor, CJ black, etc were all there. And he’d already lined up Vincent Yarbrough, Ron Slay for Green to sign later.

Simple. He was ambushed by the AD. Had the AD handled things the right way, it never would have happened. Also, What did Pearl do after? I heard he had an improper contact with a recruit, what they called a bump infraction. So please, tell us the egregious things Pearl did.
