No more this about Barnes:

I can't believe you hit "send" with this pile of uninformed and ignorant BS. I will address it sequentially. The AD had meetings with Pearl after the improper BBQ. The BBQ itself wasn't a major issue, BUT was Pearl's second infraction with the NCAA as a coach. The first with UT. Aaron Craft, a committed recruit, but only a junior, attended the BBQ. Because he was a junior, he wasn't allowed that sort of visit. Someone reported it to the NCAA. After the NCAA notified UT of the report and their confirmation of the event, Pearl's bosses had a meeting with him. Told him what he must do to keep his job. UT was even going to retain him if there was a show cause and suspension. He did exactly the opposite of what they told him to do and called recruits he wasn't supposed to call and even worse, contacted Aaron Craft's father and asked him to lie to the NCAA. UT officials told him to tell the truth about the BBQ. He didn't tell the truth and Craft's Dad told them the truth and also told them Pearl asked them to lie about it. Those are all reported facts. In the end with his reduced payout, he threw his assistants under the bus by cutting their buyouts.
I believe the recruits father was asked by Bruce to also lie about the BBQ and the father also told the NCAA about the request to lie.

You did bring up Barnes' talking to UCLA in a "oh yeah well he did this!" way, and I'm pointing out even the thing you are dinging Barnes for as proof that Barnes isn't a saint that Pearl also did numerous times here. So if it's a negative for Barnes, then it's a negative for Pearl.

We were not wrong to fire Pearl. If you really think that then you clearly didn't understand the situation we were in. It's quite funny you say that then accuse others of revising history.

Also amusing is you literally just talked about how things care seperate but then tell me I was thrilled with Pearl at the time. Yes....2 things can be true. I can be thrilled with what Pearl did and also say but he f'ed up and deserved to be fired. One has nothing to do with the other. I can also say yeah he was great here and did more than than any coach before him given the situation; I can also say he was and still is a scum bucket.
I’ve yet to see anything that would come close to firing a coach today. We’d laugh and Donde would tell them to get bent. You’ve got Bill Self, Will Wade, Kelvin Sampson, UNC creating a fake school, and on and on. And Pearl fibbed about a bbq and almost immediately corrected the record. Sure.

Not relevant now but still Fact - Bimbo Brandy Pearl invited the recruits to the BBQ without Bruce’s knowledge and he poorly tried to do damage control after the fact.

I heard Bruce told Craft & the other player “you can come over but we can’t let anyone know”. I don’t know what is correct but asking his asst coaches & parents to lie about something so minor was the deal killer. He’d never had a problem if he’d just said “yeah, I fed the kids a hamburger”.

The Craft family used Tennessee to motivate OSU to offer. Coaches have to be smarter than that. Pruitt got caught trying to buy Sims kid (OT) who was going to Ga all along. He told Ga everything dumbass Pruitt was doing.

And?

LMAO

Peak mental gymnastics.

I'll add to the list of "no mores" in this thread...no more discussion about who is the better coach - it's CRB hands down over CBP in all aspects of coaching.

I was all about him taking over the program to restore credibility and establish a process. Figured it’d be a five year rental. Exceeded my expectations years ago. Some posters need to give up their tired narrative.

I remember being shocked with the hire because it seemed so out of character for Tennessee at the time, we actually had hired a good coach 😆

This false dichotomy of Banes versus Pearl. There actually exist a world where you can appreciate both. Better coach or better result for UT? Those aren’t the same thing. Barnes is the most accomplished UT at UT. Pearl has accomplished more, as this is a tourney sport. I’d love to see Barnes put that debate to rest, but only a F4 does that. Pearl has two F4s, and that after a three year show cause. Re-llitigating the past isn’t going to fix it. That’s the mental gymnastics.

I liked Pearl. Actually spent a little time with him on the golf course as he was tight with a large donor who’s a longtime friend.
That said, I do not understand having his nuts in one’s mouth everyday.

Auburn has two Final Fours with him. He didn't get there with us. If you're a fan of Auburn you gotta love him though. Too many Auburn fans on this board.

I actually do appreciate what CBP did here and I was a huge fan of him and his teams. I agree most value tourney results above all else, however, I'm not myopic nor do I ignore reality. CBP endangers programs and those associated with it as history clearly shows not just the 3-year show-cause at UT but the suspension and 4-year probation for Auburn not to mention Chuck Person faced a 2-year prison sentence. And that's without going into the character development CRB achieves with his players.

We can def cheer on this team and hope they, our program and CRB gets a W tomorrow...GBO

All of these are great points. Playing Syracuse in the first round in 1977 is like playing St John’s today in the first round. There wasn’t 15 mid major bids in those days. Most of today’s mid major conferences didn’t exist.

The 1967 team lost to Dayton by 2 who went on the final game vs uCLA.

One of the great stories about the difference in the tourney then vs today is Maryland, I believe in 1973, went undefeated thru the ACC, lost in the ACC Conference tournament championship in triple overtime to NC State & DIDNT GET IN THE NCAA due to 1 team per conference.
Dayton was caught cheating and actually forfeited the loss to us.

Amen. I’ll be cheering with you. I want Barnes to stay as long as he’s got the fire to do so. It’s obvious he does not right now.

**** Auburn and **** Pearl. While I’m thankful for his accomplishments here and envious of his accomplishments at Auburn, Ive always hated them and hate him when we’ve played him. There’s no one I got more satisfaction of beating than Auburn while Pearl was there.

Barnes

Mears
Hard to name another one.

Rick Barnes needs a street named after him. Mears has a street in West Knoxville or did at one time.
