I’ll give you that he was a stronger runner. I’ve said that multiple times. But Maurer is a better passer no matter how much you don’t want to believe it.

You follow stats like they’re gospel. You’ve proven time and time again that what actually happened in the games hold no weight to what the bottom line reads. So here’s the truth. Maurer has fans. Lots of them. The reason so many people believe in him isn’t because of his stats. It’s because of the unteachable attributes he plays with. When he’s on the field it’s exciting. He has you on the edge of your seat. When you see him playing you don’t know if he’s going to throw a td, run like hell or throw an int at this point. Speaking for myself and maybe others feel the same but you never feel like a 3rd and forever is out of reach with him under center.

If Mac Jones is our QB, does Chaney and Pruitt believe in him and allow him to pass down the field more? Yes. Can he read defenses and anticipate throws? Yes. Is bammas defense that good? No. Did Tennessee run the ball well and protect the passer? Yes. Is Mac Jones really good when he has time? Absolutely. If JG hit Hyatt and Palmer deep a couple times for touchdowns how many times would Mac Jones do it?

Is that game 48-17 if you switch QB's?

Heck no. Take out that Gray fumble because it was on a third and 5 and he's not getting the ball there with Mac Jones under center.

So is it 41-17?

No way. We are scoring at least a couple more touchdowns. The game obviously gets a lot closer with the QB's switched.

Then imagine a close game and JG being a wild card with the ability to desemate his own team. Could easily throw a pick 6's or stupidly fumble at any point.

Saban would be aware of that so they probably have a much more conservative gameplan where they take more time off the clock, but are easier to stop with a more one dimensional offense. Just based off that the score is much closer.

Just imagine Dobbs or Bray out there even. It would mean we have a far far far closer game. Is Dobbs only scoring 17 against that defense? Or any decent QB? Almost any QB is better than JG so its a given you're not running the ball on third and 5. So it's no worse than 41-17 with anybody else. But most anyone else would put more points up for us.

Now if its a closer game that means their offense stays in gear and continues to score, but if UGA isn't stopping them then probably nobody else is.

We may not be a QB away from beating Bama and the elites, but we are good QB play away from being top 15 right now. Just like we were going into halftime at UGA when JG wasn't making huge mistakes and played decent.

You forgot to add, our defense would be one or two touchdowns a game better because we could actually sustain drives and the other team would possess it less and our d wouldn’t be beat up and tired from being on the field all day.

Agree with this post. Some have elevated Maurer to Brady and Manning status simply by being "exciting". He has shown flashes of promise but his "exciting" play has also put him one concussion away from eating jello down at the home when he's 40. He hasn't been able to stay healthy and obviously hasn't shown the coaches enough in practice to take the reins. Coaches aren't totally stupid. They will play whoever can help them keep their jobs. Bailey has only a couple of months in the program and it is unrealistic to think he is ready to go. Even though it's obvious that JG has reached the top of his capability, it is also obvious that the coaches don't think any of the other 3 are able to do better at the moment. At this point though, maybe it's time to ride with Bailey and let him learn on the job. He'll make mistakes but the experience would be valuable down the road. Don't think it makes much difference considering the Year of Covid. To me, it's a throw away season anyway.

Won't be any better until we figure out how to cover the middle of the field and get a pass rush. Opponents have exploited that all season and will continue to do so. The defense has been underwhelming at best.

Irrespective of that - if you are on the field 30 minutes a game instead of 40 - 45 minutes a game - you are going to give up 3/4 's as many points on average. It is a statistical certainty you will give up less points, and I haven't even brought better field position into the equation. It doesn't mean your defense is great, or suddenly covering the middle of the field. This isn't complicated.

Wrong. We do know. Clemson has proved it can be accomplished with a competent coaching staff.

If your Bama Gump head coach has them playing that way because of unwarranted favoritism towards a hack 5 year starting QB then it is on the Bama Gump coach not the other players.

Ben: Jarrett Guarantano will start against Arkansas and he’ll determine whether or not he finishes out the game. Brian Maurer would be the first quarterback to come in the game if need be. I think you’ll see an uptick in freshmen playing for sure because the Vols need an injection of energy. I mentioned several in my answer to the first question in this mailbag.

Huge mistake if true. Jg and BM are polar opposite qbs. So unless Cheney prepares two separate game plans........ idk.

Its just people getting excited because he's better than JG and has the best chance to play soon and is more ready than Bailey.

But if JP wanted to roll with Bailey right now I wouldn't argue with it. Aint no team ever needed a QB change like we do.

Ben: Because Tennessee is trying to finish out the season on a high note and the coaches believe that if it’s going to do so, it’s going to be because Jarrett Guarantano turns his season around. The other three quarterbacks simply aren’t ready to lead Tennessee to victory in the eyes of the coaches. UT may reach the point of playing young players for the sake of preparing for the future, but they haven’t reached that point just yet. The Vols have to find a way to finish the season with some victories and the coaches believe the best chance of doing so is with Guarantano at quarterback.

Oh God its painful.

While there is some truth to your post, Tennessee’s coaches do know the capabilities of the QB’s on the roster and don’t think for a minute that those coaches don’t want to win.
They are not convinced we have a good QB on the roster, unfortunately

I disagree with your comment. IF the UT coaches had any clue about quarterback play in at all, there's no way JG would even see the field here. Yet in year three they keep running him out there like he is a legitimate starter in the SEC and he is not. This coaching staff has done a tremendously poor job evaluating the QB position and the recruits they brought in which leads me to believe UT has hired the wrong head coach. Three years in and there has been no improvement in the most important position on the team. Bailey would give this team the best chance to succeed and I say that because we have seen god awful JG and even Maurer play and neither gives much hope.

What? That makes absolutely no sense at all. You’ve seen Bailey throw a grand total of 4 passes in the SEC. Out of those 4 there was ONE well placed ball, 2 incompletions and one that should’ve been picked and THATS all you need to see to anoint him “the best chance to succeed”?

To say Maurer doesn’t give much hope is to suggest he can’t get better when he was the flame that lit the candle to begin with as a true freshman. The entire team played more inspired. Not to mention he competed, and had success against the nations best. Has JG ever threw for 250+ vs UGA? Would you expect Bailey to throw for more? Has JG ever kept it close with Alabama or ANY of the big three for that matter?

Idk what a kid has to do for some of you to believe but you’re setting the bar pretty high for Bailey to be “better” than we’ve SEEN from Maurer.
