New QB being Installed During Offweek

At some point you start asking yourself, why should I bust my ass? This doofus is just going to give it away.

Because in some future play or game you may be the doofus and that same QB could bail your sorry ass just like you did his when he messed up. That's basic psychology of any team sport. And our defensive players are certainly not superstar world beaters anyhow, not even when compared to our QB's (as we have seen vs Bama where they were the weakest link in the team).

Damnit, Bobby.

Let HB learn and earn, but BM is ready NOW to outplay JG....by a mile.*

* actually, at least half of the starting QBs in Knoxville high school ball could outplay JG, if they had a few weeks to learn the playbook. I would bet my left nut on this...and win easily. He is hands down THE WORST QB to ever start 20 or more games at UT. His 9 wins and 18 losses are an embarrassment to him, the coaches, the team, all us Vol fans, and anyone else who knows what SEC football is supposed to be.

I want this thread to become filled with actual info about a QB change over the next couple weeks.

#StartMaurer

Then here it is...

I think the sun is (finally) about to set on JG’s time as the UT QB. One of two ways:

BM starts against Ark, and it’s him and Shrout down the stretch, regardless. Might see HB if we get a big lead, or maybe some quality time against Vandy;

JG starts against Ark, but is pulled if he struggles, or UT falls 7 behind. At which point see above. This option allows CJP to say he “had to make the change.”

I don’t think CJP or CJC want to risk HB in what is essentially a throwaway season. Try to get to a bowl; get those critical extra practice sessions; land another solid class; and set your sights on the 2021 season.

In any event, I think JG’s UT career ends with him on the bench.

Go Vols.

Again, our d was good enough to have a lead, at the half, vs UGA. Because the offense, though slowed, on the ground, did enough to keep it close. Although UGA handed us 7 pts.
Our d isn't world beaters, by any stretch. But, when it works together with an offense that possesses the football, and doesn't shoot itself in the foot, it can hold up against most. Add a few untimely turnovers, and we are in big trouble. As we saw against UK, and UGA, in the second half.

Defense just needs SOME help from the offense.

Everybody is overreacting at everything except QB. I watched that defense shut down a missouri offense that has turned out to be pretty good. Our defense did everything it possibly could to keep us in the game at UGA. Kentucky was doing nothing on offense until we spotted them 17 points. Defense ain't perfect, but its good enough to win games with us if our offense can do anything worth a darn.

I agree with most of this, except I don't think it's just QB that is our issue on offense. Other than Palmer who is more of a deep threat type of receiver, all other upper classmen receivers are useless. We desperately need someone like Jenning who JG could use like last year to help in those situations where everything else breaks down. Not having this type of physical receiver (who could also get you 5-10 yards as a wildcard running back when needed) magnifies all the issues with JG.

You realize our quarterback can’t read a defense or go through his progressions? I promise if you were to be at the game live and not watching on tv you would see receivers open about 90% of the time when Guarantano checks down to a covered running back. If they ever bench Guarantano the three things will happen automatically.
1. Chaney will all of the sudden look much better.
2. Our running game and offensive line will look much better.
3. Our receivers will look much better.
In my opinion when you play a quarterback who’s as bad as Guarantano you handicap everyone around him.

That is actual info.
To be clear, I agree that most of this is what should happen, but this is not actual info, like the post you were referencing was asking for.
But I still love you.

I too, would like to see actual info (if any actually exists) about if/when/who the QB change is.
I doubt it, but ....... anybody got any word?

They did bench Gurantano and Shrout promptly threw an interception (tried to force it to someone who was not open). Maurer also threw interceptions last year when he was in there. So I'm not buying into anyone else looking better - there is no evidence of that whatsoever based on what we have seen from Shrout or Maurer (and coaches know that which is why JG is still in there in spite of all his flows - still looks better by comparison). JG is also probably better directing and making adjustment to the running game calls (which at times looked good this year).

Okay, I'll admit it ... I'm an old out of touch codger ... so I googled "FOTW" and it came back Flags of the World.
Well, I know that ain't right, and you did use blue font ... so ... help an old man out here ... I can't keep up.
Thanks in advance.

Tennessee is stuck in the position were they have to try something anything to breath life back into the team.
If they all are not capable of making progress we are in the QB room what we were in the OL room under Dooley.
Meaning Tennessee is years and years away from making any kind of waves in the SEC meaningful ones anyway.

I don't think it's quite that bad. Just few weeks ago we were competitve at halftime with the top 3 team in the country. Sure, mistakes happened in the second half but that does not mean we are completely hopeless and need to throw everyone out and start over (even with JG we can be fine as long as he cleans up those mistakes). Let's see how the rest of the season plays out. Also, let's not forget that Pruitt has recruited some very good talent over last couple of years so let's be a little patient and see what that looks like once they take over as starters.

Not really. Our talent is about even with USC, Mizz, and UK. We won 2. JG put us in a huge hole against UK. A hole we arent dynamic enough to overcome. Bama was never going to be a game.

Not really Tenn has a lot more talent that Mizzou and UK. USC a bit more talent. The issue is that Tenn seams to do less with more physical talent. Development is not all that Great in Vol. Land.

For those digital warriors out there who don’t understand the actual schedule and challenges Tennessee has had please read

1. Due to COVID, NO backup QB has been developed due to MANDATED quarantine from contact tracing. Blame Trump, Blame Biden, Blame China, Blame whoever. You can’t train a backup in 4 practices.

2. Our QB issue is about AWARENESS and the offense. Our mistakes are due to bad decision making. A QB questioning himself.

3. Chaneys offense DEPENDS on a QB who can AUDIBLE and make MULTIPLE reads. Maybe a young gun can do this, however, you need PRACTICE to have a playbook deeper than your wristband.

I GUARANTEE QB change happening for Arkansas UNLESS COVID/HEALTH issues.

BOOK IT

Flame away

Trolling I suspect. Even so, Pruitt is married to JG. Not happening.

its time to get our 5 star q.b. ready for the future..i dont really care if we lose the rest of our games this year as long as hes ready for next year.
to be honest we are wasting time with the other 3 guys.we have holliday coming in as a backup for next year.time to move on and build our offense for the future.
anything less is a dis service to our team, fans and future recruits.thats just my opinion feel free to chime in your thoughts.

Yeah im aware of our other deficiencies, but they are amplified tenfold by JG.

Hoping to see Wideman out there and Dee Beckwith to help out.

Also, Brandon Johnson made some plays the first two games when JG was decent. He's totally fallen off. I think its more JG than BJ.

I agree that it is time to get HB ready. This bye week and next week before the Arky game should be used to simplify the playbook and get him up to speed on where to go with the ball pre-snap based on what the D is showing him.

This is not a throw away season, only if you continue to play jg. If Bailey is as good as advertised he needs to start against Ark. You use the rest of this season preparing for next year, and then whoever the backup is will be ready from game one next year. Continue to play Jg, and next year will be bad as well, because of no game experience.

Tell me how often teams throw 2 pick 6s and win. Our talent differential isnt great enough to overcome that.

Bailey isn’t ready yet. No Spring, No Fall. He started the season 6 months behind the normal curve.
