Most Underachieving Team in Tennessee History

It was a fun season and the guys worked hard, but I am exponentially more disappointed at this result than I've been with any prior Tennessee team - basketball or otherwise. I'm not really comfortable with the "but we weren't as talented" argument, because one way or another our teams always seem to find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. We absolutely had the right pieces to go deeper in the tournament, and we found a way to get bounced early.

Welcome to life as a Vols fan.

We will be hanging a Sweet 16 banner.

We ran into an on fire Auburn team in the SECCG (though we were not ready).

We ran into a guy that had a career night from Purdue who couldn't miss.

I'm not shedding any tears that the Vols underachieved this year.

Should’ve won the SEC regular season championship. But didn’t.

Should’ve won the SEC tournament. But didn’t.

Should’ve been a final four team. But isn’t.

Likable or not, and we can all agree that they are, when it comes to production this team has to be the most underachieving and disappointing team in Tennessee basketball history.

Change my mind.
You can take this Sugar, Honey, Ice and Tea somewhere else. No one guaranteed anything. These young men fought and scrapped all season ! You want to call a 30 win season, and Sweet 16 run disappointing ?! Then that's on you.

This all day long. Bunch of 3 stars who worked their butts off and became a great team, won 31 games and only one UT team has ever advanced further than they did. AT this time of year, you have to get a few breaks and calls to win close games. Vols put themselves in a big hole but fought back and put themselves in a spot to win the game and a series of questionable calls went against them. (No way that foul on LT gets called on Duke).

I enjoyed the season and I'm sure the players did as well. If you think anything less than a championship makes a season great or fun, you obviously never lettered in $#!+.

They overachieved last year. It was eerily similar to the 2015 football team. No one expected us to win a share much less contend for a league title, but we did. Once you overachieve and return literally ever starter and 3 bench guys, you have major expectations aka Final Four... That's the point of being ranked so high in preseason.

I equate this season to the 2016 football season. We stumbled when it mattered and it sucks. The good thing about the basketball program is we are set to make another run if Bone and Grant stay for another year while adding a 5 star. While we lose length and talent in Kyle/Admiral, we bring back even more experience and that helps down the stretch and in postseason. While I don't expect 30 or more wins next year, I do think we contend for a conference title, regular season and conference, and contend for a 4 seed or better.

Definitely a disappointing performance. They set the bar high to their credit, but definitely failed to clear it. It just is what it is.

That being said, best wishes to all the guys on this special team. They were a blast to watch.

Talent wise... should have been in the NIT.

This team overachieved... by A LOT.

Disappointed in the energy level & lack of focus in the first half. Had it not been for that, Tennessee would be in the Elite 8. With that said, a 31 win season & an appearance in the Sweet 16 is something to build on. As a life long Vol fan, I’m extremely proud of the team and how they represented the university throughout the year.

Amen. There is no need (or, probably, ability) to "change your mind." The point is ludicrous and insulting to an extremely fine team and an extremely fine coaching staff who worked their butts off for themselves, their school and their "fans." A silly, but attention getting, OP. That's all.

That's your opinion, we know what the prognosis is about opinions. Suck it up buttercup, the sun came out today.

Ranked #1 for 4 weeks. Always ranked in the top 8. Achievements well beyond any previous team.

Facts - whether they change your mind or not.

And first basketball team in our history to go wire to wire in the regular season ranked in the top 10. That to me is extremely impressive.

You are the only one that can change your mind. Just watched video of Vols in locker after the game for the 3rd time. Couldn’t be more proud of coach and players and how they have conducted themselves throughout the season. I will never use “underachievers” to describe this team. Go Vols

Had to help this man make this point again.

Man, what a whiny fan base we are,

Most certainly they did not under-achieve. The expectations just got out of hand with the top 5 ranking, beating #1 Gonzaga then the #1 ranking and 19 game win streak. That makes it seem like they under achieved when actually they were over ranked.

There were several Vol football teams that underachieved greatly, especially in the later Fulmer years when a man named David Cutcliffe wasn't around. This group of Tennessee basketballers raised out hope because of their overachieving. Thanks guys and God bless.
