Most Overrated Vol

When you say "Most Overrated Vol", there is only one name I think of, and many will scoff at the fact that I am about to call the patron saint of Tennessee football overrated, but I'm just going to say it anyways.

Peyton Manning.

Yep, I know I'll draw negative comments all over the place, but what the hell.

Remind me what our record is against Florida.

Remind me how many national championships we won while Peyton was here.

Remind me how many SEC championships we won. Yes, we won one, but if he's as good as everyone keeps saying he was, why didn't we win 2, or even to stretch, 3. With the talent we had on those mid-90's squad, we should've built a freaking dynasty in the SEC in '95 and '96. Now, nationally, yes, you've got that 1995 Nebraska team. Maybe we wouldn't have won a national title in 1995 and 1996. 1997 should have been the year that we won. All the pieces in place for a NC run. And, the sad thing is, we almost did it. In the Bowl Alliance NC game, however, we got crushed. Maybe we ran into a team better than us. In fact, we did. However, we should've at least been in the ball game.

I know most of you will call me an idiot, moron, retard, whatever. Some of you will point out my age. I know it'll come. Just know that I really don't care. That's my position, and there's not a soul on this planet that will get me to change.

There's some logic to saying that it might be Peyton Manning, but not for the reasons you listed. The reason to me that he might be the most overrated is simply the fact that he is more highly regarded than any other player in UT history, so there is more room than with any other player to overrate him. All that said however, Manning is unquestionably one of the top 2 or 3 Vols of all time, even if he did have his struggles against Florida.

i really wanted to say Peyton, but i didnt wanna get lynched for using blasphemy on vn.:)
more power to ya for callin him out. i still say Pat summit is a close second.

I believe rivals ranked him as the best high school player in the country.

Maybe best running back, but I don't think UT has ever signed the #1 player in the country. Even so, Lamarcus Coker was similarly rated and was less successful.

Peyton is highly regarded amongst Tennessee fans, arguably moreso than any other player, because of his actions on and off the field. His charisma and love for Tennessee football was contagious, and the recruitment of him (stealing him from Ole Miss) was epic.

I realize that, but I was kind of going off what kpt said earlier about Arian Foster needing to be highly regarded in order to be overrated. The more highly regarded a player is the easier it becomes to overrate them, and by that logic, Peyton would have to be near or at the top of the list.

I've always thought that Tennessee football was on the map pre-Peyton, or BP(Before Peyton).

Look man. I ain't gonna lie, maybe I have a little bias against Peyton, because I like Tee Martin a little better than Peyton. However, success is measured in championships. And Peyton just never got the job done all the ways. Now, maybe, some of it might have been Fulmer. But 1 SEC title in 4 years for a team that should have won 2 or 3 just isn't going to cut it with me.

You make valid points but that 1999 team, led by senior Tee Martin went 9-3 with more talent than Peyton.

I'm not so sure I can say that the 1999 team was a better team than the 1997 or 1996 teams. Maybe my childhood memories are a little fuzzy, but I seem to remember the 1997 team being absolutely beast in terms of talent.

Was Peerless Price on that 1999 team?

No.

Stallworth, Cedrick Wilson, Eric Parker and David Martin all that have had productive NFL careers.

They also had Lewis (back from injury so not 100%) Henry, Stephens (though he might of rs that year) and O. Smith.

Cosey Coleman, Chad Clifton, Spencer Riley, Fred Weary and Reggie Coleman on OL.

The D had several NFL guys too.

Peyton and Tee were both awesome, but to blame all of peyton's losses on him and all of tee's wins on him is rediculous. Peyton puts up 492 yards against florida in 96 and we lose. He puts up 296 yards against memphis and we lose. He (as a sophmore in the swamp) went 23-36 for 326 yards and 2 touchdowns, but we give up 62 points and lose. Tee had some VERY lucky breaks during the 98 season... (see clint stoerner, collins cooper).

Another thing: There is NO WAY that peyton manning was overrated nationally. He throws for record yards and touchdowns, and had more offensive plays in a single game than charles woodson had all year. If he is overrated by UT fans, it's because he was so underrated by heisman voters.

We get the ball back with around 90 seconds left. 45 yards to go. Tee Martin is under center. An undefeated season is on the line. We hand the ball of to Travis Henry five times in a row.

This discussion seems to be confusing due to the conflation of a "bust" and "over-rated". I think a "bust" is someone who was recruited to be an 'all-world' and then just turned into nothing (Brian Darden leads that list to me, Daniel Brooks, Dustin Moore), but "over-rated" seems to be someone who played a lot at Tennessee, got some praise or the coaches loved him, and all of us were wondering what the big deal bout this guy was?? There were some players that the coaches loved, but I just thought were lousy:
- Ryan Karl, Cedric Houston, Josh Briscoe, Tony Brown, Austin Rogers, Teddy Gaines, Lucas Taylor, Antwan Stewart

...I do think Munoz was nationally overrated, he got all these acolades and the media always spoke highly of him, but he just wasn't that good...

Clausen was a warrior, he looked ugly doing it, but the guy won and always "walked it off"

I like alot of what you say........But how in Gods name can you (or anyone say) Ryan Karl was OVER-RATED! He was a great running back at BGA (2000 yrds) and then moved to linebacker in college. Beefed up and did a great job for UT. Lived the UT/Orange dream...not highly recruited , but was a very important role in the defense. UT NEEDS more players like him to be great again. He was not over-rated....UNDER-RATED if you ask me. He was a football player. Got the job done due to hard work, determination, and loyality. He was Orange all the way.

The 98 team won the NC mostly because of defense and a whole lot of luck.

So in your estimation...UT has not had the talent to win a NC since 1951?? Correct?

They were lucky. FSU was lucky in 1994 (thanks Boston College). Lsu was lucky a few years ago. UF was lucky last year that Ole Miss came on at the end and made the Cotton Bowl. That is what happens....every team gets lucky to win a NC. It is not just pure talent, luck is involved.
