Most Overrated Vol

BJ Coleman in a landslide. "Waits for someone to mention Cutcliffe's supposed glowing endorsement of him"

absolutely the most ridiculous post of the day.

Agree 100%. The case could really be made that Clausen is one of the most UNDERrated Vols of all time. Sure he had his shortcomings (most notably he stuggled notoriously in bad weather, and we all cringed everytime he took off running with the ball.) But he also had his share of big moments. How many other UT QB's have gone 2-0 at the Swamp in their career? I personally think he just gets a bad rap because he had some big shoes to fill with UT coming of the NC in '98 and 4 years of Peyton before that. People need to accept the fact that there will probably NEVER be another Peyton Manning and just because a QB doesn't play at that level doesn't mean that he sucks.

I dont consider Brian Darden and jabari davis overrated they were flat out busts.
Players thought got too much attention for not doing squat are overrated.
I used to think E Ainge was till this last season. But I think I will go with G Riggs and C Clausen.

ainge played great the last 2 seasons he had with us here. i think he was overall a pretty good qb for us, he just had that blemish in '05 that tarnished his reputation a little bit.

That blemish wasn't all his fault. If Fulmer would have let him get in a rhythym instead of changing QB every down that year, i think it would have been a different season. Not Great, but i think we would have made a bowl game that year.

I totally agree. He played his ass off and gave it everything he had. He also looked like a TN walking horse when he ran, but he was an overachiever with his given skills.

Coleman and Rogers from the present squad.

I think for all the praise he got while he was here Kevin Burnett should have dominated more.

How can you say Casey Clausen is over rated? He was 12-2 on the road for his career. He also won 2 games in swamp, something that even Peyton never did.

Sure, he wasnt Peyton, but I for damn sure wish he was our quarterback now. I think jon crompton wins the over rated award. This kid was the #2 qb in the nation for gods sake.

I would give a team full of Gerald Riggs jr, Michael Munoz and Eric Locke for a Casey Clausen any day of the week.

Agreed. It seems the only QB post Manning not talked about is Tee, and that is only because we won the NC with him. Clausen was good, given his shortcomings, he made some great plays.

Exactly. Tee seems to get a bit of a free pass, most likely because of the NC. However, the other 2 QB's that were longtime starters since the Manning era (Clausen and Ainge) have significant portions of the fanbase who seem to think they were just awful. Obviously they weren't Peyton Manning, but I would say the majority of SEC teams during their times that would have happily traded their QB for Erik Ainge of Casey Clausen.

This discussion seems to be confusing due to the conflation of a "bust" and "over-rated". I think a "bust" is someone who was recruited to be an 'all-world' and then just turned into nothing (Brian Darden leads that list to me, Daniel Brooks, Dustin Moore), but "over-rated" seems to be someone who played a lot at Tennessee, got some praise or the coaches loved him, and all of us were wondering what the big deal bout this guy was?? There were some players that the coaches loved, but I just thought were lousy:
- Ryan Karl, Cedric Houston, Josh Briscoe, Tony Brown, Austin Rogers, Teddy Gaines, Lucas Taylor, Antwan Stewart

...I do think Munoz was nationally overrated, he got all these acolades and the media always spoke highly of him, but he just wasn't that good...

Clausen was a warrior, he looked ugly doing it, but the guy won and always "walked it off"

Current team: Denarius Moore and Ahmad Paige

I don't think Denarious Moore is a fair call. That guy should have been starting last year. He was the only one who made any big plays. But Fulmer kept him on the bench behind Austin Rogers and Josh Briscoe.......Fulmer never gave this guy a fair shake because he wanted his beloved Austin Rogers to play

Sounds like Nick Montana now.

I am going to catch hell for this but I am going to have to go with Arian Foster. I could not stand him butterhands when the game was on the line and I just didnt think he was all that great. Some of that might be contributed to the dismal O-line play but still.

Arian was a solid back for several years, but he did have a niche for fumbling at the worst possible times. Also, his lack of speed was obvious. Any other back on the team would likely have taken his 4th qtr. run in the 2007 SECCG to endzone for the go ahead score, but he ran out of steam and the entire LSU defense caught him at least 20 yards short of the endzone.

See 8 OT game vs. Arkansas. Clausen was tougher than many give him credit for. Playing with a busted shoulder and broken foot, all the while winning w/o complaint. Had he not made the infamous "I could have beat them with one hand behind my back" about UGA people wouldn't give him as much crap. That said, I think last year would have been much better with "The Iceman" under center.

The most overrated that comes to mind is Gerald Riggs Jr. He had a great junior year behind Cedric Houston. Going into his senior year he was getting Heisman talk (as a dark horse). He was terrible (530 yards, his back-up freshman Arian Foster had 800+ yards).
